15OBJECTIVE: Recombinant human growth/differentiation factor-5 (rhGDF-5) is being evaluated as a candidate therapy in support of periodontal regeneration. The objective of this study was to evaluate periodontal wound healing/regeneration following the application of rhGDF-5 on a particulate beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) carrier using an established defect model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bilateral 4 x 5 mm (width x depth), one-wall, critical-size, intrabony periodontal defects were surgically
BACKGROUNDS: Clinical benefits in bone grafting of intact extraction socket have been widely known, but limited evidence is available for the procedure in damaged extraction sockets due to periodontal disease. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the dimensional alteration of alveolar ridge following bone grafting of damaged extraction sockets, and compare the outcomes of using deproteinized bovine (DBBM) versus porcine bone mineral (DPBM) in the damaged sockets. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hun
BACKGROUND: Deproteinized porcine bone mineral (DPBM) was recently developed and commercially available in maxillary sinus grafting, in which demineralized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) was widely used. OBJECTIVES: The present randomized controlled clinical trial aimed to compare histological bone quality and radiographic volume stability in maxillary sinuses grafted with DPBM and DBBM. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty sinuses in 16 participants were enrolled and randomly allocated to control and test
OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the dimensional ridge alteration in a buccal-bone-deficient extraction socket, and ridge regeneration following socket grafting accompanied by recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2) or a collagen membrane covering. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In five beagle dogs, entire buccal bone of the extracted sockets of premolars was surgically removed and immediately grafted using one of the following graft protocols: (1) sham surgery without any grafting, and
This study aimed to compare the accuracy and reliability of digital versus conventional clinical measurements of the width of keratinized tissue. To this end, the keratinized tissue width was measured at 110 tooth sites in 5 pig jaws. The measurements were made at each site using three-dimensional (3D) scanned images and a periodontal probe. The actual keratinized tissue width was subsequently measured on histologic slides prepared from the same sites, and differences between the histologic slid
OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to analyze retrospectively the long-term survival and success rates of Narrow implants (NIs) placed with various implant systems, and the association with biological and technical complications. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In total, 338 patients (men = 45.6%, women = 54.4%) who received 541 NIs (≤3.5 mm in diameter) for fixed prostheses were enrolled in this retrospective study. The mean marginal bone level (MMBL) change was calculated. Life table analysis
OBJECTIVES: This study histologically analyzed biopsy samples obtained from sites of damaged extraction socket grafting using deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) or deproteinized porcine bone mineral (DPBM) with coverage by a collagen membrane. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred patients participated in this randomized controlled clinical trial of extraction socket grafts performed in cases of periodontally compromised teeth. All participants were blinded to their group allocations, and each
BACKGROUND: Clinical benefits of local antibiotics as an adjunct to nonsurgical treatment of peri-implantitis have been widely reported, but most studies evaluated incipient peri-implantitis lesions, and showed incomplete treatment success rates. PURPOSE: To assess the clinical and microbiological outcomes of administering metronidazole in combination with minocycline as a local adjunct to the nonsurgical treatment of peri-implantitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and eighteen subjects wit
In the limitation of this study, customized n-HA block could provide a space for periodontal tissue engineering, with minimal inflammation.
BACKGROUND: Implant dentistry is progressing based on extensive scientific results including preclinical and clinical studies. Researchers and clinicians have focused on implant designs and surface characteristics, which has resulted in various features being developed and introduced for enhancing osseointegration and reducing complications. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the cumulative survival rates of Straumann tissue-level dental implants over a 10-year period and identi
OBJECTIVE: To determine the positional accuracy of implants placed with a three-dimensionally printed template having nonmetal sleeves and to determine the contributing factors to observed deviations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and eighty-seven implants placed in 72 patients were analyzed. Presurgical intraoral scans and cone-beam computed tomography images obtained before and after surgery were superimposed, and vertical, angular, platform, and apex deviations were measured between the
