15We performed a nanoscale confocal absorption spectral imaging to obtain the full absorption spectra (over the range 1.5-3.2 eV) within regions having different numbers of layers and studied the variation of optical transition depending on the atomic thickness of the MoS2 film. Three distinct absorption bands corresponding to A and B excitons and a high-energy background (BG) peak at 2.84 eV displayed a gradual redshift as the MoS2 film thickness increased from the monolayer, to the bilayer, to t
Monolayer tungsten disulfides (WS2) constitute a high quantum yield two-dimensional (2D) system, and can be synthesized on a large area using chemical vapor deposition (CVD), suggesting promising nanophotonics applications. However, spatially nonuniform photoluminescence (PL) intensities and peak wavelengths observed in single WS2 grains have puzzled researchers, with the origins of variation in relative contributions of excitons, trions, and biexcitons to the PL emission not well understood. He
Chemical treatment using bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonimide (TFSI) was shown to be particularly effective for increasing the photoluminescence (PL) of monolayer (1L) MoS2, suggesting a convenient method for overcoming the intrinsically low quantum yield of this material. However, the underlying atomic mechanism of the PL enhancement has remained elusive. Here, we report the microscopic origin of the defect healing observed in TFSI-treated 1L-MoS2 through a correlative combin
Structural defects can critically influence the electrical and optical properties of monolayered molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD); thus, convenient optical methods that can visualize grain boundaries (GBs) and other structural defects are in great demand. Although photoluminescence (PL) imaging can identify the presence of relatively large defects, the limited spatial resolution of PL imaging prevents the identification of nanosized structural defects in the m
Thermodynamics drive crystalline organic molecules to be crystallized at temperatures below their melting point. Even though molecules can form supercooled liquids by rapid cooling, crystalline organic materials readily undergo a phase transformation to an energetically favorable crystalline phase upon subsequent heat treatment. Opposite to this general observation, here, we report molecular design of thermally stable supercooled liquid of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) derivatives and their intrigu
Abstract Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) have gained great interest due to their unique tunable bandgap as a function of the number of layers. Especially, single-layer tungsten disulfides (WS 2 ) is a direct band gap semiconductor with a gap of 2.1 eV featuring strong photoluminescence and large exciton binding energy. Although synthesis of MoS 2 and their layer dependent properties have been studied rigorously, little attention has been paid to the formation of single
Designing and synthesizing the ordered light-harvesting systems, possessing complementary absorption and energy-transfer process between the chromophores, are essential steps to accomplish successful mimicking of the natural photosynthetic systems. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be considered as an ideal system to achieve this due to their highly ordered structure, superior synthetic versatility, and tailorable functionality. Herein, we have synthesized the new light-harvesting mixed-ligand
Monolayer (1L) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are two-dimensional direct-bandgap semiconductors with promising applications of quantum light emitters. Recent studies have shown that intrinsically low quantum yields (QYs) of 1L-TMDs can be greatly improved by chemical treatments. However, nonradiative exciton–exciton annihilation (EEA) appears to significantly limit light emission of 1L-TMDs at a nominal density of photoexcited excitons due to strong Coulomb interaction. Here we show tha
The extreme elastic strain of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides provides an ideal platform to achieve efficient exciton funneling via local strain modulation; however, studies conducted thus far have focused on the use of substrates with fixed strain profiles. We prepared 1L-WS2 on a flexible substrate such that the formation of topographic wrinkles could be switched on or off, and the depth or the direction of the wrinkle could be modified by external strain, thereby providi
Heterostacking of layered transition-metal dichalcogenide (LTMD) monolayers (1Ls) offers a convenient way of designing two-dimensional exciton systems. Here we demonstrate the simultaneous hosting of positive trions and negative trions in heterobilayers made by vertically stacking 1L MoSe2 and 1L MoS2. The charge transfer occurring between the 1Ls of MoSe2 and MoS2 converted the polarity of trions in 1L MoSe2 from negative to positive, resulting in the presence of positive trions in the 1L MoSe2
Alloying two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) is a promising avenue for band gap engineering. In addition, developing a scalable synthesis process is essential for the practical application of these alloys with tunable band gaps in optoelectronic devices. Here, we report the synthesis of optically uniform and scalable single-layer Mo1- xW xS2 alloys by a two-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method followed by a laser thinning process. MXene (Mn+1Xn) is an emerging class of layered two-dimensional (2D) materials, which are derived from their bulk-state MAX phase (Mn+1AXn, where M: early transition metal, A: group element 13 and 14, and X: carbon and/or nitrogen). MXenes have found wide-ranging applications in energy storage devices, sensors, catalysis, etc. owing to their high electronic conductivity and wide range o
Monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (1L-TMDs) are atomically thin direct band gap semiconductors, from which the emission of light is determined by optical transitions of exciton complexes such as neutral excitons and trions. While the quantum yields of 1L-TMDs are quite low, the ability to control the populations of exciton complexes in 1L-TMDs through various doping processes is an interesting advantage, and provides ample possibilities for engineering the optical properties of these se
Polycrystalline growth of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods is subject to the formation of grain boundaries (GBs), which have a large effect on the electrical and optical properties of MoS2-based optoelectronic devices. The identification of grains and GBs of CVD-grown monolayer MoS2 has traditionally required atomic resolution microscopy or nonlinear optical imaging techniques. Here, we present a simple spectroscopic method for visualizing GBs of polycrys
Plasmon coupling and propagation between metallic nanowires (NWs) and atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenide semiconductors are demonstrated using Ag NW/MoS2 hybrids. The high exciton–plasmon coupling efficiency with large throughput of MoS2 excitons allows quantitative assessment of plasmon waveguide performance. Monolayer MoS2 allows real-space visualization of the propagating plasmons along the NW via direct plasmon–exciton coupling. As a service to our authors and readers, this jour
