15A survey for aflatoxin B(1) (AFB(1)) was conducted on 88 food-grade rice samples randomly collected during July and August 2002 in Seoul, Korea. The presence of AFB(1) was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and the positive samples from enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were confirmed using high-performance liquid chromatography. Besides this, from the surveying data from the literature published since 1997, the intake of AFB(1) from food in Korea was calculated and compared with t
The present study shows that arthroscopic one-tunnel transosseous repair is a good treatment strategy for TFCC foveal tears in terms of reliable pain relief, functional improvement, and re-establishment of DRUJ stability.
Peripheral nerve injury results in significant sensory and motor functional deficits. Although direct neurorrhaphy in the early phase may reduce its devastating effects, direct end-to-end neurorrhaphy is sometimes impossible owing to a defect at the injured site of the nerve. Autogenous nerve graft is a primary consideration for peripheral nerve defects; however, significant morbidity of the donor site is inevitable. Recently, the treatment using engineered synthetic nerve conduits has been rega
Peripheral nerve injury causes severe loss of motor and sensory functions, consequently increasing morbidity in affected patients. An autogenous nerve graft is considered the current gold standard for reconstructing nerve defects and recovering lost neurological functions; however, there are certain limitations to this method, such as limited donor nerve supply. With advances in regenerative medicine, recent research has focused on the fabrication of tissue-engineered nerve grafts as promising a
The joint angle during gait is an important indicator, such as injury risk index, rehabilitation status evaluation, etc. To analyze gait, inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors have been used in studies and continuously developed; however, they are difficult to utilize in daily life because of the inconvenience of having to attach multiple sensors together and the difficulty of long-term use due to the battery consumption required for high data sampling rates. To overcome these problems, this s
The Wagstaffe fracture can be a good diagnostic clue of ankle diastasis in Weber type B lateral malleolar fracture. The accurate reduction and fixation of the avulsed fragment is important for restoration of the stable distal tibiofibular joint and to prevent the chronic ankle joint pain caused by impingement of the avulsed fragment.
PURPOSE: To compare outcomes at different time periods following arthroscopic triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) transosseous foveal repair within 6 months, between 6 and 12 months, and more than 12 months from injury. METHODS: Consecutive patients treated with arthroscopic TFCC foveal repair using the uniform one-tunnel transosseous suture technique by a surgeon from 2014 to 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were assigned to 1 of 3 groups according to time between injury an
"Hip-huggers" may be a precipitating factor for meralgia paresthetica (MP), especially in thin persons with an aberrant pathway of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). We describe a 25-year-old woman with a long-standing history of MP caused by an abnormal course of the LFCN and tight trousers, specifically hip-huggers. Ultrasonography was useful for detecting the lesion site and the abnormal pathway of the LFCN. After neurectomy of the LFCN, most of the symptoms of MP were relieved, but
Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury caused by abrupt restoration of the circulation after prolonged ischemic insult induces significant morbidity after reconstructive microsurgery. The authors investigated whether a postconditioning (post-con) procedure attenuated skeletal muscle I/R injury and protected muscular function. Three hours of complete ischemia was induced by occluding the muscular branches of rat extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle. The post-con procedure was started at the end of i
Reperfusion injury by the abrupt restoration of circulation after the prolonged ischemia has been remained unsolved problem in the reconstructive microsurgery. We tested the hypothesis that a procedure of intermittent interruption of reperfusion, i.e., postconditioning (post-con) attenuates ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury of rat epigastric skin flap. A complete 4 hours of ischemia was generated by occlusion of the pedicle of dissected flap. The post-con procedure was started at the end of isch
This study investigates the role of extracellular SOD (EC-SOD), the major extracellular antioxidant enzyme, in skeletal muscle ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury. Pedicled cremaster muscle flaps from homozygous EC-SOD knockout (EC-SOD-/-) and wild-type (WT) mice were subjected to 4.5-h ischemia and 90-min reperfusion followed by functional and molecular analyses. Our results revealed that EC-SOD-/- mice showed significantly profound I/R injury compared with WT littermates. In particular, ther
Sagittal parameters and possible relationships between sagittal parameters and symptoms were found to be significantly different in achondroplasia patients and normal healthy controls. The present study shows that sagittal spinal and pelvic parameters can assist the treatment of spinal disorders in achondroplasia patients.
Bortezomib effectively blocks nuclear factor-kappaB activation in attenuating muscle reperfusion injury through inhibiting nuclear factor-kappaB inhibitory protein degradation. Therefore, inhibition of proteasome activity may provide a novel therapeutic strategy for the treatment of skeletal muscle reperfusion injury.
