The dopamine D(2) receptor (D2R) plays a critical role in diverse neurophysiological functions. D2R knock-out mice (D2R(-/-)) show reduced food intake and body weight while displaying an increased basal energy expenditure level, compared with their wild type littermates. Thus, these mice show a lean phenotype. D2R(-/-) mice displayed increased leptin sensitivity, and leptin injection induced increased phosphorylation of the hypothalamic signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3)

BMC Complementary and Alternative MedicineOA

We identified the frequency, characteristics, and functional modules of herb combinations frequently used in alopecia treatment. We confirmed the value of classical medicinal herb theory. This finding will prompt further bioinformatics and network pharmacology research on alopecia.

Anti-Inflammatory Effect of Keigai-rengyo-to Extract and Acupuncture in Male Patients with Acne Vulgaris: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial
Kyuseok Kim, Yoon‐Bum Kim
The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the efficacy and interaction of Keigai-rengyo-to extract (KRTE) and acupuncture in male patients with acne and the feasibility of a large clinical trial. DESIGN: A randomized, assessor single-blinded, 2×2 factorial trial was conducted. The trial is registered with the Clinical Research Information Service, Republic of Korea: KCT0000071. SUBJECTS: Forty-four (44) participants with acne vulgaris were randomized into one of four groups: wait

SJR Q1BMC Complementary Medicine and TherapiesOA

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic recurrent inflammatory skin disease that affects 1-3% of adults worldwide. Currently, it is not possible to completely cure AD; therefore, alternative treatments need to be developed to meet the patients' needs. Here, based on our previous pilot study, we conducted the first confirmatory randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effect of acupuncture in patients with mild to moderate AD. METHODS: A randomized, participant- and assessor-blinded, s

Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative MedicineOA

Dangguibohyul-tang (DBT), herbal formula composed of Astragalus membranaceus (AM) and Angelica sinensis (AS) at a ratio of 5 : 1, has been used for the treatment of various skin diseases in traditional medicine. We investigated the effect of DBT on allergic and inflammatory skin reaction in atopic dermatitis-like model compared to the single extract of AM or AS. DBT treatment showed the remission of clinical symptoms, including decreased skin thickness and scratching behavior, the total serum Ig

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Hair loss is one of the most common skin problems experienced by more than half of the world's population. In East Asia, medicinal herbs have been used widely in clinical practice to treat hair loss. Recent studies, including systematic literature reviews, indicate that medicinal herbs may demonstrate potential effects for hair loss treatment. In a previous study, we identified medical herbs used frequently for alopecia treatment. Herein, we explored the potential novel therapeutic mechanisms of

Exploring the Differences in the Gut Microbiome in Atopic Dermatitis According to the Presence of Gastrointestinal Symptoms
Chang-Yi Han, Soon-Kyeong Kwon, Mijung Yeom, Dae‐Hyun Hahm, Jae-Woo Park, Hi‐Joon Park, Kyuseok Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

(1) Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a multifactorial chronic allergic skin disease. Gastrointestinal (GI) functions have been suggested to be associated with its incidence or severity. As modulators of the gut–skin axis, gut microbes might affect the pathophysiology of AD. (2) Methods: We divided a cohort of patients with AD according to their GI symptoms as follows: AD with epigastric fullness (ADwEF), AD with epigastric rigidity (ADwER), and AD without GI symptoms (ADw/oGI). The gut micr

Inhibitory effects of Cheongsangbangpoong-tang on both inflammatory acne lesions and facial heat in patients with acne vulgaris: A randomized controlled trial protocol
Kyuseok Kim, Kwan‐Il Kim, Jun‐Hee Lee
BMC Complementary and Alternative MedicineOA

BACKGROUND: Due to increasing interest from acne patients concerned about the side effects associated with conventional therapies, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has been suggested as a new therapeutic modality for acne vulgaris. Herbal medicine is one of these CAM treatments. Cheongsangbangpoong-tang (CBT) is a common herbal formula used in patients with acne vulgaris in the clinical practice of Korean Medicine (KM). However, despite the common use of CBT in clinical practice, the

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

This is the first study to investigate serum lipids, amino acids, and cytokines in subjects with acne. We analyzed the differences between metabolomic profiles to determine the diagnostic value of PI. Prospective studies with more patients are needed to confirm the characteristics of each PI and lipidomic data will enrich knowledge concerning lipid mechanism.
