Morpho-Phonological Processes in Korean
Jongho Jun
Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Linguistics

Abstract It has been an ongoing issue within generative linguistics how to properly analyze morpho-phonological processes. Morpho-phonological processes typically have exceptions, but nonetheless they are often productive. Such productive, but exceptionful, processes are difficult to analyze, since grammatical rules or constraints are normally invoked in the analysis of a productive pattern, whereas exceptions undermine the validity of the rules and constraints. In addition, productivity of a mo

Place assimilation is not the result of gestural overlap: evidence from Korean and English
Jongho Jun
SJR Q1Phonology

In the theory of articulatory phonology Browman & Goldstein (1986, 1990, 1992) claim that place assimilation is mainly the result of the overlap of gestures and the perception of these overlapping gestures as a single gesture. Ohala (1990) makes a similar claim. The present study provides interesting experimental evidence against this explanation of assimilation as a result of gestural overlap and resulting misperception, and for the importance of gestural reduction.

Metrical weight consistency in Korean partial reduplication
Jongho Jun
SJR Q1Phonology

Korean possesses a rich onomatopoeic and mimetic vocabulary that may be augmented by partial reduplication and/or suffixation. This augmented category, which is referred to as partial extension in Jun (1993), is semantically characterised by a lengthening, or temporal extension of the base form:

Multiple Stem-final Variants in Korean Native Nouns and Loanwords
Jongho Jun, Jee Hyun Lee

The stem-final variation patterns of Korean nouns have recently turned out to be very complicated. Most importantly, several obstruents are involved as free variants. To verify the variation patterns and check the validity of certain previous analyses relying on multiple stochastic rules and constraints, the present study provides an experimental investigation of Korean native nouns and loanword adaptations. The results mostly confirm the occurrence of multiple variants and many predictions whic

Korean n-insertion: a mismatch between data and learning
Jongho Jun
SJR Q1PhonologyOA

This paper explores the variable application of n-insertion in Korean. Several tendencies emerge from the distribution of n-insertion in existing Korean words, using data drawn from a dictionary and from surveys and experimental studies. Most, but not all, of these tendencies are mirrored in the results of experiments involving novel words, suggesting that Korean speakers are aware of the differential influence of certain phonological factors on the probability of the application of n-insertion.

Positional Effects in Consonant Clusters
Jongho Jun
The Blackwell Companion to Phonology

It is commonly observed across languages that phonological processes may apply only in certain (“non‐prominent”) positions. In contrast, elements in other (“prominent”) positions typically resist or trigger these processes. Such prominent vs . non‐prominent positional distinctions are further applicable to more general patterns of licensing and neutralization of phonological contrasts; namely, featural/segmental contrasts are likely to be licensed in prominent positions, whereas these contrasts

Speakers’ knowledge of alternations is asymmetrical: Evidence from Seoul Korean verb paradigms
Jongho Jun, Adam Albright
SJR Q1Journal of LinguisticsOA

This paper investigates whether and how speakers track the relative frequency of different patterns of alternation in the lexicon, by investigating speakers’ behavior when they are faced with unpredictability in allomorph selection. We conducted a wug test on Seoul Korean verb paradigms, testing whether speakers can generalize reliable lexical patterns. The test was performed in two directions. In forward formation test, the pre-vocalic base and pre-consonantal non-base forms were the stimulus a

VARIATION IN KOREAN STEM-FINAL OBSTRUENTS
Jongho Jun

The typical data patterns employed in traditional analysis within generative phonology are systematic with no variation. Even when exceptional or variant output forms may be attested, they have often been ignored in formal analysis. However, the variable, gradient, patterns recently attract much attention with the understanding that the exceptions and variants occur in a systematic way in many cases. The results of some recent research on the variation data (Bybee 2001; Boersma and Hayes 2001; Z

Stem-final variation in Korean verbal paradigm
전종호

Jun, Jongho. 2007. Stem-final variation in Korean verbal paradigm, Korean Journal of Linguistics, 32-2, 265-292. Prevocalic allomorphs of Korean nouns show stem-final obstruent variation: for instance, /pathɨl/ ‘field, accusative’ [pathɨl] ~ [pasɨl]. In most analyses on the variation (notably, Ko 1989; Y. Kang 2003a,b; Albright 2005a,b), the isolation form is adopted as the base to derive prevocalic variants, mainly based on the fact that the isolation form is the most frequent member of the par
