Our data show that atrophy in the frontostriatal areas and cholinergic structures, as well as frontal lobe associated cognitive performance, may act as predictors of dementia in PD-MCI patients, suggesting distinctive patterns of cognitive profiles and a neuroanatomical basis for progressive PD-MCI.

OBJECTIVES: Multidrug resistance protein 2 (MRP2, ABCC2) plays an important role in the biliary clearance of a wide variety of endogenous and exogenous toxic compounds. Therefore, polymorphisms and mutations in the MRP2 gene may affect individual susceptibility to hepatotoxic reactions. METHODS: Associations between genetic variations of MRP2 and toxic hepatitis were investigated using integrated population genetic analysis and functional molecular studies. RESULTS: Using a gene scanning method,

Reduction in levels of matrix metalloproteinases and increased expression of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase—2 in response to mild hypothermia therapy in experimental stroke

SJR Q1Journal of neurosurgeryOA

OBJECT: Mild hypothermia is a robust neuroprotectant, and the results of prospective clinical trials have indicated that it may improve neurological outcome in certain instances. One aspect of this protection has been associated with the prevention of blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been implicated in BBB disruption because they can degrade the extracellular matrix. In this study the authors explored the relationship between hypothermia and MMPs and wh

Heat Shock Protein 70 (HSP70) Induction: Chaperonotherapy for Neuroprotection after Brain Injury
Jong Youl Kim, Sumit Barua, Mei Huang, Joohyun Park, Midori A. Yenari, Jong Eun Lee
SJR Q1CellsOA

The 70 kDa heat shock protein (HSP70) is a stress-inducible protein that has been shown to protect the brain from various nervous system injuries. It allows cells to withstand potentially lethal insults through its chaperone functions. Its chaperone properties can assist in protein folding and prevent protein aggregation following several of these insults. Although its neuroprotective properties have been largely attributed to its chaperone functions, HSP70 may interact directly with proteins in

SJR Q2Yonsei Medical JournalOA

Collagen-based membranous materials of various shapes (gel, film, sponge) are known to be the most promising materials in terms of facilitating the regeneration of dermal defects. In this study, dense and porous collagen membranes were fabricated using air-drying and freeze-drying processes, respectively, and the effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the degree of membrane crosslinking was evaluated by in vitro biodegradation and mechanical testing. A non-irradiated membrane group was used as

The 70-kDa heat shock protein (Hsp70) as a therapeutic target for stroke
Jong Youl Kim, Yeonseung Han, Jong Eun Lee, Midori A. Yenari
SJR Q1Expert Opinion on Therapeutic TargetsOA

INTRODUCTION: The 70-kDa heat shock protein (Hsp70) is a cytosolic chaperone which facilitates protein folding, degradation, complex assembly, and translocation. Following stroke, these functions have the potential to lead to cytoprotection, and this has been demonstrated using genetic mutant models, direct gene transfer or the induction of Hsp70 via heat stress, approaches which limit its translational utility. Recently, the investigation of Hsp70-inducing pharmacological compounds, which, thro

MicroRNA-Let-7a regulates the function of microglia in inflammation
Kyoung Joo Cho, Juhyun Song, Yumi Oh, Jong Eun Lee
SJR Q2Molecular and Cellular NeuroscienceOA

Microglia have multiple functions in cerebrovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Regulation of microglial function during inflammatory stress is important for treatment of central nervous system (CNS) diseases because microglia secrete various substances that affect neurons and glia. MicroRNA-Let-7a (miR-Let-7a) is a tumor suppressor miRNA that has been reported to target transcripts that encode proteins involved in apoptosis. In the present study, we examined the essential role of miR-Let-7

Glutathione Protects Brain Endothelial Cells from Hydrogen Peroxide-Induced Oxidative Stress by Increasing Nrf2 Expression
Juhyun Song, So Mang Kang, Won Taek Lee, Kyung Ah Park, Kyoung Min Lee, Jong Eun Lee
SJR Q2Experimental NeurobiologyOA

Glutathione (GSH) protects cells against oxidative stress by playing an antioxidant role. Protecting brain endothelial cells under oxidative stress is key to treating cerebrovascular diseases and neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease and Huntington's disease. In present study, we investigated the protective effect of GSH on brain endothelial cells against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). We showed that GSH attenuates H2O2-induced production of nitric oxide (NO), reactive oxygen speci

Agmatine ameliorates type 2 diabetes induced-Alzheimer's disease-like alterations in high-fat diet-fed mice via reactivation of blunted insulin signalling
Somang Kang, Chul Hoon Kim, Hosung Jung, Eosu Kim, Ho‐Taek Song, Jong Eun Lee
SJR Q1NeuropharmacologyOA

The risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is higher in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Previous studies in high-fat diet-induced AD animal models have shown that brain insulin resistance in these animals leads to the accumulation of amyloid beta (Aβ) and the reduction in GSK-3β phosphorylation, which promotes tau phosphorylation to cause AD. No therapeutic treatments that target AD in T2DM patients have yet been discovered. Agmatine, a primary amine derived from l-arginine, has exhibit
