SJR Q2Health Systems & ReformOA

In the first two months of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Republic of Korea (South Korea) had the second highest number of cases globally yet was able to dramatically lower the incidence of new cases and sustain a low mortality rate, making it a promising example of strong national response. We describe the main strategies undertaken and selected facilitators and challenges in order to identify transferable lessons for other countries working to control the spread and impact of COVID-19. Most countries have implemented restrictions on mobility to prevent the spread of Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19), entailing considerable societal costs but, at least initially, based on limited evidence of effectiveness. We asked whether mobility restrictions were associated with changes in the occurrence of COVID-19 in 34 OECD countries plus Singapore and Taiwan. Our data sources were the Google Global Mobility Data Source, which reports different types of mobility, and COVID-19 cases retrie

SJR Q1Global Health ActionOA

BACKGROUND: Stunting, a form of anthropometric failure, disproportionately affects children in developing countries with a higher burden on children living in poverty. How early life deprivation affects physical growth over various life stages is less well-known. OBJECTIVE: We investigate the short- and long-run associations between household wealth in early life with physical growth in childhood in four low- and middle-income countries to understand the persistent implications of early life con

Socioeconomic Inequalities in Adolescent Depression in South Korea: A Multilevel Analysis
Hye Yin Park, Jongho Heo, S. V. Subramanian, Ichiro Kawachi, Juhwan Oh
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

The adolescent depression experience is not only an individual phenomenon but is highly associated with other factors such as parents, peers, academic achievement, and even gender mix in the school. Thus, prevention measures on youth depression need to focus on emphasizing less pressure from parents on academic performance, and establishing healthy inter-gender relationships within co-education schools.

Precarious workers were more likely to be smokers and heavy smokers than standard workers. Unemployment is also a significant risk factor for decreased quitting and smoking relapse. However, insecure employment was an even more consistent determinant of current smoking behavior than unemployment.

Early sexual initiation and multiple sexual partners among Vietnamese women: analysis from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, 2011
Đinh Thái Sơn, Juhwan Oh, Jongho Heo, Nguyễn Văn Huy, Hoàng Văn Minh, Sugy Choi, Luu Ngoc Hoat
SJR Q1Global Health ActionOA

INTRODUCTION: Under current HIV transmission mechanisms operating in Vietnam, women are seen as victims of their male partners. Having multiple sexual partners is one of the well-known risk factors for HIV infection. However, little is known about women's risky sexual behaviour and their vulnerability to HIV in Vietnam. This study aims to explore association between early sexual initiation and the number of lifetime sexual partners in Vietnamese women. Although the Vietnamese culture is socially

Participation of the Lay Public in Decision-Making for Benefit Coverage of National Health Insurance in South Korea
Juhwan Oh, Young Jun Ko, Allison Baer Alley, Soonman Kwon
SJR Q2Health Systems & ReformOA

-Although South Korea successfully established national health insurance (NHI) in 1977, and has maintained universal coverage since 1989, it has long been criticized for insufficient benefit coverage. Korea has been under public pressure to increase its NHI benefit coverage, while also facing controversies over the appropriateness of items that were newly added to the benefit package. Pressured by the controversies and difficulties regarding national policy decisions on the benefits package, the

Use of high-level health facilities and catastrophic expenditure in Vietnam: can health insurance moderate this relationship?
Hwa‐Young Lee, Juhwan Oh, Van Minh Hoang, J. Robin Moon, S. V. Subramanian
SJR Q1BMC Health Services ResearchOA

BACKGROUND: Overcrowding of high-level health facilities is a major concern in a Vietnamese health system. This may increase an economic burden to the households since health insurance is still insufficient in providing financial risk protection. This paper sought to examine the association between the use of high-level health facilities and household-level expenditure status such as out-of-pocket (OOP), and catastrophic expenditure on health, as well as a moderating effect of health insurances

Hwa‐Young Lee, Hannah H. Leslie, Juhwan Oh, Rockli Kim, Alok Kumar, S. V. Subramanian, Margaret E. Kruk
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Over 600,000 newborns in India died in their first month of life in 2017 despite large increases in access to maternal health services. We assess whether maternal and newborn health system quality in India is adequate for institutional delivery to reduce neonatal mortality. We identified recent births from the cross-sectional 2015-2016 National Family Health Survey and used reported content of antenatal care and immediate postpartum care averaged at the district level to characterize health syst

Lan Vu, Juhwan Oh, Quyen Thi-Tu Bui, Lê Thị Kim Ánh
SJR Q1Global Health ActionOA

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of modern contraceptive use is an important indicator that reflects accessibility to reproductive health services. Satisfying unmet needs for family planning alone could reduce the number of maternal deaths by almost a third. This study uses multiple data sources to examine multilevel factors associated with the use of modern contraceptives among married women in Vietnam aged 15-49 years. DESIGN: Data from different national surveys (Vietnam Population and Housing Cens

SJR Q1Global Health ActionOA

BACKGROUND: Understanding factors associated with domestic violence-supportive attitudes among Vietnamese women is important for designing effective policies to prevent this behavior. Previous studies have largely overlooked risk factors associated with domestic violence-supportive attitudes by women in Vietnam. OBJECTIVE: This paper explores and identifies socioeconomic factors that contribute to domestic violence-supportive attitudes among Vietnamese women using data from the Multiple Indicato
