The triglyceride glucose (TyG) index, a product of triglyceride and fasting glucose, is a reliable marker for insulin resistance. We aimed to investigate the association between the TyG-related markers and coronary artery calcification (CAC) progression. We enrolled 1145 asymptomatic participants who underwent repeated CAC score measurements during routine health examinations. Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), TyG index, TyG-BMI (body mass index), and TyG-WC (waist ci

The role of adipocytes in cancer microenvironment has gained focus during the recent years. However, the characteristics of the cancer-associated adipocytes (CAA) in human breast cancer tissues and the underlying regulatory mechanism are not clearly understood. We reviewed pathology specimens of breast cancer patients to understand the morphologic characteristics of CAA, and profiled the mRNA and miRNA expression of CAA by using indirect co-culture system in vitro. The CAAs in human breast cance

BACKGROUND: Although computed tomography (CT) is considered the gold standard for investigating skeletal muscles, diagnostic cutoff points for sarcopenia have not been established. We therefore suggested clinically relevant diagnostic cutoff points for sarcopenia based on reference values of skeletal muscle area (SMA) measured by CT scan in a large-sized healthy Asian population. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis included 11,845 subjects (7,314 men, 4,531 women) who underwent abdominal CT s

Abstract As sarcopenia research has been gaining emphasis, the need for quantification of abdominal muscle on computed tomography (CT) is increasing. Thus, a fully automated system to select L3 slice and segment muscle in an end-to-end manner is demanded. We aimed to develop a deep learning model (DLM) to select the L3 slice with consideration of anatomic variations and to segment cross-sectional areas (CSAs) of abdominal muscle and fat. Our DLM, named L3SEG-net, was composed of a YOLOv3-based a

CONTEXT: Metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) is a dynamic condition. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among people with MHO according to its longitudinal change. DESIGN: Observational study. SETTING: A nationwide population-based cohort. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 514 866 people from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort. INTERVENTION: The initial presence and changes of obesity (using body mass index [BMI] and waist circumference [WC])

The aim of this study was to investigate the association of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with diabetes and the impact of waist circumference (WC) changes in subjects with prediabetes. We enrolled 6240 subjects with prediabetes who underwent health check-ups in 2007 and revisited our hospital at least once for a follow-up examination between 2008 and 2013. Subjects were stratified by WC changes into three groups. The relative risks (RRs) for diabetes according to the NAFLD status and

Advanced liver fibrosis and coronary artery calcification (CAC) progression has been reported to correlate with cardiovascular disease. This study investigated the association between noninvasive liver fibrosis score and CAC progression in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We included 1173 asymptomatic adults with CAC scores from 2007-2013. CAC progression was defined as newly incident CAC or a ≥ 2.5-unit increase in the final CAC score square root. Liver fibrosis was asses

Background: Uric acid is one of natural antioxidants in human body. There have been several studies on the correlation between uric acid with oxidative stress and osteoporosis. However, the data are insufficient and results are controversial. In this regard, we determined the association between uric acid levels and bone mineral density (BMD) during the postmenopausal period. Methods: We analyzed data from 328 postmenopausal women (mean age, 57.3 ± 6.5 years; mean serum uric acid level, 4.6 ± 1.

BACKGROUND: Based on reported results of three large cardiovascular outcome trials (CVOTs) of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), we aimed to investigate the overall effect of GLP-1 RAs on major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) and to identify subpopulations exhibiting the greatest cardiovascular (CV) benefit. METHODS: Three CVOTs reporting effects of long-acting GLP-1 RAs were included: LEADER (liraglutide), SUSTAIN-6 (semaglutide), and EXSCEL (exenatide once weekly). In

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of ENS on cognitive impairment induced by scopolamine and its potential neuroprotective effect against glutamate-induced cytotoxicity in HT22 cell and to investigate the underlying mechanisms. ENS (3, 10, 30, and 100 mg/kg), scopolamine (1 mg/kg), and donepezil (1 mg/kg) were administered to mice during a test period. Scopolamine impaired memory and learning in a water maze test and a passive avoidance test. The neuroprotective effect of EN

It is unclear whether non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. We examined the independent impact of NAFLD on the progression of the coronary artery calcification (CAC) score, a well-known marker of atherosclerosis progression. We examined 1,173 asymptomatic participants who underwent repeated CAC score measurement during routine health examinations. The subjects were categorised into four groups based on the presence (+) or absence (-)

INTRODUCTION: Ezetimibe/statin combination therapy has been reported to provide additional cardioprotective effects compared to statin monotherapy. The apolipoprotein B/A1 (apoB/A1) ratio is an effective predictor of cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of rosuvastatin/ezetimibe combination therapy versus rosuvastatin monotherapy using the apoB/A1 ratio in patients with diabetes and hypercholesterolemia. METHODS: In this randomized, multicenter, o
