Clinical Implications of Pneumococcal Serotypes: Invasive Disease Potential, Clinical Presentations, and Antibiotic Resistance
Joon Young Song, Moon H. Nahm, M. Allen Moseley
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Streptococcus pneumoniae can asymptomatically colonize the nasopharynx and cause a diverse range of illnesses. This clinical spectrum from colonization to invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) appears to depend on the pneumococcal capsular serotype rather than the genetic background. According to a literature review, serotypes 1, 4, 5, 7F, 8, 12F, 14, 18C, and 19A are more likely to cause IPD. Although serotypes 1 and 19A are the predominant causes of invasive pneumococcal pneumonia, serotype 14 r

Diagnosis of Pneumococcal Pneumonia: Current Pitfalls and the Way Forward
Joon Young Song, Byung Wook Eun, Moon H. Nahm
SJR Q2Infection and ChemotherapyOA

Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common cause of community-acquired pneumonia. However, it can also asymptomatically colonize the upper respiratory tract. Because of the need to distinguish between S. pneumoniae that is simply colonizing the upper respiratory tract and S. pneumoniae that is causing pneumonia, accurate diagnosis of pneumococcal pneumonia is a challenging issue that still needs to be solved. Sputum Gram stains and culture are the first diagnostic step for identifying pneumococ

SJR Q1Journal of Antimicrobial ChemotherapyOA

OBJECTIVES: To determine the in vitro activities and interactions of imipenem, colistin and tigecycline with old antibacterial agents against carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii. METHODS: Forty-three carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii isolates from the intensive care unit of a university hospital were collected and their MICs of imipenem, colistin and tigecycline were determined. With eight randomly selected carbapenem-resistant isolates, an in vitro time-kill study was performed for the

SJR Q1International Journal of Infectious DiseasesOA

Kikuchi's disease took a self-limiting clinical course in most cases, but the recurrence rate found in the present study was higher than that of previous reports. Kikuchi's disease might be a phenotype of diverse disease entities. The prognosis is different according to the underlying cause. The FANA test would be useful in predicting recurrence.

SJR Q1BMC Infectious DiseasesOA

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing popularity of acupuncture, the importance of infection control is not adequately emphasized in Oriental medicine. In December 2001, an Oriental medical doctor in Seoul, South Korea, encountered several patients with persistent, culture-negative skin lesions on the trunk and extremities at the sites of prior acupuncture treatment. We identified and investigated an outbreak of Mycobacterium abscessus cutaneous infection among the patients who attended this Orient

Effects of influenza immunization on pneumonia in the elderly

SJR Q2Human Vaccines & ImmunotherapeuticsOA

Influenza virus is a common pathogen implicated in respiratory tract infections, annually affecting up to 20% of the general population, and pneumonia is a leading cause of death after influenza infection. Post-influenza pneumonia is especially common in the elderly and chronically ill patients. The risk of post-influenza pneumonia is significantly increased according to the number of concurrent comorbidities. Vaccination is the primary measure used to abate influenza epidemics and associated co

SJR Q1Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology

OBJECTIVE: To identify the factors that inhibit or motivate influenza vaccination among healthcare workers (HCWs). METHODS: In March 2000, we prepared 34-item questionnaire for both vaccine recipients and nonrecipients regarding demographic characteristics, factors motivating and inhibiting vaccination, and knowledge and attitudes about influenza vaccination. On the basis of the results of our survey, an aggressive hospital vaccination campaign was undertaken. In April 2004, after the 4-year cam
