Ulinastatin is a urinary trypsin inhibitor, originally extracted and purified from human urine. Ulinastatin has cytoprotective effects against ischemic injury in several organs. In the present study, the neuroprotective effects of ulinastatin following ischemic cerebral injury in the hippocampus of gerbils was investigated. To induce transient global ischemia in gerbils, the common carotid arteries were occluded using aneurysm clips for 5 min, and the clips were then removed. Ulinastatin was sub

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) deteriorates various physical functions, in particular, bladder problems occur as a result of damage to the spinal cord. Stem cell therapy for SCI has been focused as the new strategy to treat the injuries and to restore the lost functions. The oral mucosa cells are considered as the stem cells-like progenitor cells. In the present study, we investigated the effects of oral mucosa stem cells on the SCI-induced neurogenic bladder in relation with apoptotic neu

Staphylococcus infection was the most common organism found in infection of athletics, and tuberculosis (TB) was rare. Although genitourinary tuberculosis (GUTB) was the most common subtype of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) in the past, it was recently reported to account for less than 0.5% of all patients with EPTB and 1.5% of all patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). And, there are few cases reported about concomitant tuberculous infection of testis and prostate. Pubic pain is a commo

Caffeine may promote incontinence through its diuretic effect, particularly in individuals with underlying detrusor overactivity, in addition to increasing muscle contraction of the bladder smooth muscle. Caffeine may also affect bladder function via central micturition centers, including the medial preoptic area, ventrolateral periaqueductal gray, and pontine micturition center. However, the biochemical mechanisms of caffeine in central micturition centers affecting bladder function remain uncl

A novel intracerebral hemorrhage-induced rat model of neurogenic voiding dysfunction: Analysis of lower urinary tract function
Young Sam Cho, Il‐Gyu Ko, Chang‐Ju Kim, Khae Hawn Kim
SJR Q2Molecular Medicine ReportsOA

Neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) is a major problem in patients with various neurological disorders, and may result in debilitating symptoms and serious complications, including chronic renal failure and recurrent urinary tract infections. Clinically, stroke is associated with voiding dysfunction. However, lower urinary tract function evaluation in an intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) model has not, to the best of our knowledge, been reported. Therefore, in the present study, lowe

Botulinum toxin in spinal cord injury patients with neurogenic detrusor overactivity
Young Sam Cho, Khae Hawn Kim
SJR Q2Journal of Exercise RehabilitationOA

Evidence for the efficacy and safety of intravesical onabotulinum toxin A (onabotA) injections has led to them being licensed in many countries, including Korea, for the treatment of patients with urinary incontinence due to neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) resulting from spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis who are refractory or intolerant to anticholinergic medications. OnabotA injections have an inhibitory effect on acetylcholine release for up to 10 months, with a recommended dose

Evaluation of PTEN Inhibitor Following Spinal Cord Injury on Recovery of Voiding Efficiency and Motor Function Observed by Regeneration in Spinal Cord
Young Sam Cho, Su Jin Kim, Khae Hawn Kim
SJR Q2International Neurourology JournalOA

PURPOSE: Neurogenic bladder (NB) associated with spinal cord injury (SCI) is a serious health problem. However, no effective treatment has been developed for SCI patients with NB. Phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN) inhibitors have been proposed as a promising option for inducing neural regeneration. Therefore, we investigated the effects of a tissue gene nerve (TGN), PTEN inhibitor, on voiding function, motor function, and the expression of growth factors after SCI. M

Without understanding of molecular mechanisms and pathology, we cannot resolve the mystery of diagnosis and treatment of IC/BPS. We expect that comprehensive understanding of many aspects of IC/BPS, including the pathology, will be helpful to patients and physicians dealing with IC/BPS.
