The effect of lumbar stabilization and walking exercises on chronic low back pain
Jee Hyun Suh, H. Kim, Gwang Pyo Jung, Jin Young Ko, Ju Seok Ryu
SJR Q3MedicineOA

BACKGROUND: Various exercises have been proposed to mitigate chronic low back pain (LBP). However, to date, no one particular exercise has been shown to be superior. Hence, the aim of this study was to compare the efficiency between 2 exercises: the individualized graded lumbar stabilization exercise (IGLSE) and walking exercise (WE). METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted in 48 participants with chronic LBP. After screening, participants were randomized to 1 of 4 groups: flexibili

Prediction of Laryngeal Aspiration Using Voice Analysis
Ju Seok Ryu, Seo Rin Park, Kyoung Hyo Choi
SJR Q1American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

Voice analysis is a safe, noninvasive, and reliable screening tool for patients with dysphagia and can detect patients at high risk of clinically significant aspiration, thereby augmenting clinical bedside examination.

Application and Interpretation of High-resolution Manometry for Pharyngeal Dysphagia

SJR Q1Journal of Neurogastroenterology and MotilityOA

The pharyngeal phase of swallowing is a complex event consisted with subsequent muscular contractions and pressure gen-eration to move a bolus from the mouth to the esophagus. Recently, high-resolution impedance manometry (HRIM) was devel-oped and used for the evaluation of pharyngeal dysphagia. Although HRIM provides precise pharyngeal pressure information, it has yet to be used as part of routine clinical practice for the assessment of dysphagia. The main reasons are thought to be that the tes

Factors Predictive of Spasticity and Their Effects on Motor Recovery and Functional Outcomes in Stroke Patients
Ju Seok Ryu, Jung Woo Lee, Sang Il Lee, Min Ho Chun
SJR Q1Topics in Stroke Rehabilitation

The prevalence of spasticity in stroke patients transferred to our Department of Rehabilitation Medicine was 42.4%. NIHSS scores, nonoperative treatment, and low Motricity Index scores were significantly predictive of spasticity. A nonspastic group showed greater functional improvement during rehabilitation.

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Abstract There have been many studies on adolescent idiopathic scoliosis related abnormal muscle contractions of the spine. However, previous studies using surface electromyography to investigate paraspinal muscle asymmetry are controversial, lacking in clarity of results, and hindered by methodological limitations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between imbalance factors including surface electromyography activity according to the scoliosis curve type and leg leng

Electromyographic Changes in Trunk Muscles During Graded Lumbar Stabilization Exercises
Chung Reen Kim, Dae Kwon Park, Seok Tae Lee, Ju Seok Ryu
SJR Q1PM&R

BACKGROUND: Lumbar stabilization exercises are effective for the treatment of patients with low back pain. However, personalized exercise programs are required to facilitate more efficient treatment, as each individual exhibits the different characteristics of the trunk muscles and pain. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of graded lumbar stabilization exercises on the trunk muscles in healthy individuals, using surface electromyography. DESIGN: A cross-sectional prospective study. SETTING: Out

Electromyographic activation patterns during swallowing in older adults
Jin Young Ko, H. Kim, Joonyoung Jang, Jun Chang Lee, Ju Seok Ryu
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Age-related weakness due to atrophy and fatty infiltration in oropharyngeal muscles may be related to dysphagia in older adults. However, little is known about changes in the oropharyngeal muscle activation pattern in older adults. This was a prospective and experimental study. Forty healthy participants (20 older [> 60 years] and 20 young [< 60 years] adults) were enrolled. Six channel surface electrodes were placed over the bilateral suprahyoid (SH), bilateral retrohyoid (RH), thyrohyoid (TH),

The Effects of Bolus Volume and Texture on Pharyngeal Pressure Events Using High-resolution Manometry and Its Comparison with Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study
Ju Seok Ryu, Donghwi Park, Yoongul Oh, Seok Tae Lee, Jin Young Kang
SJR Q1Journal of Neurogastroenterology and MotilityOA

The bolus volume was shown to have significant effect on pharyngeal pressure and timing, but the texture did not show any effect on pharyngeal swallowing. The parameters of HRM were more sensitive than those of kinematic analysis. As the parameters of HRM are based on precise anatomic structure and the kinematic analysis reflects the actions of multiple anatomic structures, HRM and VFSS should be used according to their purposes.

Symptom-Based Treatment of Neuropathic Pain in Spinal Cord-Injured Patients
Kyunghoon Min, Yoongul Oh, Sang‐Hyuk Lee, Ju Seok Ryu
SJR Q1American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

In summary, the phenotype of neuropathic pain was associated with the efficacy of different pharmacologic treatments. Symptom-based treatment, therefore, can lead to more efficient analgesia.
