15BACKGROUND: The ICAP framework based on cognitive science posits four modes of cognitive engagement: Interactive, Constructive, Active, and Passive. Focusing on the wide applicability of discussion as interactive engagement in medical education, we investigated the effect of discussion when it was preceded by self-study and further investigated the effect of generating questions before discussions. METHODS: This study was conducted in the second semester of 2018 and was participated in by 129 st
BACKGROUND: COVID-19 caused significant confusion around the world, and dental education was no exception. Therefore, in line with the demands of the times, this study sought to determine the applicability of online active learning to dental education. METHODS: This study was conducted in the second semester of 2020 at a school of dentistry in a selective university in Korea. A total of 114 dental students were recruited. Participants were assigned to four different groups (lecture and discussio
BACKGROUND: Enhancing medical students' practice of patient-centered care is a goal of medical schools. In addition to exploring the demographic and academic factors of the students, it is necessary to identify other attitudes and perceptions that may influence the student's patient-centered attitude and inclination toward communication skill learning. This study aimed to assess patient-centered attitudes among dental students in Korea and identify the association between the students' character
The purpose of this study was to examine what cognitive and non-cognitive factors were responsible for predicting the academic performance of dental students in a dental school in the Republic of Korea. This school is one of those in Korea that now require applicants to have a bachelor's degree. In terms of cognitive factors, students' undergraduate grade point average (GPA) and Dental Education Eligibility Test (DEET) scores were used, while surveys were conducted to evaluate four non-cognitive
This study offered insights into how to design a flipped learning course in terms of predental students' preference and their learning readiness. Although learning success in a flipped classroom depends on the students' self-perceived level of preparedness, much still remains to be achieved in order to apply social media benefits in a flipped learning context.
The structure of the reconstructed Si(100) surface is studied using the tight-binding energy minimization method combined with a renormalization-group calculation. (2×1), c(2×2), p(2×2), (4×1), c(4×2), and p(4×2) structures are studied and compared. They are classified into two groups which are separated by a large activation barrier. In one group, (2×1), p(2×2), and c(4×2) structures are almost degenerate in energy, which can result in diffuse (2×1) LEED patterns. In the other group, a second-o
BACKGROUND: Writing is a useful learning activity that promotes higher-order thinking, but there are limited studies that prove its effectiveness. In previous research, researchers tested the effect of summary writing on students' comprehension and found no significant difference from that of re-studying texts. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to expand previous findings and investigate the effect of two types of writing tasks on medical students' academic performance, specifically in th
This study aimed to investigate the effect of interdental brushes and dental floss on the prevention of periodontitis in participants with ≥ 20 or < 20 remaining teeth by using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016-2018. Data from 11,614 participants were analysed using multivariate logistic regression after adjusting for sociodemographic factors (age and sex), socioeconomic factors (level of education and individual income), oral health-related variables (daily toothbr
The value of dental students' self-assessment is often debated. The aim of this study was to explore whether reflective learning with feedback enabled dental students to more accurately assess their self-perceived levels of preparedness on dental competencies. Over 16 weeks, all third- and fourth-year students at a dental school in the Republic of Korea took part in clinical rotations that incorporated reflective learning and feedback. Following this educational intervention, they were asked to
Toyozawa's exciton self-trapping model for the Urbach tail is analyzed using scaling arguments. Following Halperin's analysis of the random impurity potential problem, we show that for the one-dimensional lattice the logarithm of the absorption coefficient scales as ${T}^{\ensuremath{-}\frac{2}{3}}$ or ${E}^{\frac{3}{2}}$. For the two- or three-dimensional lattice, spontaneous localization of excitons over a finite number of atomic sites with Gaussian potential fluctuations leads to Urbach behav
The aim of this study was to assess whether clinical reasoning and factual knowledge questions used in team-based learning (TBL) enhanced dental students' performance in esthetic dentistry. Ninety-seven third-year dental students enrolled in esthetic dentistry in a dental school in Korea in 2018 were assigned to 16 teams consisting of five or six students each. A four-step TBL sequence (pre-study, readiness assurance test, appeal/feedback, and final test) was designed to examine how clinical rea
Motor learning is often hindered or facilitated by visual information from one's body and its movement. However, it is unclear whether visual representation of the body itself facilitates motor learning. Thus, we tested the effects of virtual body-representation on motor learning through a virtual reality rotary pursuit task. In the task, visual feedback on participants' movements was identical, but virtual body-representation differed by dividing the experimental conditions into three condition
After performing an analysis of the anomalous concentration and temperature dependence of absorption tails in GexSe1-x and AsxSe1-x systems, the author proposes that these glasses retain locally layered structures at particular stoichiometries corresponding to GeSe2 and As2Se3, and that a reversible structural change is taking place well below the glass transition temperature. A phenomenological model of layer buckling is presented to explain the slope of the exponential tail in the optical abso
