15The antibacterial effect of silver nanoparticles has resulted in their extensive application in health, electronic, and home products. Thus, the exposed population continues to increase as the applications expand. Although previous studies on silver dust, fumes, and silver compounds have revealed some insights, little is yet known about the toxicity of nano-sized silver particles, where the size and surface area are recognized as important determinants for toxicity. Thus, the inhalation toxicity
The genetic landscape of medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is not yet fully understood, although some oncogenic mutations have been identified. To explore genetic profiles of MTCs, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumor tissues from MTC patients were assayed on the Ion AmpliSeq Cancer Panel v2. Eighty-four sporadic MTC samples and 36 paired normal thyroid tissues were successfully sequenced. We discovered 101 hotspot mutations in 18 genes in the 84 MTC tissue samples. The most common mutation was
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the associations between heavy metal exposure and serum ferritin levels, physical measurements and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Changwon, the location of this study, is a Korean representative industrial city. Data were obtained from medical check-ups between 2002 and 2018. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 34 814 male subjects were included. Of them, 1035 subjects with lead exposure, 200 subjects with cadmium exposure and the 33
Respiratory tract dosimetry is a useful tool to estimate the exposure concentrations of an inhaled substance that will produce the same result at a target site of the respiratory tract in both rats and humans. Thus, to enable the results of animal inhalation studies to be extrapolated to human equivalent exposure levels, the MPPD (multi-path particle dosimetry) model was used to estimate the differences in the respiratory dosimetry of rats and humans. In our previous study, when animals were sub
The use of silver nanoparticles is rapidly growing in various industries. However, exposure to nano-sized silver particles generated during production, use, and disposal in ambient air or the workplace remains an important concern for public and occupational health. There are currently no specific methods for measuring the inhalation toxicity of nanoparticles or specific nanoparticle generation methods. In a previous study, silver nanoparticles were generated using a small ceramic heater with a
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has one of the highest mortality rates among solid cancers. Late diagnosis and a lack of efficacious treatment options contribute to the dismal prognosis of HCC. Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-based immunotherapy has presented a new milestone in the treatment of cancer. Immunotherapy has yielded remarkable treatment responses in a range of cancer types including HCC. Based on the therapeutic effect of ICI alone (programmed cell death (PD)-1/programmed death-liga
Silver has been known to show antibacterial activity. Recently, silver nanoparticles have been become widely used in diverse applications. In a previous work by the authors, a small nanoparticle generator that uses a ceramic heater with a local heating area was developed. The performance of the device was evaluated in terms of the silver nanoparticles it generated. In the present article, a feasibility study regarding the inactivation of bacteria bioaerosols by the developed small silver nanopar
Advanced biliary tract cancer with good performance status showed modest survival without any treatment. Furthermore, subgroup analysis showed that patients with normal carbohydrate antigen 19-9 or carcinoembryonic antigen level or locally advanced status had favorable survival. Further studies comparing the outcome of chemotherapy with that of best supportive care in patients with unresectable biliary tract cancer are warranted.
Release of nanomaterials was assessed in a cleanroom workplace designed for the handling of multi-walled carbon nanotubes. During the process, the nanotubes were sprayed in a chamber fitted with an exhaust duct system. The front door of the spraying chamber was completely closed, but rear end of the chamber was partially open. Throughout a series of spray processes, three detectors - an optical particle counter, a nanoparticle aerosol monitor, and an aethalometer - counted and characterized part
