15The effect of modest alcohol consumption on fibrosis progression in the general population with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unclear. We examined the association of nonheavy alcohol consumption with worsening of noninvasive fibrosis indices in a large-scale, low-risk population with NAFLD. A cohort study was performed in 58,927 Korean adults with NAFLD and low fibrosis scores who were followed for a median of 4.9 years. Non-, light, and moderate drinkers were defined as 0 g/d
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance are associated with a higher risk of colon cancer. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is regarded as a manifestation of metabolic syndrome in the liver. This investigation was initiated to determine whether NAFLD has a relationship to colorectal adenomatous polyps. METHODS: We examined the 2917 participants who underwent a routine colonoscopy at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital in 2007. We divided the 2917 subjects into the adenomatou
NAFLD had an association with HbA1c level and insulin resistance in nondiabetic individuals, and these associations were independent of obesity and other metabolic components.
OBJECTIVES: We compared liver-related mortality by fibrosis severity between 2 types of fatty liver disease (FLD), nonalcoholic FLD (NAFLD) and alcoholic FLD (AFLD), in a large cohort of nonobese and obese individuals. METHODS: A cohort study was performed with 437,828 Korean adults who were followed up for up to 14 years. Steatosis was diagnosed based on ultrasonography; fibrosis severity was determined by the fibrosis 4 (FIB-4) score. Vital status and liver-related deaths were ascertained thro
OBJECTIVES: The clinical significance of liver steatosis has been studied because steatosis plays a role in the progression of liver fibrosis. Nevertheless, the impact of steatosis in the early stage of fibrosis in non-obese young men with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is poorly understood. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of hepatic steatosis, assess the relationship between hepatic steatosis and fibrosis and to assess the laboratory parameters for predicting clinic
OBJECTIVE: The association of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome has been documented for obese men and middle-aged men. This study was designed to determine the relationship between NAFLD and the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) to predict preclinical diabetes in nondiabetic young male patients (<30 years old). METHODS: A total of 75 male patients who had elevated liver enzymes and who were diagnosed with NAFLD were enrolled in this study. A
BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is associated with a reduced risk of developing dyslipidemia and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases. Given that the gut microbiota plays a significant role in cholesterol metabolism, we compared the differences in gut microbial diversity and composition between HBV-infected and uninfected subjects. RESULTS: A prospective case-control study was designed comprising healthy controls (group A) and HBV-infected individuals (group B) in a 1:1 ratio (57 par
Abstract The predictive role of noninvasive liver fibrosis scores on liver‐related mortality in patients with chronic hepatitis B below 40 years of age remains unclarified. We examined the association of liver fibrosis scores with liver‐related mortality in young (<40 years) and older adults with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. A cohort study was performed in 21,360 HBsAg‐positive Korean adults without liver cirrhosis or liver cancer at baseline who were followed up for up to 18 years. The
The study aimed to determine the pattern of fever resolution among febrile patients undergoing treatment for acute pyelonephritis (APN) and prove that switching therapy based solely on persistent fever beyond 72 hours of antibiotics treatment may be unwarranted. For the purpose of this study, non-responders were defined as those patients who had a persistent fever over 72 hours after the initiation of antibiotic therapy. Responders were defined as those patients who became afebrile in less than 7
BACKGROUND/AIMS: When diagnosed, most patients with pancreatic head cancer are defined as having an unresectable tumor, and thus appropriate relief of main symptoms, such as, obstructive jaundice, duodenal obstruction, and pain, is the major concern. However, debate continues concerning the efficacy of gastrojejunostomy at preventing duodenal obstruction. In this study, we evaluated the effects of palliative gastrojejunostomy on the quality of life of patients with unresectable pancreatic head c
