The Role of an Amygdalo-Nigrostriatal Pathway in Associative Learning
Jung‐Soo Han, Robert W. McMahan, Peter C. Holland, Michela Gallagher
SJR Q1Journal of NeuroscienceOA

The present study examined the role of an amygdalo-nigrostriatal pathway in associative learning. An asymmetrical lesion model was used to test whether a circuit from the amygdala central nucleus to the dorsolateral striatum, via the substantia nigra, is critical for mediating conditioned orienting responses. Rats with an asymmetrical lesion, consisting of neurotoxic removal of central nucleus neurons in one hemisphere and depletion of the dopamine innervation of the dorsolateral striatum in the

Antioxidant and antiinflammatory activities of xanthorrhizol in hippocampal neurons and primary cultured microglia

SJR Q2Journal of Neuroscience Research

Xanthorrhizol, a natural sesquiterpenoid isolated from the rhizome of Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb (Zingiberaceae), has antibacterial activities and protective effects against cisplatin-induced hepatotoxicity. In this study, we investigated the activities of xanthorrhizol as an antioxidant or antiinflammatory agent using neuronal and microglial cells. Xanthorrhizol had potent neuroprotective effects on glutamate-induced neurotoxicity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in the murine hippoc

Hippocampal lesions disrupt decrements but not increments in conditioned stimulus processing
Jung‐Soo Han, Michela Gallagher, Peter C. Holland
SJR Q1Journal of NeuroscienceOA

Studies recording hippocampal neural activity show widespread registration of events during associative learning. Recent computational models of hippocampal function have stressed its role in attentional processes specified by well-developed modern theories of associative learning. These modeling efforts are largely aimed at accounting for the behavioral outcomes of damage to the hippocampal system in terms of underlying changes in information processing. Two experiments examined the effects of

Interaction of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons with the glucocorticoid system in stress regulation and cognitive impairment
Saswati Paul, Won Kyung Jeon, Jennifer L. Bizon, Jung‐Soo Han
SJR Q1Frontiers in Aging NeuroscienceOA

A substantial number of studies on basal forebrain (BF) cholinergic neurons (BFCN) have provided compelling evidence for their role in the etiology of stress, cognitive aging, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and other neurodegenerative diseases. BFCN project to a broad range of cortical sites and limbic structures, including the hippocampus, and are involved in stress and cognition. In particular, the hippocampus, the primary target tissue of the glucocorticoid stress hormones, is associated with cogn

Disconnection of the amygdala central nucleus and substantia innominata/nucleus basalis disrupts increments in conditioned stimulus processing in rats.
Jung‐Soo Han, Peter C. Holland, Michela Gallagher
SJR Q2Behavioral Neuroscience

Rats with a neurotoxic lesion of the amygdala central nucleus (CN) in one hemisphere and a 192 immunoglobulin G (192IgG)-saporin lesion of cholinergic neurons in the contralateral substantia innominata/nucleus basalis (SI/nBM) failed to show the enhanced attentional processing of a conditioned stimulus (CS) observed in sham-operated rats when that CS's predictive value was altered. Performance of these asymmetrically lesioned rats was poorer than that of rats with a unilateral lesion of either s

Chronic brain inflammation causes a reduction in GluN2A and GluN2B subunits of NMDA receptors and an increase in the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases in the hippocampus
Jinhua Ma, Bo‐Ryoung Choi, ChiHye Chung, Sun Seek Min, Won Kyung Jeon, Jung‐Soo Han
SJR Q2Molecular BrainOA

Neuroinflammation plays a key role in the initiation and progression of neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Chronic neuroinflammation results in diminished synaptic plasticity and loss of GluN1 N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in the hippocampus, leading to the cognitive deficits that are the most common symptoms of AD. Therefore, it is suggested that chronic inflammation may alter expression levels of GluN2A and GluN2B subunits of NMDA receptors and associated intracellular sign

Hippocampal lesions enhance configural learning by reducing proactive interference
Jung‐Soo Han, Michela Gallagher, Peter C. Holland
SJR Q1Hippocampus

Rats were trained on an operant conditional discrimination in which an ambiguous stimulus (X) indicated both the occasions on which responding in the presence of a second cue (A) would be reinforced and the occasions on which responding in the presence of a third cue (B) would not be reinforced (X --> A+, A-, X --> B-, B+). Both rats with neurotoxic lesions of the hippocampus and control rats learned this discrimination more rapidly when the training trials were widely spaced (mean intertrial in

Decreased glucocorticoid receptor mRNA and dysfunction of HPA axis in rats after removal of the cholinergic innervation to hippocampus.
Jung‐Soo Han, Jennifer L. Bizon, Hyun‐Ja Chun, Courtney E. Maus, Michela Gallagher
SJR Q2European Journal of NeuroscienceOA

Excess exposure to glucocorticoids can have deleterious effects on physiology and cognition. Glucocorticoids acting via receptors located in hippocampal neurons contribute to negative feedback after stress by terminating the further release of glucocorticoids. The current study investigated the effects of selective immunolesions of septo-hippocampal cholinergic neurons on hippocampal corticosterone receptor mRNA and on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) activity. As evaluated by in situ hybrid

CT-Based Geometric Data of Human Spine Musculature. Part I. Japanese Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain
Jung‐Soo Han, J. Y. Ahn, V.K. Goel, Renichi TAKEUCHI, Dennis McGowan
Journal of Spinal Disorders

Mechanical factors are considered to play a dominant role in low back problems. Various spinal structures, including muscles, act in unison to resist the external load, including the body segments. An estimation of the forces in these requires a knowledge of the orientation, location, and area of cross-section of the muscles to complete the information for the formulation of a truly three-dimensional biomechanical mathematical model of the spine in the lumbar region. Computed tomography scans of
