Stage Migration Effect on Survival in Gastric Cancer Surgery With Extended Lymphadenectomy
Seong‐Ho Kong, Hyuk-Joon Lee, Hye Seong Ahn, Jong‐Won Kim, Woo Ho Kim, Kuhn Uk Lee, Han‐Kwang Yang
SJR Q1Annals of Surgery

The relationship between NexLN and survival is probably affected by stage migration in a high-volume gastric cancer center. The LN ratio system could be a better option to compensate for this effect, and the value of the prognosis prediction in this system increases with a higher NexLN.

CONTEXT: Detection of the BRAF V600E mutation in fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) specimens may increase the value of FNAC. OBJECTIVE: The objectives of the study was to compare the diagnostic performance of BRAF assays that differ in sensitivity and to examine the associations between the BRAF V600E mutation status and the clinicopathological features in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). DESIGN AND SETTING: Three molecular assays were performed in all subjects and compared with regard to

Proteomic Analysis of Host Cell Protein Dynamics in the Culture Supernatants of Antibody-Producing CHO Cells

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells are the most common cell line used for the production of therapeutic proteins including monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). Host cell proteins (HCPs), secreted and released from lysed cells, accumulate extracellularly during the cultures of recombinant CHO (rCHO) cells, potentially impairing product quality. In an effort to maintain good mAb quality during the cultures, HCPs accumulated extracellularly in batch and fed-batch cultures of a mAb-producing rCHO cell line

Therapeutic Effects of Saponins for the Prevention and Treatment of Cancer by Ameliorating Inflammation and Angiogenesis and Inducing Antioxidant and Apoptotic Effects in Human Cells
Muhammad Imran Khan, Gul Karima, Muhammad Imran Khan, Jin Hyuk Shin, Jong‐Won Kim
SJR Q1International Journal of Molecular SciencesOA

Saponins are natural compounds found in plants and have a diverse range of applications. However, the therapeutic potential of saponins in regulating cytotoxicity, angiogenesis, and inflammation in mammalian cells is yet to be explored. Here, we investigated the therapeutic effects of saponins from green tea by exploring the cytotoxic effects of saponins by inducing apoptosis in the human cancer cell lines hepatocellular carcinoma (HEPG2) and colorectal adenocarcinoma (HT29). The anti-angiogenes

We could not convincingly replicate most of the previous studies, a result that is possibly due to modest association between the suggested genes. Rather, we found a new candidate gene, ABCB1, for treatment response, which may provide a hypothesis on the relationship between the blood-brain distribution of CLZ and its clinical efficacy.

Coalescence behavior of two bubbles in stagnant liquids.
Jong‐Won Kim, Won Kook Lee
SJR Q3JOURNAL OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING OF JAPANOA

Coalescence frequency and lifetimes of thin aqueous films formed between nitrogen bubbles were measured in dilute solutions of sodium lauryl sulfate, n-amyl alcohol, and 1-butanol. The bubble pairs were formed on two adjacent capillary tubes by use of a microprocessor-controlled stepping motor, and the coalescence time was determined by an optical sensing method. For low-molecular weight alcohols such as 1-butanol and n-amyl alcohol, the transition concentration decreased with increase of bubbli

UGT1A7haplotype is associated with an increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma in hepatitis B carriers
Sun‐Young Kong, Chang‐Seok Ki, Byung Chul Yoo, Jong‐Won Kim
SJR Q1Cancer ScienceOA

The UGT1A7 gene encodes UDP-glucuronosyltransferase, a key enzyme catalyzing the glucuronidation of various carcinogens. In this study, we investigated the association between haplotypes of the whole UGT1A7 gene and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with chronic hepatitis B. Sequence analysis of exon1 and the promoter region of the UGT1A7 gene was carried out to determine haplotype profiles for 244 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, 223 hepatitis B carriers, and 314 hea

Haplotype Structure of the UDP-Glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (UGT1A1) Gene and Its Relationship to Serum Total Bilirubin Concentration in a Male Korean Population
Chang‐Seok Ki, Kyung‐A Lee, Soo‐Youn Lee, Hee-Jin Kim, Sang Sun Cho, Jun-Hee Park, Seunghee Cho, Kwang Min Sohn, Jong‐Won Kim
SJR Q1Clinical ChemistryOA

UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (UGT1A1) is the key enzyme for bilirubin conjugation. Defects in this enzyme can cause a nonhemolytic unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia, such as Crigler–Najjar syndrome type 1 (CN1) and 2 (CN2) and Gilbert syndrome (GS). In 1991, the cDNA of the human UGT1A1 gene was cloned, and this led to the identification of genetic defects in patients with CN1, CN2, and GS (1)(2)(3). It was shown that homozygous or compound heterozygous mutations of the UGT1A1 gene can lead to

Gaucher disease: Identification of three new mutations in the Korean and Chinese (Taiwanese) populations
Jong‐Won Kim, Benjamin Liou, Ming–Yang Lai, Elvira Ponce, Gregory A. Grabowski
SJR Q1Human Mutation

Gaucher Disease type 1, the most prevalent lysosomal disease among Caucasians, is due to defects in the activity of acid beta-glucosidase. Over 40 missense, nonsense, and more complex alleles have been described, primarily in Western populations. From these results, predictive genotype/phenotype correlations have been developed and used to guide genetic counseling and therapy. Only a few mutations have been described in Japanese patients with Gaucher disease and many of these have resulted in se

Thymidylate Synthase (TYMS) and Dihydropyrimidine Dehydrogenase (DPYD) Polymorphisms in the Korean Population for Prediction of 5-Fluorouracil-Associated Toxicity
Hyun-Jung Cho, Young Suk Park, Won Ki Kang, Jong‐Won Kim, Soo‐Youn Lee
SJR Q2Therapeutic Drug Monitoring

The important cellular proteins for 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) metabolism are the major target enzymes, thymidylate synthase, and the rate-limiting enzyme in the degradation pathway, dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase. Adverse drug reactions to 5-FU-based chemotherapy have been reported to be in part the result of polymorphisms in the thymidylate synthase (TYMS) and dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPYD) genes. Therefore, we examined the type and frequency of polymorphisms in the TYMS and DPYD genes in

Berberine Diminishes the Side Population and ABCG2 Transporter Expression in MCF-7 Breast Cancer Cells
Jong‐Won Kim, Eunyoung Ko, Wonshik Han, Incheol Shin, Seo Jin Park, Dong‐Young Noh
SJR Q2Planta Medica

The plant alkaloid berberine has many biological activities including the ability to induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, making it a potentially useful agent for targeting cancer cells. We have analyzed the effects of berberine on MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Berberine was added to MCF-7 cells in culture, and proliferation, side population (SP) cells and expression of ABCG2 were examined. Berberine caused a dose-dependent reduction in proliferation.
