15Here we identify a novel class of biological membrane ion channel blockers called single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). SWNTs with diameter distributions peaked at approximately 0.9 and 1.3 nm, C60 fullerenes, multi wall nanotubes (MWNTs), and hyperfullerenes (nano-"onions") were synthesized by several techniques and applied to diverse channel types heterologously expressed in mammalian cells. External as-fabricated and purified SWNTs blocked K+ channel subunits in a dose-dependent manner. Blo
BACKGROUND: The optimal duration of antibiotic treatment for hematogenous vertebral osteomyelitis (HVO) should be based on the patient's risk of recurrence, but it is not well established. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted to evaluate the optimal duration of antibiotic treatment in patients with HVO at low and high risk of recurrence. Patients with at least 1 independent baseline risk factor for recurrence, determined by multivariable analysis, were considered as high risk and those
In the paper, it is first observed that when a typical iterative learning control (ILC) algorithm is applied to a class of linear dynamic systems with time delay, erratic estimation of delay time may cause the control input to diverge. To resolve such a difficulty due to uncertainty of the delay time, a new ILC algorithm is proposed in which a holding mechanism is adopted to hold the control input at a constant value for the duration of the delay time uncertainty. As a consequence, the output of
Bone involvement is an unusual manifestation of secondary syphilis, but little information is available in the English-language literature. We carried out a systematic review of the English-language literature from 1964 to 2013, describing cases of secondary syphilis with bone involvement. We also describe a case of secondary syphilis with multiple osteolytic lesions, mimicking metastatic cancer or myeloma, which was included in an analysis of 37 eligible cases of secondary syphilis with bone in
OBJECTIVES: Community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) has emerged in the community and has recently been spreading in healthcare settings. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the clinical outcomes and bacterial virulence factors of the Korean CA-MRSA (ST72-SCCmecIV) strain, which causes bloodstream infections. METHODS: All adult patients with MRSA bacteraemia were prospectively enrolled. Clinical outcomes, microbiological characteristics and 40 bacterial virulence factors were evaluated. RES
Described here is a method to measure contractility of isolated skeletal muscles. Parameters such as muscle force, muscle power, contractile kinetics, fatigability, and recovery after fatigue can be obtained to assess specific aspects of the excitation-contraction coupling (ECC) process such as excitability, contractile machinery and Ca(2+) handling ability. This method removes the nerve and blood supply and focuses on the isolated skeletal muscle itself. We routinely use this method to identify
A differential time to positivity (DTP) of ≥ 120 min is useful for diagnosing catheter-related bacteremia, but data on diagnosing catheter-related candidemia (CRC) in this way are limited. We wished to evaluate the usefulness of the DTP for diagnosing CRC. All adult patients who had the same Candida species isolated from blood cultures drawn simultaneously from a central venous catheter (CVC) and a peripheral vein were included at a tertiary care hospital over an 18-month period. A total of 105
BACKGROUND: Patients with hematogenous vertebral osteomyelitis (HVO) occasionally require instrumentation for spinal stabilization. However, placing instrumentation in the setting of spinal infection raises concerns about recurrent infection due to bacteria adhering to the foreign material. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic outcomes of patients with HVO who underwent instrumented surgery. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of adult patients with microbiologically diagno
Spinal implant infection is a rare but significant complication of spinal fusion surgery, and the most common pathogen is Staphylococcus aureus. It is difficult to treat due to this pathogen's biofilm-forming ability and antibiotic resistance. We evaluated the therapeutic outcome of treatments for S aureus spinal implant infections. We retrospectively reviewed all patients with S aureus spinal implant infections at 11 tertiary-care hospitals over a 9-year period. Parameters predictive of treatme
Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria have become a severe problem for public health. Developing new antibiotics for MDR bacteria is difficult, from inception to the clinically approved stage. Here, we have used a new approach, modification of an antibiotic, ciprofloxacin (CFX), with triphenylphosphonium (TPP, PPh3) moiety via ester- (CFX-ester-PPh3) and amide-coupling (CFX-amide-PPh3) to target bacterial membranes. In this study, we have evaluated the antibacterial activities of CFX and its deriva
Based on our susceptibility data, vancomycin combined with a broad-spectrum cephalosporin or fluoroquinolone may be appropriate for empiric treatment of HVO. Fluoroquinolone-based oral combinations may be not appropriate due to frequent resistance to these agents, especially in cases of healthcare-associated HVO.
We have identified a family of ancillary subunits of K(+) channels in Caenorhabditis elegans. MPS-1 and its related members MPS-2, MPS-3, and MPS-4 are detected in the nervous system of the nematode. Electrophysiological analysis in ASE neurons and mammalian cells and epigenetic inactivation by double-stranded RNA interference (RNAi) in vivo show that each MPS can associate with and functionally endow the voltage-gated K(+) channel KVS-1. In the chemosensory neuron ADF, three different MPS subun
