15Although conferring favorable prognosis in early stage, SRC has worse prognostic impact as disease progresses. The longstanding controversy of SRC on prognosis may result from disease status at presentation, which leads to differing prognosis compared with tubular adenocarinoma.
BACKGROUND: In colorectal cancer (CRC), DNA methylation anomalies define distinct subgroups termed CpG island methylator phenotype 1 (CIMP1), CIMP2, and CIMP-negative. The role of this classification in predicting recurrence and disease-free survival (DFS) in resected stage III CRC was evaluated. METHODS: Sporadic cancers from 161 patients were analyzed. Bisulfite pyrosequencing was used to examine the methylation of 2 global DNA methylation markers (LINE-1, Alu) and 9 loci (MINT1, MINT2, MINT31
Background & Aims Fusobacterium nucleatum (FN) plays a pivotal role in the development and progression of colorectal cancer by modulating antitumor immune responses. However, the impact of FN on immune regulation in the tumor microenvironment has not been fully elucidated. Methods The abundance of FN was measured in 99 stage III CRC tumor tissues using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Gene expression profiles were assessed and annotated using consensus molecular subtypes (CMS), Ge
Diagnosing Behcet’s disease (BD) is challenging because of the lack of a diagnostic biomarker. The purposes of this study were to investigate distinctive metabolic changes in urine samples of BD patients and to identify urinary metabolic biomarkers for diagnosis of BD using gas chromatography/time-of-flight–mass spectrometry (GC/TOF−MS). Metabolomic profiling of urine samples from 44 BD patients and 41 healthy controls (HC) were assessed using GC/TOF−MS, in conjunction with multivariate statisti
This is the first phase II study of S-1 monotherapy for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer after failure of both irinotecan- and oxaliplatin-containing regimens. The initial dose of S-1 was 35 mg m-2, administered twice daily for 14 days every 3 weeks. Treatment was repeated until the occurrence of disease progression. Twenty-eight patients were enrolled. S-1 was administered to 21 patients as third-line therapy and to the remaining seven patients as fourth-line therapy. Of 26 evaluable
Bone metastasis is known as a poor prognostic factor in colorectal cancer (CRC), but its clinical manifestations and outcomes are uncertain. CRC with bone metastasis was searched from January 2006 to April 2016. Of 11,551 CRC patients, 321 (2.7%) patients had bone metastasis. Bone-only metastasis was found in only 8.7% of patients. Synchronous bone metastasis was present in 147 (45.8%) patients. In patients with metachronous bone metastasis, the median time from CRC diagnosis to bone metastasis
In patients with resectable CRLMs, perioperative chemotherapy had no effect on PFS, but improved OS. Patients with high CEA levels or over 2 liver metastases may benefit from perioperative chemotherapy.
BACKGROUND: The objectives of this study were to evaluate long-term results of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin and the potential benefit of consolidation chemotherapy in patients with anal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC). METHODS: Between January 1995 and February 2006, 31 patients with ASCC were treated with CRT. Radiotherapy was administered at 45 Gy over 5 weeks, followed by a boost of 9 Gy to complete or partial responders. Chemotherapy consisted of 5-fluo
Abstract Background Preoperative chemoradiotherapy (PCRT) followed by surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy is the current standard treatment for stage II/III rectal cancer. However, radiotherapy in the pelvic area is commonly associated with complications such as anastomotic leakage, sexual dysfunction, and fecal incontinence. Recently, the MERCURY study showed that preoperative high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) helped to selectively avoid PCRT. It remains unclear whether PCRT is nec
