15OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to evaluate the changes in intraocular pressure (IOP), pupil diameter (PD), and anterior segment parameters using ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) after instillation of preservative-free (PF) tafluprost in normal dogs. PROCEDURES: Six beagle dogs were used. PF tafluprost was instilled in one randomly selected eye, and PF artificial tear was instilled in the other eye (control). IOP and PD were measured every 15 min for the first hour, every 2 h for the next 17 h,
We evaluated the applicability of a rebound tonometer (TonoVet) in pigeon eyes and established normal reference intraocular pressure (IOP) values in healthy pigeons; 20 eyes of euthanized pigeons were used for calibration of the TonoVet and 48 eyes of 24 adult pigeons were used for measurement of reference IOP. First, IOP of pigeon eyes ex vivo were measured using the 'd' and the 'p' modes of the TonoVet and compared to manometric IOP values from 5 to 80 mm Hg. Then, to establish normal referenc
Sub-Tenon injection of lidocaine was an effective method for inducing akinesia of extraocular muscles, mydriasis, and intraoperative analgesia for phacoemulsification in dogs. Therefore, this could be another option for surgical field exposure and pain management during phacoemulsification in dogs.
BACKGROUND: Interest in meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is growing in veterinary medicine. However, research on MGD in dogs is lacking. The aims of this study were to compare the interferometry grades, tear meniscus height (TMH) and non-invasive tear break-up time (NIBUT) grades between dogs with and without MGD. METHODS: Routine ophthalmic examination, interferometry, NIBUT assessment, TMH measurement and meibography were performed. Age and Schirmer tear test-1 (STT-1) results were compared b
Abstract Objective To evaluate the clinical relevance of intraocular pressure (IOP) measured with three different rebound tonometers in an ex vivo analysis and clinical trials in dogs. Animals and procedures Ex vivo analysis and clinical trials were performed separately. For the ex vivo analysis, eight enucleated eyes were obtained from four Beagle dogs. IOP values measured with TONOVET ® (TV‐IOP), TONOVET‐Plus ® (TVP‐IOP), and SW‐500 ® (SW‐IOP) were compared with manometric IOPs. For clinical t
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of topical latanoprost on the anterior segment and ciliary body using ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) in dogs. ANIMALS STUDIED: This study included six eyes of six clinically normal beagles. PROCEDURES: UBM scans were performed on six sedated dogs before and 2 h after topical latanoprost instillation. From the next day on, latanoprost was topically applied twice daily for 7 days. After 1 week of instillation, the UBM scans were repeate
OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to evaluate the relationship between cataract and vitreous degeneration on ultrasonography (VDU) in dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records of dogs were retrospectively reviewed. The dogs presented at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University from January 2009 to December 2011 for ocular ultrasonography to investigate the suitability of the patient for cataract surgery. A total of 97 dogs (179 eyes) were included in this study.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of sub-Tenon's lidocaine injections (ST) on akinesia and mydriasis to those of systemic atracurium (AT) and retrobulbar lidocaine injections in dogs. ANIMAL STUDIED: Ten healthy beagle dogs without apparent ocular disease. PROCEDURES: Three treatments were performed on 10 beagle dogs with a minimum 7-day washout period: intravenous injection of AT (0.2 mg/kg, AT group); retrobulbar (RB) injection of 2% lidocaine (2.0 mL, RB group) in one eye; and sub-Tenon's inje
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of phacoemulsification with different fluidic parameters on the intraocular tissues using contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CE-MRI). PROCEDURES: Phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation was performed on 10 pairs of enucleated canine eyes. Irrigation fluid containing diluted MRI contrast agent was used, with the bottle height/the vacuum pressure set at 50 cm/80 mmHg for one eye (Group L) and at 120 cm/150 mmHg for the opposite eye
This study evaluated the surgical outcome and complications of phacoemulsification and the implantation of an acryl foldable intraocular lens (IOL) with a squared edge in dogs with cataracts. Thirty-two eyes from 26 dogs were examined. The mean follow up period was 75.9 days ranging from 23 to 226 days. The complications after phacoemulsification were posterior capsular opacity (PCO) around the IOL (n = 11), ocular hypertension (n = 4), focal posterior synechia (n = 4), hyphema (n = 3) and corne
This study was conducted to compare the effects of 3 different sedative agents on electroretinography (ERG) in domestic pigeons (<i>Columba livia</i>). Six pigeons were sedated with alfaxalone, xylazine, and medetomidine at separate times with a 1-week washout period between sedative administration. After sedation with each agent, pigeons underwent the modified ERG protocol adapted from the standardized protocol for dogs. The scotopic mixed rod and cone response was recorded after 20 minutes of
Abstract Objective To evaluate the feasibility of ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) and tonometry in pigeons and to provide biometric reference ranges for normal pigeon eyes. Animals studied Ten pigeons ( Columba livia var. domestica ) with ophthalmologically normal eyes. Procedures Ophthalmic examinations, including slit‐lamp biomicroscopy and tonometry, were performed to confirm that the eyes were normal. UBM was then performed on the left eye. On each obtained image, the ciliary cleft (CC) lengt
OBJECTIVE: To compare the measurements of iridocorneal angle parameters between spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) in dogs. ANIMALS STUDIED AND PROCEDURES: A total of 47 eyes of dogs were scanned at the temporal limbus using SD-OCT and UBM. Iridocorneal angle (ICA) and angle opening distance (AOD) were measured from the obtained images accordingly. The intra-observer and inter-observer reproducibility were evaluated using the intraclass corre
