15This study was conducted to evaluate whether immunomagnetic treatment could improve the retrieval and migration capacity of avian gonadal primordial germ cells (gPGCs) collected from gonads in 5.5-day-old chick and 5-day-old quail embryos, respectively. Collected gPGCs were loaded into a magnetic-activated cell sorter (MACS) after being conjugated with specific gPGC antibodies and either MACS-treated or non-treated cells in each species were subsequently transferred to the recipient embryos. MAC
Streptozotocin has been used to induce an experimental model for diabetes to study the activity of anti-diabetic agents. The cholesterol-lowering effect of chitosan makes a continued issue in the field of diabetes, but the hypoglyecemic effect is inconclusive to date. Unlike chitosan, the water soluble chitosan oligosaccharide may possess various biological properties for diabetes. The present study was designed to investigate the long-term effects of chitosan oligosaccharide in normal and strep
This study evaluated gonadal migration and postmigratory proliferation of intact and genetically modified chicken primordial germ cells (PGCs). A randomized, controlled trial was conducted with the gonadal population of PGCs and transgenic chicken production as major parameters. PGCs (0, 90, 900, 1800, or 3000 cells) were transferred into 53-h-old embryos. The percentage of PGCs migrating on Day 6 of development was highest (35.8%) following the transfer of 900 PGCs and did not change with incre
These results suggest that black soybean anthocyanins exert anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting ROS generation and subsequent MAPKs signaling, thereby inhibiting inflammatory responses.
Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a rare but fatal opportunistic infection and mainly occurs in patients with immunosuppressive conditions. Despite the increasing number of patients receiving immunosuppressive treatments, studies on PML are still lacking due to its low prevalence and incidence. We retrospectively reviewed patients diagnosed with PML in two tertiary hospitals in South Korea from 1999 to 2021. Total of 47 PML patients were included. Of 27 patients (57.4%) were di
Here, we examine peripheral blood memory T cell responses against the SARS-CoV-2 BA.4/BA.5 variant spike among vaccinated individuals with or without Omicron breakthrough infections. We provide evidence supporting a lack of original antigenic sin in CD8 + T cell responses targeting the spike. We show that BNT162b2-induced memory T cells respond to the BA.4/BA.5 spike. Among individuals with BA.1/BA.2 breakthrough infections, IFN-γ–producing CD8 + T cell responses against the BA.4/BA.5 spike incr
HSPs exert protective effects against cerulein-induced AP in rats by inhibiting autophagy.
We report a case of a man who developed duodenal bleeding caused by direct hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) invasion, which was successfully treated with endoscopic ethanol injection. A 57-year-old man with known HCC was admitted for melena and exertional dyspnea. He had been diagnosed with inoperable HCC a year ago. Urgent esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) showed two widely eroded mucosal lesions with irregularly shaped luminal protruding hard mass on the duodenal bulb. Argon plasma coagulation an
This study investigated the immunogenicity of, and reactogenicity to, the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine according to pre-existing adenovirus immunity. Individuals scheduled for COVID-19 vaccination were prospectively enrolled in a tertiary hospital with 2400 beds from March 2020 onwards. Pre-existing adenovirus immunity data was obtained before ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccination. A total of 68 adult patients administered two doses of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine were enrolled. Pre-existing adenovirus immunity
Appropriate postoperative antibiotic treatment in patients with infective endocarditis (IE) reduces the risks of recurrence and mortality. However, concerns about adverse drug reactions arise due to prolonged antibiotic usage. Therefore, we compared the recurrence and mortality rates according to the duration of postoperative antibiotic therapy in patients with IE. From 2005 to 2017, we retrospectively reviewed 416 patients with IE treated at a tertiary hospital in South Korea; among these, 216
INTRODUCTION: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a severe and fatal infection with high in-hospital and overall mortality rates of approximately up to 30%. Valve culture positivity was associated with in-hospital mortality and postoperative complications; however, few studies have analyzed the relationship between valve cultures and overall mortality over a long observation period. This study aimed to compare the association of valve culture positivity with overall mortality in patients with IE who
