Fluctuations in motor symptoms are mostly observed in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. This characteristic is inevitable, and can affect the quality of life of the patients. However, it is difficult to collect precise data on the fluctuation characteristics using self-reported data from PD patients. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a suitable technology that can detect the medication state, also termed the "On"/"Off" state, automatically using wearable devices; at the same time, this coul

Abstract The roles of autophagy-related proteins as diagnostic or monitoring biomarkers in Parkinson’s disease (PD) have not been clearly elucidated. We recruited 32 patients with early-stage PD and 28 control subjects, and evaluated parkinsonian motor symptoms and dopamine transporter imaging data. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of LC3B, Beclin1, and LAMP-2 were estimated using ELISAs, and CSF levels of ATG5, ATG7, and p62 were examined by immunoblotting. Additionally, we also assessed the le

Differentiation of multiple system atrophy with predominant parkinsonism (MSA-P) and Parkinson's disease (PD) is important, but an effective tool for differentiation has not been identified. We investigated the efficacy of the composite autonomic symptom scale 31 (COMPASS 31) questionnaire as a tool for evaluating autonomic function in parkinsonism patients. In this study, we enrolled drug-naïve patients with MSA-P and PD, and administered the COMPASS-31 and an objective autonomic dysfunction te

Falls are a common and disabling symptom in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). For prevention, it is important to understand the pathophysiology of falls in PD patients, but the predictors for the possible mechanisms underlying such falls have not been clearly elucidated. In this prospective observational study, we investigated the implications of falling direction to predict the mechanisms of recurrent falls in PD patients. We enrolled 62 recurrent fallers with PD and divided them into two

BACKGROUND: Freezing of gait is a common and disabling symptom of parkinsonism. However, the corresponding anatomic structures have yet to be clearly elucidated. METHODS: We performed diffusion tensor imaging on 40 subjects with white matter changes. We compared apparent diffusion coefficient values and fraction anisotropy values of 7 candidate anatomic structures between 14 patients with freezing of gait (freezing of gait group) and 26 without freezing of gait (control group). RESULTS: Fraction

SJR Q1FWCI 0.7Neuroepidemiology

BACKGROUND: Considering the increasing prevalence of Parkinson's disease (PD), the lack of awareness and knowledge regarding PD may be barriers to the early diagnosis and the provision of optimal care to affected patients. This study aimed to investigate the awareness and knowledge about PD among the general population in South Korea and to identify the factors that are associated with these parameters. METHODS: We developed a structured, 22-item questionnaire that consisted of both open-ended a

SJR Q3FWCI 0.4European Neurology

BACKGROUND: Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is a common disorder and has a significant impact on the quality of life. Microvascular decompression (MVD) is an effective and safe treatment option for patients with HFS, however the effectiveness and safety of MVD in elderly patients with HFS is not clear. METHODS: We enrolled 699 HFS patients who underwent MVD from February 2008 to December 2011 at the Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, Korea. Subjects were divided into two groups: an elderly group (patients

Increasing evidence suggests an association between SARS-CoV-2 vaccines and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). Nevertheless, little is understood about the contributing risk factors and clinical characteristics of GBS post SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. In this prospective surveillance study of 38,828,691 SARS-CoV-2 vaccine doses administered from February 2021 to March 2022 in the Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, 55 cases of GBS were reported post vaccination. We estimated the incidence rate of GBS per mil
