Distributed socialite
Jiwon Seo, Jongsoo Park, Jaeho Shin, Monica S. Lam
SJR Q1Proceedings of the VLDB Endowment

Large-scale graph analysis is becoming important with the rise of world-wide social network services. Recently in SociaLite, we proposed extensions to Datalog to efficiently and succinctly implement graph analysis programs on sequential machines. This paper describes novel extensions and optimizations of SociaLite for parallel and distributed executions to support large-scale graph analysis. With distributed SociaLite, programmers simply annotate how data are to be distributed, then the necessar

Availability Impact on GPS Aviation due to Strong Ionospheric Scintillation
Jiwon Seo, Todd Walter, Per Enge
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems

Strong ionospheric scintillation due to electron density irregularities inside the ionosphere is commonly observed in the equatorial region during solar maxima. Strong amplitude scintillation causes deep and frequent Global Positioning System (GPS) signal fading. Since GPS receivers lose carrier tracking lock at deep signal fading and the lost channel cannot be used for the position solution until reacquired, ionospheric scintillation is a major concern for GPS aviation in the equatorial area. Characteristics of deep GPS signal fading due to ionospheric scintillation for aviation receiver design

SJR Q2Radio Science

Deep and frequent fading of Global Positioning System (GPS) signals caused by ionospheric scintillation is a major concern for aircraft navigation using GPS in the equatorial region during solar maximum. Aviation receivers use both code and carrier measurements to calculate position solutions. Deep signal fading can break a receiver's carrier tracking lock to a satellite channel. The lost channel cannot be used for position calculation until the receiver reacquires the channel and reestablishes

Low-Cost Curb Detection and Localization System Using Multiple Ultrasonic Sensors
Joon Hyo Rhee, Jiwon Seo
SJR Q1SensorsOA

Curb detection and localization systems constitute an important aspect of environmental recognition systems of autonomous driving vehicles. This is because detecting curbs can provide information about the boundary of a road, which can be used as a safety system to prevent unexpected intrusions into pedestrian walkways. Moreover, curb detection and localization systems enable the autonomous vehicle to recognize the surrounding environment and the lane in which the vehicle is driving. Most existi

Future Dual-Frequency GPS Navigation System for Intelligent Air Transportation Under Strong Ionospheric Scintillation
Jiwon Seo, Todd Walter
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems

GPS technology is essential for future intelligent air transportation systems such as the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) of the United States. However, observed deep and frequent amplitude fading of GPS signals due to ionospheric scintillation can be a major concern in expanding GPS-guided aviation to the equatorial area where strong scintillation is expected. Current civil GPS airborne avionics track signals at a single frequency (L1 frequency) alone because it was the only

A Real-Time Capable Software-Defined Receiver Using GPU for Adaptive Anti-Jam GPS Sensors
Jiwon Seo, Yu-Hsuan Chen, David S. De Lorenzo, Sherman Lo, Per Enge, Dennis Akos, Jiyun Lee
SJR Q1SensorsOA

Due to their weak received signal power, Global Positioning System (GPS) signals are vulnerable to radio frequency interference. Adaptive beam and null steering of the gain pattern of a GPS antenna array can significantly increase the resistance of GPS sensors to signal interference and jamming. Since adaptive array processing requires intensive computational power, beamsteering GPS receivers were usually implemented using hardware such as field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). However, a softw

Design and Implementation of Real-Time Software Radio for Anti-Interference GPS/WAAS Sensors

SJR Q1SensorsOA

Adaptive antenna array processing is widely known to provide significant anti-interference capabilities within a Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receiver. A main challenge in the quest for such receiver architecture has always been the computational/processing requirements. Even more demanding would be to try and incorporate the flexibility of the Software-Defined Radio (SDR) design philosophy in such an implementation. This paper documents a feasible approach to a real-time SDR imple

SFOL Pulse: A High Accuracy DME Pulse for Alternative Aircraft Position and Navigation
Euiho Kim, Jiwon Seo
SJR Q1SensorsOA

In the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) performance based navigation strategy announced in 2016, the FAA stated that it would retain and expand the Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) infrastructure to ensure resilient aircraft navigation capability during the event of a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) outage. However, the main drawback of the DME as a GNSS back up system is that it requires a significant expansion of the current DME ground infrastructure due to its poor distance

Towards Contactless Silent Speech Recognition Based on Detection of Active and Visible Articulators Using IR-UWB Radar
Young Goo Shin, Jiwon Seo
SJR Q1SensorsOA

People with hearing or speaking disabilities are deprived of the benefits of conventional speech recognition technology because it is based on acoustic signals. Recent research has focused on silent speech recognition systems that are based on the motions of a speaker's vocal tract and articulators. Because most silent speech recognition systems use contact sensors that are very inconvenient to users or optical systems that are susceptible to environmental interference, a contactless and robust

Design Optimization of a Crude Oil Distillation Process
Jiwon Seo, Min-Hye Oh, T. H. Lee
SJR Q2Chemical Engineering & Technology

In this work, the optimal design of a crude oil distillation unit was made. Since the method used here is based on the general optimization framework, it is possible to design the process systematically. The results of this study gave better performances than that of the existing process. The process in this study is currently in operation and has the capacity of 150,000 BPSD. Feed locations, heat duties of pumparounds and operating conditions of the preheat train are selected as variables, and

Role of Oxygen Vacancy Sites on the Temperature-Dependent Photoluminescence of SnO2 Nanowires
Euiyoung Choi, Dongwook Lee, Hyun‐Joon Shin, Namdong Kim, L. De Los Santos Valladares, Jiwon Seo
SJR Q1The Journal of Physical Chemistry C

The role of oxygen vacancies in temperature-dependent photoluminescence of SnO2 nanowires was investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Two types of oxygen vacancies are present in the nanowires: at out-of-plane sites and at in-plane sites; both play crucial roles in the temperature dependence of the photoluminescence. Oxygen vacancies at in-plane sites participate in photon emission at low temperature, whereas those at out-of-plane sites result in photoluminescence at room temperature. Acc
