METHODS: From multicenter stroke registry database, ischemic stroke patients who underwent transthoracic echocardiography were found. Among these, patients were classified if they had specific ventricular regional wall motion abnormalities discording with coronary artery distribution, such as apical (typical pattern) or nonapical ballooning (at
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Our goal was to investigate whether initial ischemic lesion pattern can predict stroke recurrence in patients with symptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis. METHODS: Of the Trial of Cilostazol in Symptomatic Intracranial Arterial Stenosis (TOSS)-2 trial participants, we included patients who underwent diffusion-weighted imaging and fluid attenuation inversion recovery imaging at baseline with a follow-up fluid attenuation inversion recovery imaging at 7 months. Based on
BACKGROUND: Nonrandomized observational studies have been conducted to evaluate the effects of statins on clinical outcomes in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage. Several studies on the effects of statin administration in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage have been published recently, but the findings are inconsistent. AIM: To evaluate the effects of statins administered prior to hospital admission and during hospitalization on mortality and functional outcomes in patients with intracer
Background and Purpose- We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the efficacy and safety of cilostazol as a mono or combination (plus aspirin or clopidogrel) treatments compared to conventional single antiplatelet therapy (SAPT, mainly aspirin) for secondary stroke prevention. Methods- Randomized controlled trial studies were searched across multiple comprehensive databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane) for review. The primary outcome was recurrent stroke comprising ischem
We aimed to develop a novel prediction model for early neurological deterioration (END) based on an interpretable machine learning (ML) algorithm for atrial fibrillation (AF)-related stroke and to evaluate the prediction accuracy and feature importance of ML models. Data from multicenter prospective stroke registries in South Korea were collected. After stepwise data preprocessing, we utilized logistic regression, support vector machine, extreme gradient boosting, light gradient boosting machine
BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether thrombolysis outcomes can be influenced by the affected vascular territory (i.e. anterior circulation stroke vs. posterior circulation stroke) in stroke patients owing to the lack of randomized controlled trials. AIMS: Using multiple comprehensive databases, we searched for observational studies of the safety and efficacy of intravenous thrombolytics and intra-arterial treatment with or without intravenous thrombolytics in accordance with the affected vascu
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Infarct volume and patterns may vary according to the stroke subtype. Within each stroke subtype, however, it is not clear if the infarct volume and patterns are affected by the risk of cardioembolism (CE) and the degree of arterial stenosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included consecutive patients with acute symptomatic ischemic lesions on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) performed within 48 h of symptom onset who had CE or internal carotid artery disease (ICAD). CE was
Metabolic syndrome is associated with the progression of early carotid atherosclerosis in the general population, suggesting that metabolic syndrome plays an important role in initiating the atherosclerotic process.
BACKGROUND: The exact pathophysiological mechanism of transient global amnesia (TGA) is unknown. It is debatable whether TGA is a risk factor for stroke. Therefore, here we investigated the possibility of TGA as a risk factor for stroke in a real-world setting using large-scale nationwide health claims data. METHODS: We used health claims data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). Patients diagnosed with TGA between 2007 and 2013 were selected. We initially extracted patients
Importance: Cardiovascular benefits of mild to moderate alcohol consumption need to be validated in the context of behavioral changes. The benefits of reduced alcohol consumption among people who drink heavily across different subtypes of cardiovascular disease (CVD) are unclear. Objective: To investigate the association between reduced alcohol consumption and risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in individuals who drink heavily across different CVD subtypes. Design, Setting, and
This study provides Class II evidence that prestroke use of antiplatelet agents reduces stroke severity in patients with first-ever acute ischemic stroke.
BACKGROUND: There is still debate over the utility of carotid intima-media thickness (C-IMT) or carotid plaque in predicting future cardiovascular events and death. Additionally, the importance of plasma homocysteine levels was raised as a predictor of cardiovascular events and death. METHODS: 1,391 subjects were recruited from the Ansan Geriatric cohort. We used B-mode carotid ultrasonography to assess C-IMT and plaque, measuring average maximal IMT and average mean IMT through 6-8 measurements
