노인 인구의 급증과 함께 치매 문제가 중요한 이슈가 되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 치매 환자의 보호와 부양의 주체인 치매 환자 보호자들의 치매 태도가 어떻게 나타나는지를 탐색해보았다. 연구 결과 치매 환자 보호자들의 치매에 대한 태도는 5가지 유형으로 구분되었다. : 책임부담형, 애정형, 양가감정형, 측은지심형, 적극 치료형. 각 유형은 치매 및 노인에 대한 태도와 치매 치료 및 예방에 대한 태도, 치매환자 부양 및 책임 주체에 대한 생각, 간병에 대한 정서 반응에서 서로 다른 특성을 지니고 있었다. 본 연구는 기존의 연구들이 긍정-부정의 하나의 축으로 치매 태도를 탐색하던 것에서 벗어나, 치매 환자 보호자들이 치매에 대해 가지고 있는 질적으로 다른 태도 유형을 확인하였다는데 그 의의가 있다. 또한 본 연구 결과는 향후 치매 환자 보호자들에 대한 서비스와 지원, 치매 교육 등을 기획하는데 있어 중요한 기초 자료가 될 수 있을 것이라 생각된다.
