15In this case series study, inapparent infections in children may have been associated with silent COVID-19 transmission in the community. Heightened surveillance using laboratory screening will allow detection in children with unrecognized SARS-CoV-2 infection.
BACKGROUND: The objective of this retrospective cohort study was to define the efficacy and safety of fractionated radiotherapy (FRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for the treatment of patients with pituitary adenoma. METHODS: Between January 1995 and April 2006, 125 consecutive patients with pituitary adenomas (54 hormone-secreting adenomas and 71 nonsecretory adenomas) received FRT or underwent SRS. Sixty-four patients received FRT, for which the mean total dose was 50.4 grays (Gy) (rang
Cholangiocarcinomas are intrahepatic bile duct carcinomas that are known to have a poor prognosis. Sesquiterpene lactone parthenolide, which is the principal active component in medicinal plants, has been used to treat tumors. Parthenolide effectively induced apoptosis in all four cholangiocarcinoma cell lines in a dose-dependent manner. However, the sarcomatous SCK cells were more sensitive to parthenolide than the other adenomatous cholangiocarcinoma cells. Therefore, this study investigated w
Although previous studies suggest that nanotopographical features influence properties and behaviors of stem cells, only a few studies have attempted to derive clinically useful somatic cells from human pluripotent stem cells using nanopatterned surfaces. In the present study, we report that polystyrene nanopore-patterned surfaces significantly promote the pancreatic differentiation of human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells. We compared different diameters of nanopores and showed tha
Highly homogeneous and functional stem cell-derived hepatocyte-like cells (HLCs) are considered a promising option in the cell-based therapy of liver disease and the development of effective in vitro toxicity screening tools. However, the purity of cells and expression and/or activity of drug metabolizing enzymes in stem cell-derived HLCs are usually too low to be useful for clinical or in vitro applications. Here, we describe a highly optimized hepatic differentiation protocol, which produces >
LF cells interact with macrophage-like cells to produce angiogenesis-related factors except TGF-β1. Activated LF cells that have been exposed to macrophage, can impact the inducement of angiogenesis-related factors, suggesting that fibrosis and scarring during inflammatory reaction is the major pathomechanism of LF hypertrophy.
The macrolide resistance rate of M. pneumoniae has risen rapidly over 2 recent, consecutive epidemics, and this has been associated with a prolonged clinical course and increased use of corticosteroids to treat pediatric M. pneumoniae pneumonia.
Hepatitis A is a vaccine preventable disease. Improvement in the socio-economic status and general public health of Korea over the last 30 years has led to a shift in the seroprevalence of hepatitis A. This lowered endemicity has caused an upward shift in the average age of infection, resulting in a larger number of individuals at risk of clinically significant hepatitis A infection. Now in Korea, for those aged less than 10 years old, the anti-HAV prevalence was above 50%, which is mainly contr
Ligand-induced internalization of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is an important process for regulating signal transduction, cellular dynamics, and cell-cell communication. Here, we demonstrate that nonmuscle myosin II (NM II) is required for the internalization of the EGFR and to trigger the EGFR-dependent activation of ERK and AKT. The EGFR was identified as a protein that interacts with NM II by co-immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry analysis. This interaction requires both
Free-living amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, destroys target cells through contact-dependent mechanisms, such as phagocytosis and/or trogocytosis. A previous experiment showed that the nf-actin gene consisted of 1.2 kbp, produced a 50.1 kDa recombinant protein (Nf-actin), and was localized on the cytoskeleton, pseudopodia and amoebastome. In this study, cellular characterization of the nf-actin gene concerned with contact-dependent mechanisms in N fowleri was performed. The nf-actin gene was amplified
