15While scholarship on “retrospective voting” has found that incumbent politicians can be punished for a range of events outside their control, the literature has paid scant attention to the role of political alignment between the different levels of government in disaster responses and its implications for voting decisions. We argue that retrospective voters punish only opposition incumbents (candidates in office but not aligned with the government leader), who have limited access to government r
As the need of software has been increasing, the danger of malicious attacks against software has been worse. In order to fortify software systems against adversaries, researchers have devoted significant efforts on mitigating software vulnerabilities. To eliminate security vulnerabilities from software with lower inspection effort, vulnerability prediction approaches have been emerged. By allocating human and time resource on the potentially vulnerable subset, development organization could eli
A piezoelectric-based energy harvesting and power management IC that can supply a total energy of 160-μJ at 2.5V from a single button-pressing action to realize a batteryless wireless remote switch (BWS) is presented. The IC uses a 6:1 series-parallel switched-capacitor converter and a bias-flipping inductor to match the impedance, down-convert the voltage, and maximize the total energy harvested from a 300-mm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/199
This study aims to reveal the status quo and future trend of thermoelectric water use and water stress in India. We compiled a bottom-up geo-database for all thermal power plants in India and identified the type of cooling technology used. We then estimated thermoelectric water withdrawal and water consumption in India from 2009 to 2018 and projected future trends in thermoelectric water use up to 2027 using the integrated power planning and dispatch model, SWITCH-India. Results show that thermo
Gasoline prices are often a heated topic during presidential election campaigns in the United States. Yet, presidents have limited control over gasoline prices. Do voters reward or punish the president for changes in gasoline prices? Why might voters blame the president for an outcome beyond direct presidential control? This study addresses these questions by testing the effects of gasoline prices on pocketbook retrospection by voters. To capture the personal economic burden of gasoline prices,
The optimal capacitive load condition is derived for a passive bridge rectifier to harvest the maximum amount of energy when a piezoelectric generator (PG) receives a single vibration pulse (e.g. a button press). When the PG is modelled as a current pulse generator with an internal shunt capacitance ( C P ), it is shown that an ideal bridge rectifier collects the maximum energy when its output capacitance is set to 3· C P . The impacts of the nonzero turn‐on voltage and on‐resistance of the diod
Regulated peak power tracking (RPPT) systems such as the series structure and the parallel structure are commonly used in satellite space power systems. However, this structure processes the solar array power or the battery power to the load through two regulators during one orbit cycle, which reduces the energy transfer efficiency. The series-parallel structure for the RPPT system can improve the power conversion efficiency, but an additional regulator increases the cost, size and weight of the
Summary Motivation The need to tax small firms for revenue generation alongside the aim of establishing a sustainable tax system for such firms that encourages economic growth has long been a challenge for lower‐middle income countries, especially those with large informal economies, such as Nigeria. This article explores the drivers of tax morale of small firms in lower‐middle income countries. Purpose This article investigates what determines the attitudes of small firms on their potential eva
Abstract Protectionist measures often have target countries, and public support for such measures depends on who the targets are. We identify such target effects on protectionist sentiments and examine the effects of information in tempering protectionist sentiments in East Asia. Using an original survey experiment in China, Japan, and South Korea, we test how providing information about the costs of protectionism changes public attitudes toward targeted protectionist measures. We found that pro
Abstract State policies shape firms’ incentives to lobby in the United States, but the existing lobbying literature mostly ignores these incentives. Using lobbying records for all electric utilities in the United States from 1998 to 2012, we examine how state policies affect federal lobbying by both proponents and opponents of federal support for the renewable energy policy. Our theory predicts that supportive state policies reduce the returns to lobbying by both proponents and opponents. Empiri
This paper aims to empirically investigate how South Korean newspapers define and report refugee issues. More specifically, we identify the prevalent topics and sentiments in the newspaper coverage of Yemeni refugees by using two machine learning techniques—structural topic model (STM) and Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT). The analyses show that the most prevalent topic covered in the newspapers is ‘Humanitarian residence permit’—whether the government should provid
Abstract Governments often reform financial policies, such as industrial subsidies taxes and currency exchange rates, during times of fiscal distress. Existing studies suggest that information campaigns can improve popular support for policy reforms that promise longer term macroeconomic growth but come with short‐term financial costs to people's livelihoods. This article assesses the effects of information campaigns on the acceptance of fossil fuel subsidy reforms in Nigeria, a type of fiscal r
