15We integrate the social functional view of emotions with recent developments in workplace envy research to develop and test a novel theoretical framework showing that envious employees can use their envy to promote self-enhancing actions rather than other-diminishing behaviors. We theorize that enviers’ core self-evaluations and friendship ties will attenuate the extent to which enviers undermine envied targets and promote the extent to which enviers actively learn from their envied targets thro
In preparing to fit test a large workforce, a respirator program manager needs to initially choose respirators that will fit the greatest proportion of employees and achieve the best fits. This article discusses our strategy in selecting respirators from an initial array of seven NIOSH-certified Type N95 filtering-facepiece devices for a respiratory protection program against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb) aerosol. The seven respirators were screened based on manufacturer-provided fit test d
Halide anion effects of ILs were investigated using eight IL samples: [BMIm]Cl (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride; Aldrich 97%), [BMIm]Br (Aldrich, 97%), [BMIm]I (prepared), [EMIm]Cl (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride; c-tri Korea, 98%), [HMIm]Cl (1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride; c-tri Korea, 98%), [OMIm]Cl (1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium chlo-ride; c-tri Korea, 98%), [BMpyri]Cl (1-butyl-4-methylpyridini-um chloride; prepared, 98%) and [BMpyrr]Cl (1-butyl-4-methyl-pyrrolidinium chloride;
Inhibition of angiogenesis is emerging as a promising strategy for the treatment of cancer. In our study reported here, the effects of 4 highly potent methionine aminopeptidase 2 (MetAP2) inhibitors, IDR-803, IDR-804, IDR-805 and CKD-732 (designed by structure-based molecular modeling), on angiogenesis and tumor growth were assessed. Concentrations of these inhibitors as low as 2.5 nM were able to inhibit the growth of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) by as much as 50%, arresting g
BACKGROUND: Oculocardiac reflex (OCR) is a major complication of pediatric strabismus surgery. The aim of the present study was to determine whether a single bolus of intravenous (i.v.) ketamine for anesthetic induction can decrease OCR in children undergoing strabismus surgery. METHODS: One hundred and twenty healthy children undergoing strabismus surgery were allocated to three groups using double-blind randomization. Anesthesia was induced with propofol 3 mg/kg in Group P, ketamine 1 mg/kg in
Several studies have sought systematically to identify protein subcellular locations, but an even larger task is to map which of these proteins conditionally relocates in disease (the mislocalizome). Here, we report an integrative computational framework for mapping conditional location and mislocation of proteins on a proteome-wide scale, called a conditional location predictor (CoLP). Using CoLP, we mapped the locations of over 10,000 proteins in normal human brain and in glioma. The predictio
Singleton live births with breech presentation delivered by cesarean had lower birth weight-specific neonatal mortality as compared with vaginal births.
Exposures to carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were determined in seven enclosed ice skating rinks and an outdoor rink. The uptake of CO was also determined by the difference in alveolar CO concentration of the non-smoking hockey players before and after games. Carbon monoxide concentrations in enclosed rinks ranged from 4 to 117 ppm and NO2 concentrations from 342 to 2729 ppb for 2 h hockey games. The CO uptakes were linearly related to the ambient CO concentrations. Alveolar CO o
OBJECTIVE: Maintaining lumbosacral (LS) arthrodesis and global sagittal balance after long fusion to the sacrum remains an important issue in the surgical treatment for adult spinal deformity (ASD). The importance and usefulness of LS fixation have been documented, but the optimal surgical long fusion to the sacrum remains a matter for debate. Therefore, the authors performed a retrospective study to evaluate fusion on CT scans and the risk factors for LS pseudarthrosis (nonunion) after long fus
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. OBJECTIVE: To analyze proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) occurrence and surgical outcomes according to degree of lumbar lordosis (LL) correction relative to pelvic incidence (PI). In addition, risk factors of PJK including LL and sagittal vertical axis (SVA) correction were investigated. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: PJK is a common complication after adult spinal deformity surgery, and many factors are known to be associated with PJK. However, the effect of degr
We report on the compatibility of various nanowires with hippocampal neurons and the structural study of the neuron-nanowire interface. Si, Ge, SiGe, and GaN nanowires are compatible with hippocampal neurons due to their native oxide, but ZnO nanowires are toxic to neuron due to a release of Zn ion. The interfaces of fixed Si nanowire and hippocampal neuron, cross-sectional samples, were prepared by focused ion beam and observed by transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the pr
