15Salmonella enterica serovars Enteritidis and Typhimurium are the most common causative agents of human nontyphoidal salmonellosis. The rapid detection and timely treatment of salmonellosis are important to increase the curative ratio and prevent spreading of the disease. In this study, we developed a rapid multiplex convection polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method to detect Salmonella spp. and differentiate Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium. We used the invA gene for Salmonella
This study explores the short-term effects of COVID-19 on marriage and divorce rates in Korea. We document a 9.6–13.9% reduction in the provincial crude marriage rate in March-June 2020 after the surge in COVID-19 cases. On top of this overall decline, a one-unit increase in the number of confirmed cases per 1, 000 people in a given province decreased the marriage rate by 3.8–6.2%. The crude divorce rate decreases by 3.2–7.1% after the surge of COVID-19. Our results imply that the decline in mar
Rapid detection and timely treatment of diseases caused by foodborne pathogens is important for improving the curative efficiency and preventing the spread of disease. In this study, we developed an assay utilizing a recently introduced ultra-fast convection polymerase chain reaction (cPCR) in conjunction with a simple nucleic acid lateral flow (NALF) immunoassay for ultra-fast on-site molecular detection of foodborne pathogens. Two Salmonella enterica serovars, Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmon
Using province-level establishments and employment data from the Korean Employment Insurance Database, this paper investigates how the regional spread of COVID-19 affects local businesses and unemployment by establishment size and industry. We find that the number of small establishments declines substantially after the COVID-19 pandemic through a decrease in new establishment creation and a surge in establishment closures. By contrast, large establishments are not affected significantly. Examin
Abstract This study explores how the distinctive Korean age reckoning, the Confucian age culture, and the school-entry-cutoff date affect the decisions of parents on both birth and school-entry timing for their children in Korea. There is a traditional method of age calculation in Korea that all people get one year older on January 1. Korea also has a distinctive age culture influenced by Confucianism. I find a substantial amount of birth and school-entry timing selections around the Korean age-
BACKGROUND: There is little empirical evidence on the effects of social connectedness on geriatric depression for Southeast Asians. Studies have rarely examined interethnic differences in the resilience factors for depression in this diverse population. Greater understanding is needed as the number of older Southeast Asians in the United States increases. OBJECTIVES: We sought to examine the association between social connectedness and depressive symptoms in Vietnamese, Laotian, and Cambodian el
Several studies seem to support the hypothesis that brain anatomy is associated with transsexualism. However, these studies were still limited because few neuroanatomical findings have been obtained from female-to-male (FtM) transsexuals. This study compared the cerebral regional volumes of gray matter (GM) between FtM transsexuals and female controls using a voxel-based morphometry. Twelve FtM transsexuals who had undergone sex-reassignment surgery and 15 female controls participated in this st
Abstract This study estimates the effects of school start time on sleep time, time use, and educational achievement of high school students. Gyeonggi province, the largest province in South Korea, has implemented the 9 O’clock Attendance Policy, which has delayed school start times to 9:00 AM since September 2014. Changes in the above outcomes before and after the policy implementation are compared between Gyeonggi and other provinces which do not implement the policy. The difference-in-differen
Objectives Dysphagia is a common in stroke patients. Dysphagia often affects the rehabilitation of stroke patients by increasing the risk of nutritional deficits and aspiration pneumonia. Despite the proliferation of physical therapies including swallowing training, much controversy remains regarding the application and benefit of them. Therefore, in this study, the clinical effect of moxibustion at Chonjung(CV17, Shanzhong) on post-stroke dysphagia were assessed using Swallowing Provocation Te
