15There were 47 patients with congenital muscular torticollis who underwent operative release. After a mean follow-up of 74 months (60 to 90), they were divided into two groups, one aged one to four years (group 1) and the other aged five to 16 years (group 2). The outcomes were assessed by evaluating the following parameters: deficits of lateral flexion and rotation, craniofacial asymmetry, surgical scarring, residual contracture, subjective evaluation and degree of head tilt. The craniofacial as
Metatarsal lengthening by distraction osteogenesis was performed on 17 brachymetatarsia patients with 39 metatarsal bones. To lengthen the first metatarsal in an attempt to prevent development of varus deformity of the hindfoot after lengthening, horizontal lengthening in the anterior direction was performed rather than lengthening through the anatomical axis. In addition, care was taken to ensure that the fourth metatarsal bone screw did not interpose with the fifth extensor tendon during the f
The authors investigated the correlation between the clinical manifestations and the morphology of discoid lateral meniscus. Thirty-eight children, age 5 to 17 years, with 39 cases of discoid lateral meniscus underwent an arthroscopic procedure and magnetic resonance imaging. The two most frequent preoperative clinical manifestations were pain and extension block. In 19 cases without surface tear, the most frequent clinical manifestation was extension block. In the sagittal magnetic resonance im
The authors investigated 63 consecutive patients (average age 6 years 6 months) who underwent cross-fixation with three Kirschner wires after reduction of a completely displaced supracondylar fracture (type 3) of the humerus. All fractures were reduced and fixed by inserting two parallel Kirschner wires in the lateral side, followed by one crossed medial Kirschner wire under fluoroscopic guidance. Lateral pins were inserted in parallel or divergent fashion to ensure stability. With a medial cros
The authors treated congenital muscular torticollis by sternocleidomastoid muscle release in 32 patients over 8 years of age who had not received any prior medical treatment or in whom torticollis had recurred since initial treatment. The results were analyzed to compare clinical results after an average of 39 months (range 24-74 months) by dividing the patients into two groups: patients who were still in the growing period (group 1, n = 19) and patients who had finished growth (group 2, n = 13)
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic results of open wedge HTO below the tubercle for genu varum in relatively young patients. METHODS: Thirty-seven knees in 19 patients with genu varum treated by open wedge HTO below the tubercle between 2001 and 2008 were retrospectively studied. Median follow-up was 36 months (12-108), and median patient age at the time of surgery was 26 years (16-45). Clinical results were evaluated using Lysholm knee scores and Ho

This study shows a high prevalence of spinal deformity, limb malalignment, and foot abnormality in PWS. The prevalences of musculoskeletal abnormalities were not found to be affected by age, genotype, or obesity. However, several musculoskeletal abnormalities were found to be correlated with each other, namely, scoliosis and limb malalignment, kyphotic deformity, and foot abnormality or severe limb malalignment. The authors recommend that pediatric orthopaedic surgeons conduct systemic clinical

Summary: Three patients with chronic hip disease and progressive coxa vara deformity also had an unrecognized compensatory ipsilateral genu valgum until the primary hip deformity had been corrected operatively. This unrecognized genu valgum may become subtly worse in a growing child because of lateralization of the mechanical axis of the lower extremity with respect to the knee joint. Operative correction of coxa vara acutely moves the mechanical axis farther laterally, causing the occult genu v

Congenital hallux varus was successfully corrected by surgery with overall favorable outcome. Preoperatively, a LEB should be considered as a possible cause of the deformity in order to prevent recurrent or residual varus after surgery.
Serial changes of bone density in 26 femora and 22 tibiae that underwent leg lengthening by distraction osteogenesis were investigated by measuring the pixel value shown on a picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) monitor. The pixel value of the original cortex did not change significantly until the external fixator was removed. The pixel value of the distraction sites did not change significantly for the first 5-6 weeks/cm, but rapidly increased after 7 weeks/cm in the femur and tib
