15Drug Rash with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) syndrome reflects a serious hypersensitivity reaction to drugs, characterized by skin rash, fever, lymph node enlargement, and internal organ involvement. So far, numerous drugs such as sulfonamides, phenobarbital, sulfasalazine, carbamazepine, and phenytoin have been reported to cause the DRESS syndrome. We report a case in a 29-yr-old female patient who had been on celecoxib and anti-tuberculosis drugs for one month to treat knee joint
BACKGROUND: Sorafenib currently sets the new standard for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It has been suggested that Asian patients with HCC have increased susceptibility to hand-foot skin reaction (HFSR) related to sorafenib therapy. The authors investigated the association between sorafenib-induced HFSR and genetic polymorphisms in Korean patients with HCC. METHODS: For this prospective cohort study, the authors enrolled 59 consecutive patients with intermediate stage HCC from 5 cente
PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the role of postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) in intracranial solitary fibrous tumor/hemangiopericytoma (SFT/HPC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 133 patients with histologically confirmed HPC were included from eight institutions. Gross total resection (GTR) and subtotal resection (STR) were performed in 86 and 47 patients, respectively. PORT was performed in 85 patients (64%). The prognostic effects of sex, age, performance, World Health Organization (W
Gliomas are the most common type of primary brain tumor in adults. Glioma treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach involving surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Multiple trials have been conducted to establish the appropriate choice of treatment to achieve long-term survival and better quality of life. This review provides up-to-date evidence regarding treatment strategies for gliomas.
BACKGROUND: To assess the clinical outcome of chemoradiotherapy with or without surgery for locally recurrent rectal cancer (LRRC) and to find useful and significant prognostic factors for a clinical situation. METHODS: Between January 2001 and February 2009, 67 LRRC patients, who entered into concurrent chemoradiotherapy with or without surgery, were reviewed retrospectively. Of the 67 patients, 45 were treated with chemoradiotherapy plus surgery, and the remaining 22 were treated with chemorad
PURPOSE: The current study was conducted in order to evaluate the clinical outcome of radical radiotherapy (RT) with or without chemotherapy for elderly patients with stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1990 and 2010, 125 patients, aged 70 years or more, received radical RT with or without chemotherapy for treatment of stage III NSCLC. We reviewed the patients' prognostic factors, including comorbidities. Comorbidity status was evaluated using a simplifie
PURPOSE: We aimed to refine the radiotherapy (RT) volume and dose for intracranial germinoma considering recurrences and long-term toxicities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Total 189 patients with intracranial germinoma were treated with RT alone (n=50) and RT with upfront chemotherapy (CRT) (n=139). All cases were confirmed histologically. RT fields comprised the extended-field and involved-field only for primary site. The extended-field, including craniospinal, whole brain (WB), and whole ventricle (
Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and aggressive form of human adult brain malignancy. The identification of the cell of origin harboring cancer-driver mutations is the fundamental issue for understanding the nature of GBM and developing the effective therapeutic target. It has been a long-term hypothesis that neural stem cells in the subventricular zone (SVZ) might be the origin-of-cells in human glioblastoma since they are known to have life-long proliferative activity and acquire somatic
BACKGROUND: Circumferential resection margin (CRM) and distal resection margin (DRM) have different impact on clinical outcomes after preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by surgery. Effect and adequate length of resection margin as well as impact of treatment response after preoperative CRT was evaluated. METHODS: Total of 403 patients with rectal cancer underwent preoperative CRT followed by total mesorectal excision between January 2004 and December 2010. After applying the criterion
There is correlation between inflammatory markers and MSI during CRT and it influences prognosis. Therefore, inflammatory markers might have a role in assessing the microenvironment related to MSI and the immunologic response in rectal cancer.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical outcomes of hypofractionated radiotherapy (HFRT) with three-dimensional conformal technique for medically inoperable patients with early stage non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and to evaluate prognostic factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 26 patients who underwent HFRT for early stage NSCLC between September 2005 and August 2011. Only clinical stage T1-3N0 was included. The median RT dose was 70 Gy
Introduction: The dosimetric factors of radiotherapy have an acute impact on the host immune system during chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, even after CRT, a substantial number of patients remain immunosuppressed with delayed lymphopenia. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate clinical and dose-volumetric predictors of delayed lymphopenia after CRT in locally advanced NSCLC. Materials and methods: We retrospectively reviewed 272 patients with loca
PURPOSE: We investigated the clinical effects and predictive factors of severe post-chemoradiotherapy pulmonary complications (PCPC) in locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (LA-NSCLC). Materials and Methods: Medical records of 317 patients who underwent definitive concurrent chemoradiation (CCRT) for LA-NSCLC were reviewed retrospectively. PCPC was defined as an event of admission or emergency department visit for acute or subacute pulmonary inflammatory complications, including pneumonit
