Behavioral Hearing Thresholds Between 0.125 and 20 kHz Using Depth-Compensated Ear Simulator Calibration
Jungmee Lee, Sumitrajit Dhar, Rebekah Abel, Renee Banakis, Evan Grolley, Jungwha Lee, Steven G. Zecker, Jonathan H. Siegel
SJR Q1Ear and HearingOA

The depth-compensated ear simulator-based calibration method and the modified Békésy technique allow reliable measurement of hearing thresholds over the entire frequency range of human hearing. Hearing thresholds at the extended high frequencies are sensitive to aging and reveal subtle differences, which are not evident in the frequency range evaluated regularly (≤8 kHz). Previously reported gender-related differences in hearing thresholds may be related to ear-canal acoustics and the calibratio

Amplitude modulation depth discrimination of a sinusoidal carrier: Effect of stimulus duration
Jungmee Lee, Sid P. Bacon
SJR Q1The Journal of the Acoustical Society of AmericaOA

Discrimination of the change in depth of sinusoidal amplitude modulation (AM) was investigated as a function of stimulus duration. The carrier frequency was 4000 Hz, the standard modulation depth (m) was either 0.1, 0.18, or 0.3, and the modulation rate was either 10, 20, 40, or 80 Hz. For all standard depths and modulation rates, threshold (delta m) decreased by more than a factor o two as stimulus duration doubled from the shortest duration used up to a certain duration (critical duration), be

The Korean evidential -te: A modal analysis
Jungmee Lee

Evidentiality is a linguistic category that specifies the source of information conveyed in an utterance (Aikhenvald and Dixon 2003), such as direct observation, inference, or hearsay. According to Aikhenvald’s (2004) cross-linguistic study of over 500 languages, a typologically common pattern is to specify distinct sources of information with distinct morphemes, such as Quechua’s three evidentials: –mi (for direct observation), –cha (for inferential evidence), and –si (for hearsay evidence). Evidentiality and its Interaction with Tense: Evidence from Korean
Jungmee Lee
OhioLink ETD Center (Ohio Library and Information Network)OA

Evidentiality is a linguistic category that specifies the source of information conveyed, such as direct observation, inference, or hearsay (Aikhenvald 2004). Through a detailed study of three distinct evidential readings that arise from the Korean evidentials –te and –ney, this dissertation studies the close interaction between evidentiality and other semantic categories, particularly temporality and modality. The goal of the dissertation is to develop a formal analysis which adequately capture

Temporal Interpretation without Tense: Korean and Japanese Coordination Constructions
Jungmee Lee, Judith Tonhauser
SJR Q1Journal of Semantics

Matrix clauses are tensed in Korean and Japanese, but both languages have coordination constructions where any non-final conjunct may or, in the case of Japanese, must be untensed. Building on analyses of the temporal interpretation of tenseless languages such as Yucatec Maya (Mayan: Bohnemeyer 2002) and Kalaallisut (Eskimo-Aleut: Bittner 2005), this article argues that a truly tenseless analysis of the temporal interpretation of these non-final conjuncts is possible once the effects of Aktionsa

Psychophysical suppression as a function of signal frequency: Noise and tonal maskers
Jungmee Lee, Sid P. Bacon
SJR Q1The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America

Physiological studies have suggested that the basal region of the cochlea is more nonlinear than the apical region. To evaluate this possibility psychophysically, suppression was investigated across signal frequency (250, 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz) in a forward-masking paradigm using both noise and tonal maskers/suppressors. Masker duration was 200 ms, signal duration was 20 or 40 ms, and signal delay was 0 or 20 ms; the longer delay was necessary to eliminate potential confusion effects obse

Individual Differences in Behavioural Decision Weights Related to Irregularities in Cochlear Mechanics
Jungmee Lee, Inseok Heo, An-Chieh Chang, Kristen Bond, Christophe N. J. Stoelinga, Robert A. Lutfi, Glenis R. Long
SJR Q3Advances in experimental medicine and biologyOA

An unexpected finding of previous psychophysical studies is that listeners show highly replicable, individualistic patterns of decision weights on frequencies affecting their performance in spectral discrimination tasks--what has been referred to as individual listening styles. We, like many other researchers, have attributed these listening styles to peculiarities in how listeners attend to sounds, but we now believe they partially reflect irregularities in cochlear micromechanics modifying wha

Psychophysical suppression as a function of signal frequency
Jungmee Lee, Sid P. Bacon
SJR Q1The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America

Psychophysical suppression was investigated across signal frequency (250, 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz) in a forward-masking paradigm. Masker duration was 200 ms, signal duration was 20 or 40 ms, and signal delay was 0 or 20 ms. When using a noise masker (spectrum level of 40 dB), the amount of suppression was determined by subtracting threshold in the presence of a broadband masker from that in the presence of a critical band masker. When using a tonal masker (masker level of 50 dB SPL, suppres

Can cochlear mechanics contribute to amplitude modulation perception?
Jungmee Lee, Sumitrajit Dhar
SJR Q1The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America

Amplitude modulation (AM) detection has been successfully used as a psychophysical measure of auditory temporal processing. Our understanding of the role of the auditory periphery in processing AM signals is emerging through physiological and psychophysical studies. Unfortunately, direct physiological estimates of the cochlea’s mechanical response to AM signals are not obtainable in humans. This study tries to fill this critical gap in knowledge by exploring the relationship between perception (

Temporal integration functions of AM detection and AM depth discrimination
Jungmee Lee, Glenis R. Long, Changmo Jeung
SJR Q1The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America

Previous studies (Lee, 1994; Lee and Bacon, 1997) suggested that both AM rate and AM depth discrimination were influenced by the number of AM cycles, instead of by the duration of stimulus. AM detection and AM depth discrimination were measured as a function of the number of AM cycles for the modulation rates of 10, 20, 40, 80, 125, 160, and 320 Hz. The carrier was a broadband noise (10 kHz low pass), and the carrier was either gated with the modulator (gated carrier) or presented 250 ms earlier

The scope ambiguity in the Korean Left-Node Raising construction
Jungmee Lee
SJR Q2Linguistic ResearchOA

This paper examines the ambiguity that arises from the Left-Node Raising (LNR) construction in Korean. I argue that the ambiguity is induced by the scopal relation between a coordinate phrase and a quantifier-type pivot: the quantificational meaning of a pivot can scope over the coordinate phrase, or it can take a narrow scope within each conjunct. I show that previous proposals such as the ATB-scrambling analysis (Nakao 2010) and the multi-dominance analysis (Chung 2010) have not addressed the
