15Because of frequent involvement of the cerebellum and brainstem, ocular motor abnormalities are key features of spinocerebellar ataxias and may aid in differential diagnosis. Our objective for this study was to distinguish the subtypes by ophthalmologic features after head-shaking and positional maneuvers, which are not yet recognized as differential diagnostic tools in most common forms of spinocerebellar ataxias. Of the 302 patients with a diagnosis of cerebellar ataxia in 3 Korean University
BACKGROUND: The clinical manifestations of drug-induced parkinsonism (DIP) and Parkinson disease (PD) are nearly indistinguishable, making it difficult to differentiate DIP from PD, especially in the early stages. We compared non-motor symptoms between patients with DIP and those with drug-naïve PD in the early stages using the Non Motor Symptoms Scale (NMSS). METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 28 patients with DIP, 35 patients with drug-naïve PD, and 32 controls with no history of neurological
We compared caregiver burden in Parkinson disease with dementia (PDD) to that in Alzheimer disease (AD) and examined the factors contributing to the burden in PDD. Totally, 42 patients with PDD and 109 patients with AD and their caregivers participated in this study. The caregiver burden was measured using the Burden Interview (BI). Scores of Barthel activities of daily living (BADLs), Mini-Mental State Examination, Clinical Dementia Rating of patients, and score of Center for Epidemiologic Stud
BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a common symptom and an important prognostic factor in Parkinson's disease (PD). Although cognitive and motor dysfunctions may contribute to dysphagia in patients with PD, any specific association between such problems and swallowing functions is unclear. Here, we examined the potential relationship between cognitive/motor components and swallowing functions in PD. We evaluated the contributions of cognition and motor function to the components of swallowing via video fl
Clinically differentiating multiple system atrophy cerebellar (MSA-C) phenotype and spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) is challenging especially in the early stage. We assessed diagnostic value of brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in differentiating MSA-C and SCAs based at different disease stages (<3, 3-7, and >7 years of disease duration). Overall, 186 patients with probable MSA-C and 117 with genetically confirmed SCAs were included. Hot cross bun (HCB) signs and middle cerebellar peduncle (
Falls are a common and disabling symptom in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). For prevention, it is important to understand the pathophysiology of falls in PD patients, but the predictors for the possible mechanisms underlying such falls have not been clearly elucidated. In this prospective observational study, we investigated the implications of falling direction to predict the mechanisms of recurrent falls in PD patients. We enrolled 62 recurrent fallers with PD and divided them into two
Objectives: We aimed to validate the accuracy of blood pressure (BP) measurement using a smartwatch in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Materials and Methods: We compared 168 pairs of BP ( n = 56) measurements acquired by a smartwatch (SM-R850) with those measured by a sphygmomanometer (reference device). Results: Differences between the smartwatch BP and reference BP measurements were compared. The mean and standard deviation of the differences systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP), m
