15Increasing evidence supports the critical role for mitochondrial dysfunction in the development of sporadic PD, while the involvement of familial PD-related genes in the regulation of mitochondrial biology has been expanded by the discovery of new mitochondria-associated disease loci and the identification of their novel functions. Recent research has expanded knowledge on the mechanistic details underlying mitochondrial dysfunction in PD, with the discovery of new therapeutic targets providing
Human ATP13A2 (PARK9), a lysosomal type 5 P-type ATPase, has been associated with autosomal recessive early-onset Parkinson's disease (PD). ATP13A2 encodes a protein that is highly expressed in neurons and is predicted to function as a cation pump, although the substrate specificity remains unclear. Accumulation of zinc and mitochondrial dysfunction are established aetiological factors that contribute to PD; however, their underlying molecular mechanisms are largely unknown. Using patient-derive
Kufor-Rakeb syndrome (KRS) is a rare form of autosomal recessive juvenile or early-onset, levodopa responsive parkinsonism and has been associated with mutations in ATP13A2(also known as PARK9), a lysosomal type 5 P-type ATPase. Recently, we identified novel compound heterozygous mutations, c.3176T>G (p.L1059R) and c.3253delC (p.L1085WfsX1088) in ATP13A2 of two siblings affected with KRS. When overexpressed, wild-type ATP13A2 localized to Lysotracker-positive and LAMP2-positive lysosomes while b
Noncontrast thin-slice abdominal CT was the most accurate imaging method to determine the stone-free rate after PCNL. Noncontrast abdominal CT gives accurate information for selecting patients who may benefit from additional treatment and for planning follow-up.
The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between AS and subsequent depression. This study was conducted using a nationwide dataset available in Korean National Health Insurance System (KNHIS). We identified 11,465 newly diagnosed AS patients and 57,325 patients without AS in the ratio of 1:5 matched by sex, age, and index date, between 2010 and 2014. We investigated any latent characteristics in the patients' demographic information and chronic comorbidities that could trigger a de
The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence and incidence of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) in South Korea, 2010-2015. This study was conducted using the Health Insurance Review Agency (HIRA) database, which includes information on every patient diagnosed with AS. The incidence and prevalence of AS were evaluated by age, sex, and income status. The prevalence increased linearly by 7.7% annually, i.e., 31.62 in 2010 to 52.30 in 2015 (per 100,000 persons). During the study period, the incide
Oxidative stress caused by free radicals has been implicated in the pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Edaravone (also known as MCI-186), a free radical scavenger, was approved as an ALS treatment in 2015 in Japan. However, the therapeutic effects of edaravone on patients with ALS outside of Japan are not yet reported. This study aims to investigate effects of edaravone on ALS patients in the Korean population. The study included 22 patients with ALS who were treated with edara
We examined whether apigenin affects the gene expression, secretion and activity of matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) in primary cultured rabbit articular chondrocytes, as well as in vivo production of MMP-3 in the knee joint of rat to evaluate the potential chondroprotective effects of apigenin. Rabbit articular chondrocytes were cultured in a monolayer, and reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to measure interleukin-1β (IL-1β)-induced expression of MMP-3, MMP-1,
The Korean version of the USSQ is a reliable and valid instrument that can be self-administered by Korean patients with a ureteral stent in the clinical and research settings. Further clinical studies in the Korean settings would be useful to provide robust data on sensitivity to change.
