Adaptive mammographic image enhancement using first derivative and local statistics
Jong‐Kook Kim, Jeong Mi Park, Koun Sik Song, Hyun Wook Park
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging

This paper proposes an adaptive image enhancement method for mammographic images, which is based on the first derivative and the local statistics. The adaptive enhancement method consists of three processing steps. The first step is to remove the film artifacts which may be misread as microcalcifications. The second step is to compute the gradient images by using the first derivative operators. The third step is to enhance the important features of the mammographic image by adding the adaptively

Dynamic Resource Management in Energy Constrained Heterogeneous Computing Systems Using Voltage Scaling
Jong‐Kook Kim, Howard Jay Siegel, Anthony A. Maciejewski, Rudolf Eigenmann
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems

An ad hoc grid is a wireless heterogeneous computing environment without a fixed infrastructure. This study considers wireless devices that have different capabilities, have limited battery capacity, support dynamic voltage scaling, and are expected to be used for eight hours at a time and then recharged. To maximize the performance of the system, it is essential to assign resources to tasks (match) and order the execution of tasks on each resource (schedule) in a manner that exploits the hetero

Dynamic mapping in a heterogeneous environment with tasks having priorities and multiple deadlines

In a distributed heterogeneous computing system, the resources have different capabilities and tasks have different requirements. To maximize the performance of the system, it is essential to assign resources to tasks (match) and order the execution of tasks on each resource (schedule in a manner that exploits the heterogeneity of the resources and tasks. The mapping (defined as matching and scheduling) of tasks onto machines with varied computational capabilities has been shown, in general, to

A QoS performance measure framework for distributed heterogeneous networks
Jong‐Kook Kim, D. Hensgen, T. Kidd, Howard Jay Siegel, D. St. John, Cynthia Irvine, Tim Levin, Norman Wayne Porter, Viktor K. Prasanna, Richard F. Freund

In a distributed heterogeneous computing environment, users' tasks are allocated resources to simultaneously satisfy, to varying degrees, the tasks' different, and possibly conflicting, quality of service (QoS) requirements. When the total demand placed on system resources by the tasks, for a given interval of time, exceeds the resources available, some tasks will receive degraded service or no service at all. One part of a measure to quantify the success of a resource management system (RMS) in

INVESTIGATION OF HIGH-NONLINEARITY GLASS FIBERS FOR POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS IN ULTRAFAST NONLINEAR FIBER DEVICES
Jong‐Kook Kim
VTechWorks (Virginia Tech)OA

Nonlinear fiber devices have been attracting considerable attention in recent years, due to their inherent ultrafast response time and potential applications in optical communication systems. They usually require long fibers to generate sufficient nonlinear phase shifts, since nonlinearities of conventional silica-core silica-clad fibers are too low. These long devices, however, cause the serious problems of pulse walk-off, pulse broadening, and polarization fluctuation which are major limiting
