Early-Life Stress Modulates Gut Microbiota and Peripheral and Central Inflammation in a Sex-Dependent Manner
Hae Jeong Park, Sang A. Kim, Won Sub Kang, Jong Woo Kim
SJR Q1International Journal of Molecular SciencesOA

Recent studies have reported that changes in gut microbiota composition could induce neuropsychiatric problems. In this study, we investigated alterations in gut microbiota induced by early-life stress (ELS) in rats subjected to maternal separation (MS; 6 h a day, postnatal days (PNDs) 1–21), along with changes in inflammatory cytokines and tryptophan-kynurenine (TRP-KYN) metabolism, and assessed the differences between sexes. High-throughput sequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene showed that

A stress test to incorporate correlation breakdown
Jong‐Woo Kim, Christopher C. Finger
SJR Q4The Journal of Risk

The authors introduce the broken arrow stress test, in which they estimate correlation levels in stress situations and apply these correlation levels to arrive at the expected loss for the peripheral assets in the stress test. To identify correlation in stress situations, the joint distribution of core and peripheral assets is specified as a mixture of normals. For the majority of cases, the asset returns are drawn from a normal distribution with lower volatility and one level of correlation; on

Retinal Disease Classification from OCT Images Using Deep Learning Algorithms
Jong-Woo Kim, Loc Tran

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive test that takes cross-section pictures of the retina layer of the eye and allows ophthalmologists to diagnose based on the retina's layers. Therefore, it is an important modality for the detection and quantification of retinal diseases and retinal abnormalities. Since OCT provides several images for each patient, it is a time consuming work for ophthalmologists to analyze the images. This paper proposes deep learning models that categorize pati

Efficacy and Safety of Auricular Acupuncture for Cognitive Impairment and Dementia: A Systematic Review
Chan‐Young Kwon, Boram Lee, Hyo-Weon Suh, Sun-Yong Chung, Jong Woo Kim
Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative MedicineOA

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the efficacy and safety of auricular acupuncture (AA) in patients with cognitive impairment and dementia. METHODS: Twelve electronic databases were searched for randomized controlled trials evaluating effects of AA in patients with cognitive impairment and/or dementia, from their inception to August 2017. The primary outcome was cognitive function, and secondary outcomes were self-care ability, quality of life, clinical efficacy rate, and incidences of adverse events. RESU

Effects of a Brief Qigong-based Stress Reduction Program (BQSRP) in a distressed Korean population: a randomized trial
Eun-Young Hwang, Sun-Yong Chung, Jae‐Heung Cho, Mi‐Yeon Song, Sehyun Kim, Jong-Woo Kim
BMC Complementary and Alternative MedicineOA

BACKGROUND: Distressed individuals in Korea may benefit from the practice of mind-body exercises such as Qigong. However, the effectiveness of such techniques needs to be investigated. METHODS: Fifty participants who were eligible to this study were randomized into a group receiving a 4-week intervention of a brief Qigong-based stress reduction program (BQSRP) or a wait-list control group. Before and after the intervention period, saliva samples were collected and questionnaires were completed o

Using Mind–Body Modalities via Telemedicine during the COVID-19 Crisis: Cases in the Republic of Korea
Chan‐Young Kwon, Hui-Yong Kwak, Jong Woo Kim
SJR Q2International Journal of Environmental Research and Public HealthOA

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic affected the world, and its deleterious effects on human domestic life, society, economics, and especially on human mental health are expected to continue. Mental health experts highlighted health issues this pandemic may cause, such as depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Mind-body intervention, such as mindfulness meditation, has accumulated sufficient empirical evidence supporting the efficacy

SJR Q1The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & MetabolismOA

CONTEXT: Very recently the unforeseen role of syndecan 3 (SDC3), a family of membrane-bound heparin sulfate proteoglycans, in the regulation of energy balance has been discovered in the Sdc3 null female mice. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to test the hypothesis that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in SDC3 are associated with obesity in the Korean population. DESIGN/SETTING/SUBJECTS: We conducted a population-based cohort study consisting of 229 control and 245 study subjects a

SJR Q1Frontiers in PsychiatryOA

Background: Insomnia causes a huge socioeconomic burden among the elderly, and is not simply a health problem. This study aimed to determine the comparative advantage of the effectiveness and acceptability of non-pharmacological interventions available for elderly individuals with insomnia. Methods: Comprehensive searches in 13 medical databases were performed to find relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) up to August 2019. Two independent reviewers performed study selection, data extract

SJR Q1CNS Neuroscience & TherapeuticsOA

BACKGROUND: Early life stress (ELS) causes alterations in emotionality and anxiety levels as a significant risk factor for psychiatric problems, and these alterations have been associated with amygdala activity. AIMS: To elucidate the molecular mechanism on the development of psychiatric problems following ELS, we identified the alteration of molecules in the amygdala using maternal separation (MS; pnd 14-21) rats through gene expression and DNA methylation microarray analysis, and studied the i
