15BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diagnosis of Moyamoya disease (MMD) is based on the characteristic angiographic findings. However, differentiating MMD from intracranial atherosclerotic disease (ICAD) is difficult. We compared vessel wall imaging findings on high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging between MMD and ICAD. METHODS: High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging was performed on 32 patients with angiographically proven MMD and 16 patients with acute infarcts because of ICAD. Bilateral internal
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Carbon monoxide intoxication has delayed effects on the cerebral white matter characterized by bilateral, confluent lesions that reflect diffuse demyelination. To increase our understanding of this process, we assessed the diffusion characteristics of these lesions. METHODS: Five consecutive patients with delayed encephalopathy of CO intoxication were examined with diffusion MR imaging. Diffusion-weighted images (DWIs) were obtained 25-95 days after their exposure to CO a
Unenhanced CT plus MR imaging was more accurate for distinguishing TDLs from glioma or CNS lymphoma than contrast-enhanced MR imaging alone.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To investigate the association between thyroid autoantibodies and moyamoya disease (MMD) in patients with an apparent euthyroid state. METHODS: We prospectively studied angiographically diagnosed patients with MMD. We compared demographic profiles, thyroid function test, and thyroid autoantibody status between MMD and control groups. RESULTS: A total of 63 patients with MMD, 71 patients with non-MMD stroke, and 200 healthy control subjects were included. The prevalence of
OBJECTIVE: Dedicated magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (MRI) sequences for evaluation of collaterals can be generated using MR perfusion (MRP) source data. We compared a novel collateral flow imaging technique with digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for determining collateral circulation in acute stroke and evaluated the ability of MR-based collateral flow maps to predict outcomes after recanalization therapy. METHODS: Consecutive patients who were candidates for endovascular treatment were enr
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between peripheral calcification in thyroid nodules detected on ultrasonography and thyroid malignancy. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the ultrasonographic features of 65 pathologically proven thyroid lesions showing peripheral calcification for their correlation with histopathologic results. The following ultrasonographic parameters were assessed for each nodule: size (maximal dimension), shape (anteroposterior dimens
Careful consideration of MMD is needed when diagnosing ICAS because differential therapeutic strategies are required for these diseases and due to the limitations of the current diagnostic criteria for MMD.
Most clinical trials have focused on the presence of perfusion- and diffusion-weighted imaging (PWI-DWI) mismatch by more than 20%, and different stroke subtypes were lumped together. We hypothesized that intracranial large artery atherosclerotic stroke (IC-LAA) would show different PWI-DWI and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA)-DWI mismatch profiles, compared with other stroke subtypes. Consecutive patients underwent pretreatment multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging for the acute middle
This community-hospital based study suggested a higher prevalence of UIAs observed by MRA than previously reported. These findings should be anticipated in the design and use of neuroimaging in clinical practice.
