15Standard upper-limb motor function impairment assessments, such as the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), are a critical aspect of rehabilitation after neurological disorders. These assessments typically take a long time (about 30 min for the FMA) for a clinician to perform on a patient, which is a severe burden in a clinical environment. In this paper, we propose a framework for automating upper-limb motor assessments that uses low-cost sensors to collect movement data. The sensor data is then proces
Data scarcity in human reliability analysis (HRA) has been a major challenge in the quantification process. Many institutes have collected HRA data through experiments using full-scope simulators with actual operators. Nevertheless, there are still some limitations to relying solely on full-scope studies. This paper aims to propose how full-scope data collection studies can be supported through the Simplified Human Error Experimental Program (SHEEP). The SHEEP framework was developed by Idaho Na
Many industries apply traditional controllers to automate manual control. In recent years, artificial intelligence controllers applied with deep-learning techniques have been suggested as advanced controllers that can achieve goals from many industrial domains, such as humans. Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) is a powerful method for these controllers to learn how to achieve their specific operational goals. As DRL controllers learn through sampling from a target system, they can overcome the l
In the past several decades, the Internet has dramatically changed the way modern society communicates. In particular, online media have altered the method by which rumors are transmitted, from hearing those rumors via word of mouth among people to seeing rumors written as online messages. As a consequence of this change, many individuals and organizations have been greatly damaged by malicious online rumors. And although the manner in which rumors are circulated has evolved in the manner descri
Since the purpose of treadmill-based locomotor training is to transfer lower extremity coordinative skill to overground walking (OW), it needs to simulate OW as closely as possible for optimal skill transfer. Typical treadmill walking at a preset constant speed is different from realistic overground walking because it is less engaging and more automatic. As a remedy for the limitation, this paper investigates a novel treadmill control scheme that allows users to change walking speed freely. It f
BACKGROUND: Existing treadmill-based locomotion training, which has been used for gait function recovery, still has limitations, such as less attentive training. Interactive treadmills (ITMs) were developed to overcome these limitations, but it has not yet been verified that ITMs can make the user pay closer attention to walk training. METHODS: An experimental comparison between ITMs and conventional treadmills was conducted by measuring the level of the user's attention using functional near-in
Human-induced initiating events, also called Category B actions in human reliability analysis, are operator actions that may lead directly to initiating events. Most conventional probabilistic safety analyses typically assume that the frequency of initiating events also includes the probability of human-induced initiating events. However, some regulatory documents require Category B actions to be specifically analyzed and quantified in probabilistic safety analysis. An explicit modeling of Categ
Purpose: Upper limb hemiparesis is the most common impairment in stroke survivors, and adequate assessment is crucial for setting the rehabilitation strategy and monitoring the effect of treatment. However, adequate timely assessments are difficult due to the limited accessibility to clinics for stroke survivors. We designed this study to investigate whether teleassessments for motor impairments of the spastic elbow (i.e., passive range of motion (PROM), muscle strength, and spasticity) are feas
Interactive treadmills were developed to improve the simulation of overground walking when compared to conventional treadmills. However, currently available interactive treadmills are expensive and inconvenient, which limits their use. We propose a low-cost and convenient version of the interactive treadmill that does not require expensive equipment and a complicated setup. As a substitute for high-cost sensors, such as motion capture systems, a low-cost motion sensor was used to recognize the s
Clinical assessment of spasticity tends to be subjective because of the nature of the in-person assessment; severity of spasticity is judged based on the muscle tone felt by a clinician during manual manipulation of a patient's limb. As an attempt to standardize the clinical assessment of spasticity, we developed HESS (Haptic Elbow Spasticity Simulator), a programmable robotic system that can provide accurate and consistent haptic responses of spasticity and thus can be used as a training tool f
Many studies have used motor imagery-based brain-computer interface (MI-BCI) systems for stroke rehabilitation to induce brain plasticity. However, they mainly focused on detecting motor imagery but did not consider the effect of false positive (FP) detection. The FP could be a threat to patients with stroke as it can induce wrong-directed brain plasticity that would result in adverse effects. In this study, we proposed a rehabilitative MI-BCI system that focuses on rejecting the FP. To this end
In rehabilitation, the Fugl-Meyer assessment (FMA) is a typical clinical instrument to assess upper-extremity motor function of stroke patients, but it cannot measure fine changes of motor function (both in recovery and deterioration) due to its limited sensitivity. This paper introduces a sensor-based automated FMA system that addresses this limitation with a continuous rating algorithm. The system consists of a depth sensor (Kinect V2) and an algorithm to rate the continuous FM scale based on
Spontaneous perforation is a very rare complication of pyometra. The clinical findings of perforated pyometra usually mimic perforation of the gastrointestinal tract. In most cases a correct diagnosis can be made only by laparotomy. In our case, the patient's pyometra was sealed and she complained only of mild abdominal pain and showed no signs of peritonitis. Ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) findings were not suggestive of uterine rupture. However, T2-weighted magnetic resonance ima
