15Each vertebrate species displays specific tooth patterns in each quadrant of the jaw: the mouse has one incisor and three molars, which develop at precise locations and at different times. The reason why multiple teeth form in the jaw of vertebrates and the way in which they develop separately from each other have been extensively studied, but the genetic mechanism governing the spatial patterning of teeth still remains to be elucidated. Sonic hedgehog (Shh) is one of the key signaling molecules
Conditional loss of TGF-beta signaling selectively in the pancreas led to a failure in fibrogenic responses of repeated injections of cerulein, signifying that the modulation of TGF-beta signaling could be the therapeutic target for the prevention of chronic fibrosing pancreatitis.
The effect of lamivudine administration on the evolution of precore/core promoter mutation is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the changes of precore/core promoter sequences in chronic type B hepatitis patients treated with lamivudine. Serial sera were obtained from 11 patients before, at the beginning of, and during therapy. Serum samples were polymerase chain reaction-amplified, and nucleotide sequences of hepatitis B virus (HBV) were analyzed. At baseline, precore and core prom
PURPOSE: To compare the radiographic and clinical results of medial open wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) using autogenous bone graft and allogenous cancellous bone graft for medial compartment osteoarthritis of the knee with two-year follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-one patients (52 knees) who underwent medial OWHTO from October 2007 to April. 2010 were included in the study. The patients were divided into group I (n=29) that received an autogenous tricortical bone graft and group II
BACKGROUND: We previously found the down-expression of SM22 in an experimental animal model of colorectal cancer by performing a proteomic analysis. In this study, we addressed the expression and molecular mechanisms of SM22 in human colorectal cancer. METHODS: To evaluate the expression of SM22 in colon cancers, Western blot and immunohistochemistry were performed in 13 normal, 14 adenomas, and 44 adenocarcinomas. To address the role of SM22 in colon carcinogenesis, SM22 was restored in the col
Sonic hedgehog ( Shh) is important in pattern formation during development. Shh transcription is modulated by a long-range regulatory mechanism containing a number of enhancers, which are spread over nearly 850 kb in the mouse genome. Shh enhancers in the nervous system have been found between intron and 430 kb upstream of Shh. Enhancers in the oral cavity, pharynx, lung, gut, and limbs have been discovered between 610 kb and 850 kb upstream of Shh. However, the intergenic region ranging from 43
Crown shapes in mammalian teeth vary considerably from species to species, and morphological characters in crown shape have been used to identify species. Cusp pattern is one of the characters in crown shape. In the processes governing the formation of cusp pattern, the Shh pathway has been implicated as an important player. Suppression of Shh signaling activity in vitro in explant assays appears to induce supernumerary cusp formation in wild-type tooth germs. However, the in vivo role of Shh si
OBJECTIVES: Ameloblastomas are the most common odontogenic epithelial tumors with high recurrence rate. The aim of this study was to identify apoptosis-related genes with recurrence of ameloblastomas and to evaluate its feasibility as a prognostic marker and as a target molecule preventing from recurrence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Public microarray data were analyzed. To evaluate their expression in ameloblastoma patients, immunohistochemical staining was performed in 89 human ameloblastoma tissue
Mammalian teeth have diverse pattern of the crown and root. The patterning mechanism of the root position and number is relatively unknown compared to that of the crown. The root number does not always match to the cusp number, which has prevented the complete understanding of root patterning. In the present study, to elucidate the mechanism of root pattern formation, we examined (1) the pattern of cervical tongues, which are tongue-like epithelial processes extending from cervical loops, (2) fa
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the histologic and volumetric changes of gingival tissues following grafting with collagen-based matrices at labial aspect of teeth in canines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Gingival augmentation was performed in the mandibular incisor area using two types of xenogeneic cross-linked collagen matrices (CCMs), bovine CCM for BCCM group and porcine CCM for PCCM group, whereas the contralateral sides remained untreated (B-control group and P-control group). Descriptive histology, hi
Tc-99m HMPAO labeled WBC SPECT was performed in 5 patients with eosinophilic gastroenteritis before and after successful medical therapy. The imaging findings were graded according to the following imaging scheme; grade 0, no uptake; grade 1, uptake < bone marrow; grade 2, uptake < liver; grade 3, uptake > liver. In no patient was the diagnosis made radiologically or with colonoscopy. The sites of involvement were identified with Tc-99m HMPAO WBC imaging in all patients before treatment and the
The tooth is one of the ectodermal organs controlled by reciprocal interactions between the epithelium and the mesenchyme. Mesenchymal cells in the developing tooth, so-called dental mesenchymal cells, are derived from two different origins: the cranial neural crest (CNC) and the non-CNC. These CNC-derived cells migrate, proliferate and differentiate into odontoblasts, cementoblasts, fibroblasts, osteoblasts and chondroblasts. Tooth germs of wild-type mice were transplanted into the kidney of ad
Biomarkers for the detection of early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are urgently needed. To identify biomarkers of HCC, we performed a comparative proteomics analysis, based on 2-DE of HCC tissues and surrounding non-tumor tissues. Six xenobiotic enzymes were significantly down-regulated in the HCC tissue. Among these, phenol sulfotransferase (SULT1A1) was confirmed by Western blot analysis in 105 HCC patients. SULT1A1 showed a significant decrease in 98.1% of the HCC tissues, with 88.6% sensit
