15The ability to coordinate carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) metabolism enables plants to regulate development and metabolic responses to different environmental conditions. The regulator(s) or sensor(s) that monitor crosstalk between biosynthetic pathways and ultimately control the flow of C or N through them have remained elusive. We used an antisense strategy to demonstrate that the putative glutamate receptor 1.1 (AtGLR1.1) functions as a regulator of C and N metabolism in Arabidopsis . Seeds from
The involvement of the putative glutamate receptor 1.1 (AtGLR1.1) gene in the regulation of abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis and signaling was investigated in Arabidopsis. Seeds from AtGLR1.1-deficient (antiAtGLR1.1) lines had increased sensitivity to exogenous ABA with regard to the effect of the hormone on the inhibition of seed germination and root growth. Seed germination, which was inhibited by an animal ionotropic glutamate receptor antagonist, 6,7-dinitroquinoxaline-2,3-[1H,4H]-dione, was
No RSV and IFV winter epidemics were observed during the 2020-2021 season in Korea.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the incidence and characteristics of cholangitis after Kasai portoenterostomy (KPE) in patients with biliary atresia. We also examined the distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of the causative pathogens, which were isolated in sterile specimens, such as blood and ascites. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed in patients with biliary atresia who underwent KPE at Severance Children's Hospital in Korea from 2006 to 2015. The Kaplan-Meier
Neurologic complications are serious complications after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and significantly contribute to morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical features and prognosis in pediatric patients who had neurologic complications after allogeneic HSCT. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of children and adolescents (19 years old or younger) who underwent allogeneic HSCT at our institution from 2000 to 2012. A total of
In this cohort study with a time series analysis of children and youth in South Korea with KD, respiratory infections caused by rhinovirus and respiratory syncytial virus and varicella outbreaks were significantly correlated with KD at 1 to 3 months before KD outbreaks.
A novel up-stream transmitter for wavelength division multiplexed-passive optical network (WDM-PON) using a self-seeded reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) was proposed. The RSOA was self-seeded by an amplified spontaneous emission itself using a fibre Bragg grating without an additional optical source. The side mode suppression ratio of self-seeded output signal and the extinction ratio were ∼28 and 8.1 dB, respectively. Required power for 10−9 BER at 622 Mb/s was about −28 dBm an
Although innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) play fundamental roles in mucosal barrier functionality and tissue homeostasis, ILC-related mechanisms underlying intestinal barrier function, homeostatic regulation, and graft rejection in intestinal transplantation (ITx) patients have yet to be thoroughly defined. We found protective type 3 NKp44+ILCs (ILC3s) to be significantly diminished in newly transplanted allografts, compared to allografts at 6 months, whereas proinflammatory type 1 NKp44–ILCs (ILC1s
BACKGROUND: We investigated the epidemiologic characteristics of childhood brain tumors (CBT) in Korea, and compared our findings with those from the United States. METHODS: We searched the Korea National Cancer Incidence Database of the Korea Central Cancer Registry (KCCR) from 2005 to 2014, which included all Korean patients with CBT aged 0 to 19 years at diagnosis. The age-standardized incidence rates (ASR) and the 5-year relative survival rate (RSR) were determined. The Central Brain Tumor R
BACKGROUND: We investigated the characteristics and clinical outcomes of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-related pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) hospitalization and assessed the palivizumab (PZ) prophylaxis eligibility according to different guidelines from Korea, EU, and USA. METHODS: In this multicenter study, children <18 years of age hospitalized in six PICU from different hospitals due to severe RSV infection between September 2008 and March 2013 were included. A retrospective chart
Activated phosphoinositide 3-kinase δ syndrome (APDS)1 is caused by gain-of-function mutations in <i>PIK3CD</i>, which encodes the catalytic p110δ subunit of phosphoinositide 3 kinase. We describe three patients with APDS1, the first thereof in Korea. Therein, we investigated clinical manifestations of APDS1 and collected data on the efficacy and safety profile of sirolimus, a mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitor and pathway-specific targeted medicine. The same heterozygous <i>PIK3CD</i> muta
Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) include a variety of heterogeneous genetic disorders in which defects in the immune system lead to an increased susceptibility to infections and other complications. Accurate, prompt diagnosis of IEI is crucial for treatment plan and prognostication. In this study, clinical utility of clinical exome sequencing (CES) for diagnosis of IEI was evaluated. For 37 Korean patients with suspected symptoms, signs, or laboratory abnormalities associated with IEI, CES that c
Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), the most recently described family of lymphoid cells, play fundamental roles in tissue homeostasis through the production of key cytokine. Group 1 ILCs, comprised of conventional natural killer cells (cNKs) and type 1 ILCs (ILC1s), have been implicated in regulating immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. However, the role of ILC1s in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is unclear. Here, we investigated the role of ILC1 and
This large population-based study highlights the high IPD incidence rate and RR in Korean patients with asplenia/hyposplenism. Increased awareness and effective prevention strategies are needed for these high-risk populations, especially children aged <5 years.
