15Abstract Over the past decade, much progress has been made in the application of multifunctional membranes with special wettability for the separation of oil–water mixtures. This progress has been driven by frequent oil spill accidents and oily wastewater, which are enormous threats to the vulnerable aquatic environment. The design of permeable superwettable membranes for oil–water separation has been inspired by the development of highly wetting/nonwetting interfaces, but these membranes are su
The ability to control the timing and order of release of different therapeutic drugs will play a pivotal role in improving patient care and simplifying treatment regimes in the clinic. The controlled sequential release of a broad range of small and macromolecules from thin film coatings offers a simple way to provide complex localized dosing in vivo. Here we show that it is possible to take advantage of the structure of certain nanomaterials to control release regimes from a scale of hours to m
We introduce a novel and versatile approach for preparing hollow multilayer capsules of graphene oxide nanosheets. Positively charged reduced graphene oxide (rGO-NH 3 + ) and negatively charged reduced graphene oxide (rGO-COO − ) were used as building blocks for the layer-by-layer assembly of graphene multilayer films onto polystyrene (PS) colloids. After removing the PS colloids with THF treatment, hollow graphene capsules with necessary physical and chemical stabilities were prepared successfu
Research on cultured meat has primarily focused on the mass proliferation or differentiation of muscle cells; thus, the food characteristics of cultured meat remain relatively underexplored. As the quality of meat is determined by its organoleptic properties, cultured meat with similar sensory characteristics to animal-derived meat is highly desirable. In this study, we control the organoleptic and nutritional properties of cultured meat by tailoring the 2D differentiation of primary bovine myob
Biocompatible polymers have been extensively applied to molecular assembly techniques on a micro- and nanoscale to miniaturize functional devices for biomedical uses. However, cytotoxic assessments of developed devices are prone to partially focus on non-specific cells or cells associated with the specific applications. Thereby, since toxicity is dependent on the type of cells and protocols, we do not fully understand the relative toxicities of polymers. Additionally, we need to ensure the blood
A superhydrophobic carbon nanofiber network inlay-gated mesh with high durability and separation performance was developed for oil–water emulsion separation.
Plastic is produced, used, and accumulated exponentially. Humans can take it through the food chain, and microplastics can be potentially toxic to humans. In this study, we analyzed the surface patterns of microplastics and their effects on humans using polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). The surface analysis of these microplastics will be used as a standardized measurement method for microplastic detection and will be used as an indicator of the impact of environ
Over the past years, the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly has been widely developed as one of the most powerful techniques to prepare multifunctional films with desired functions, structures and morphologies because of its versatility in the process steps in both material and substrate choices. Among various functional nanoscale objects, carbon-based nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene sheets, are promising candidates for emerging science and technology with their unique physical,
Layer by layer (lbl) assembled multilayer thin films are used in drug delivery systems with attractive advantages such as unlimited selection of building blocks and free modification of the film structure. In this paper, we report the fundamental properties of lbl films constructed from different substances such as PS-b-PAA amphiphilic block copolymer micelles (BCM) as nano-sized drug vehicles, 2D-shaped graphene oxide (GO), and branched polyethylenimine (bPEI). These films were fabricated by su
Abstract Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) can convert a mechanical energy input to an electric energy output through Maxwell's displacement current. By increasing the electrical output and overcoming the mechanical limitations of TENGs, such devices can be used as an auxiliary power source for portable electronics. Nevertheless, the generation mechanism and structure must be optimized to compensate for the electrical and mechanical limitations of TENGs. This paper reports on a nonpolar liqui
