BACKGROUND: For more than three decades, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) has provided a framework to quantify health loss due to diseases, injuries, and associated risk factors. This paper presents GBD 2023 findings on disease and injury burden and risk-attributable health loss, offering a global audit of the state of world health to inform public health priorities. This work captures the evolving landscape of health metrics across age groups, sexes, and loc

BACKGROUND: Timely and comprehensive analyses of causes of death stratified by age, sex, and location are essential for shaping effective health policies aimed at reducing global mortality. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023 provides cause-specific mortality estimates measured in counts, rates, and years of life lost (YLLs). GBD 2023 aimed to enhance our understanding of the relationship between age and cause of death by quantifying the probability of dyin

Various behavioral and physiological pathways follow a pre-determined, 24 hour cycle known as the circadian rhythm. Metabolic homeostasis is regulated by the circadian rhythm. Time-restricted eating (TRE) is a type of intermittent fasting based on the circadian rhythm. In this study, we aim to analyze systemically the effects of TRE on body weight, body composition, and other metabolic parameters. We reviewed articles from PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library to identify clinical trials that

Considering the significant burden of post-acute COVID-19 conditions among patients infected with SARS-CoV-2, we aimed to identify the risk of acute respiratory complications or post-acute respiratory sequelae. A binational population-based cohort study was conducted to analyze the risk of acute respiratory complications or post-acute respiratory sequelae after SARS-CoV-2 infection. We used a Korean nationwide claim-based cohort (K-COV-N; n = 2,312,748; main cohort) and a Japanese claim-based co

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential association between prenatal opioid exposure and the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders in children. DESIGN: Nationwide birth cohort study. SETTING: From 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2020, birth cohort data of pregnant women in South Korea linked to their liveborn infants from the National Health Insurance Service of South Korea were collected. PARTICIPANTS: All 3 251 594 infants (paired mothers, n=2 369 322; age 32.1 years (standard deviation 4.2)) in So

The Role of Vitamin D in Alzheimer’s Disease: A Transcriptional Regulator of Amyloidopathy and Gliopathy

SJR Q1BiomedicinesOA

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by amyloid-beta (Aβ) accumulation and cognitive mental decline. Epidemiological studies have suggested an association between low serum vitamin D levels and an increased risk of AD. Vitamin D regulates gene expression via the vitamin D receptor, a nuclear ligand-dependent transcription factor. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the pathogenic and therapeutic effects of vitamin D on AD is not fully understood yet. To better understand how vitamin

High-fat diet-induced dopaminergic dysregulation induces REM sleep fragmentation and ADHD-like behaviors
Jiseung Kang, M.K. Park, Chang‐Myung Oh, Tae Kim
SJR Q1Psychiatry ResearchOA

Consumption of a high-fat diet (HFD) has been associated with reduced wakefulness and various behavioral deficits, including anxiety, depression, and anhedonia. The dopaminergic system, which plays a crucial role in sleep and ADHD, is known to be vulnerable to chronic HFD. However, the association between HFD-induced behavioral and molecular changes remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated the effects of a HFD on the dopaminergic system and its association with behavioral deficits in male mic

Impaired gut transit may contribute to AD pathogenesis via the gut-brain axis, thus suggesting a cyclical relationship between intestinal barrier disruption and Aβ accumulation in the brain. We propose that gut transit or motility may be a modifiable lifestyle factor in the prevention of AD, and further clinical investigations are warranted.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have variably reported inconclusive trends in the prevalence of atopic dermatitis (AD) among adults, and there are limited data on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to investigate the national trends and age-stratified prevalence of AD among adults from 2007 to 2021 in South Korea, focusing mainly on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic-related factors. METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted using the Korea National Health and Nutritio
