15Extra-articular subtalar arthrodesis appears to be an effective means to achieve predictable correction of severe valgus deformity of the heel in patients with cerebral palsy who are able to walk; however, supination deformity of the forefoot remains and calcaneal equinus is not corrected. On the other hand, we believe that the calcaneal lengthening osteotomy is the treatment of choice because postoperative foot-pressure distribution more closely approximates the normal foot-pressure distributio
Tibial tubercle avulsion fracture caused by knee extensor is very rare; furthermore, non-traumatic fractures during running or bilateral fractures have been reported. The purpose of this study was to evaluate any differences according to the mechanisms of injury in adolescents with tibial tubercle avulsion fracture.Thirty patients with tibial tubercle avulsion fractures were reviewed and the average age was 13 years 1 month. Seven patients (low-stress group) had a spontaneous fracture during run
Therapeutic Level IV. See Instructions to Authors for a complete description of levels of evidence.
Open reduction followed by K-wire fixation or screw fixation of the displaced medial humeral epicondyle fracture without elbow dislocation in older children and adolescents resulted in improved radiologic outcome and good elbow function in spite of diverse radiologic deformities.
OBJECTIVE: Vertebral body sliding osteotomy (VBSO) is a safe, novel technique for anterior decompression in patients with multilevel cervical spondylotic myelopathy. Another advantage of VBSO may be the restoration of cervical lordosis through multilevel anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) above and below the osteotomy level. This study aimed to evaluate the improvement and maintenance of cervical lordosis and sagittal alignment after VBSO. METHODS: A total of 65 patients were include
There was insufficient evidence to decide the efficacy of prereduction traction before closed reduction in reducing the risk of AVN in patients with DDH in this meta-analysis. To recommend prereduction traction for the prevention of AVN, long-term follow-up studies considering age, severity of dislocation, and appropriate traction method are needed.
BACKGROUND: Phalangeal neck fractures in children are difficult to treat conservatively because of the difficulty in maintaining reduction, obtaining satisfactory follow-up x-rays, and the limited remodeling potential. The purpose of this study was to present the results after using buddy taping with a short-arm splint for phalangeal neck fracture in children and to compare with operative treatment. METHODS: Thirty-seven patients below 12 years old who had phalangeal neck fractures were included
Pelvic retraction during walking is a common finding seen in patients with spastic hemiplegia. However, potential factors related to this condition have not been comprehensively examined in a systemic manner in previous studies. The purpose of this study was to elucidate any clinical and gait parameters related to pelvic retraction in patients with hemiplegic cerebral palsy. A total of 212 independent ambulatory patients were enrolled in the study. Group I consisted of 113 patients who had persi
Growing participation in youth athletics has resulted in increased numbers of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in skeletally immature patients. Use of autogenous graft material has been associated with improved graft survival. However, pediatric patients sometimes possess hamstring tendons that produce smaller-diameter grafts than those prepared with adult autogenous materials. Smaller-diameter grafts may predispose younger patients to graft failure. We describe a technique that increas
Synovial plica is rarely diagnosed as cause of elbow pain. Impingemnt of posterolateral plicae in the radiocapitellar joint tends to be usually overlooked. The purpose of this study was to present outcomes of arthroscopic treatment in relatively large number of cases and propose reliable diagnostic test for posterolateral plicae of the radiocapitellar joint. From January 2000 to December 2010, 24 cases diagnosed with pathologic posterolateral radiocapitellar plica on arthroscopic finding were ret
Congenital accessory limbs are very rare anomalies with many causative factors. We describe the case of a 1-day-old female neonate-born to a healthy, 27-year-old mother-who presented with an accessory limb (foot) attached to the buttock and an imperforate anus. We also provide a review of the relevant literature.
This study evaluated the differences in muscle-tendon lengths during single limb support between recurvatum and crouch knee in patients with cerebral palsy. Group I consisted of 14 patients who had recurvatum knee, whereas group II consisted of 17 patients who had crouch knee. Compared with group II, group I had decreased ankle power and plantarflexion moment and only the average muscle-tendon lengths of the gluteus medius and vasti was decreased. There were no differences in other muscle-tendon
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective comparative radiographic study. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in the pedicle diameters of proximal thoracic vertebrae in relation to the severity of the proximal thoracic curve in Asian patients with idiopathic scoliosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: A small pedicle diameter at the proximal thoracic vertebra has been reported in normal population, but the changes of pedicle diameter in patients with a proximal thoracic curve have no
BACKGROUND: Percutaneous epiphysiodesis using a transphyseal screw (PETS) or tension-band plating (TBP) has shown favourable correction results; however, the physeal behaviours in terms of rebound, stable correction, or overcorrection after guided growth have not been completely understood. In patients with idiopathic genu valgum, we therefore asked: (1) How is the correction maintained after implant removal of guided growth? (2) Is there any difference in the natural behaviours after PETS or TB
