Specific Recruitment of Human Cohesin to Laser-induced DNA Damage
Jong-Soo Kim, Tatiana B. Krasieva, Vickie J. LaMorte, Alexander M. Taylor, Kyoko Yokomori
SJR Q1Journal of Biological ChemistryOA

Cohesin is a conserved multiprotein complex that plays an essential role in sister chromatid cohesion. During interphase, cohesin is required for the establishment of cohesion following DNA replication. Because cohesin mutants resulted in increased sensitivity to DNA damage, a role for cohesin in DNA repair was also suggested. However, it was unclear whether this was due to general perturbation of cohesion or whether cohesin has a specialized role at the damage site. We therefore used a laser mi

Independent and sequential recruitment of NHEJ and HR factors to DNA damage sites in mammalian cells

SJR Q1The Journal of Cell BiologyOA

Damage recognition by repair/checkpoint factors is the critical first step of the DNA damage response. DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) activate checkpoint signaling and are repaired by nonhomologous end-joining (NHEJ) and homologous recombination (HR) pathways. However, in vivo kinetics of the individual factor responses and the mechanism of pathway choice are not well understood. We report cell cycle and time course analyses of checkpoint activation by ataxia-telangiectasia mutated and damage s

Design and implementation of a high-efficiency on- board battery charger for electric vehicles with frequency control strategy
Jong-Soo Kim, Gyu-Yeong Choe, Hye-Man Jung, Byoung‐Kuk Lee, Youngjin Cho, Kyu-Bum Han

This paper presents a design and implementation of 3.3 kW on-board battery charger for electric vehicles or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. A series-loaded resonant dc-dc converter and frequency control are adopted in consideration of efficiency, reliability, volume, cost, and so on. In order to obtain high efficiency and less volume within 6 liters, a prototype of the charger is designed and implemented by using high frequency of 80-130 kHz and zero voltage switching method. The experimental

Reactive oxygen species‐dependent EndoG release mediates cisplatin‐induced caspase‐independent apoptosis in human head and neck squamous carcinoma cells

SJR Q1International Journal of CancerOA

Cisplatin is a chemotherapeutic agent that is widely used to treat cancers such as head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Previously, we have reported that cisplatin induced an early caspase-dependent apoptosis (8 hr) in a HNSCC cell, HN4. In this study, we examined a late caspase-independent apoptosis as well as an early caspase-dependent apoptosis in cisplatin-treated HN4 cells. While z-VAD-fmk, a pan-caspase inhibitor, blocked the caspase activities and protected cells from the early

Purpose. To examine the demographic characteristics, clinical features, surgical outcomes, and long-term prognoses of epiblepharon in Korean children. Methods. Epiblepharon patients who were followed for ≥ 6 month following surgical correction between January 2005 and December 2013. The patient demographics, clinical features, concomitant disorders, surgical outcomes, and complications were retrospectively reviewed. Results. A total of 768 epiblepharon records were included in the analysis. The

Aims: The naive or primitive states of stem cells (SCs) residing in specific niches are unstable and difficult to preserve in vitro. Vitamin C (VitC), in addition to suppressing oxygen radicals, exerts pleiotropic effects to preserve the core functions of SCs. However, this compound is labile and readily oxidized, resulting in cellular toxicity and preventing its reliable application in this context. We found that a VitC derivative, ascorbic acid 2-glucoside (AA2G), stably m

Subcapsular Cell Hyperplasia and Mast Cell Infiltration in the Adrenal Cortex of Mice: Comparative Study in 7 Inbred Strains.
Jong-Soo Kim, Hisayo Kubota, Yoshihiro Kiuchi, Kunio Doi, Junzo Saegusa
SJR Q1EXPERIMENTAL ANIMALSOA

Subcapsular cell hyperplasia (SCH) in the adrenal cortex of aged mice (13-15 months old) was frequent in both sexes of BALB/c, C3H/He, DBA/2J and IQI/Jic mice and in the females of A/J and C57BL/6, although the incidence and severity of SCH were considerably different among mouse strains. Mast cells were closely associated with SCH in the A/J, BALB/c, C57BL/6, DBA/2J and IQI/Jic mice, but not in the C3H/He strain. Compared with other strains, IQI/Jic mice had a significantly larger number of mas

SJR Q1Journal of neurosurgery

OBJECTIVE Direct and indirect bypass surgeries are recognized as the most effective treatments for preventing further stroke in adults with moyamoya disease (MMD). However, the risk factors for postoperative infarction after bypass surgery for MMD are not well established. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the risk factors for postoperative infarction. In particular, the authors sought to determine whether transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasonography measurements of mean fl

Reactivation of inactive X chromosome and post-transcriptional reprogramming of Xist in induced pluripotent stem cells

SJR Q2Journal of Cell ScienceOA

Direct reprogramming of somatic cells to pluripotent stem cells entails the obliteration of somatic cell memory and the reestablishment of epigenetic events. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) have been created by reprogramming somatic cells through the transduction of reprogramming factors. During cell reprogramming, female somatic cells must overcome at least one more barrier than male somatic cells in order to enter a pluripotent state, as they must reactivate an inactive X chromosome (Xi
