We demonstrate that adenoviral-mediated gene transfer of a dominant negative rac1 gene product (N17rac1) inhibits the intracellular burst of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that occurs after reoxygenation of vascular smooth muscle cells. In contrast, expression of a dominant negative ras gene (N17ras) had no effect. Challenge of control cells and cells expressing N17rac1 with a direct oxidant stress produced an equivalent increase in intracellular ROS levels and subsequent cell death. This suggest

Residual Paralysis Induced by Either Vecuronium or Rocuronium After Reversal with Pyridostigmine

SJR Q1Anesthesia & Analgesia

Without monitoring, the significant residual neuromuscular block after vecuronium or rocuronium is not eliminated even by reversal with a large dose of pyridostigmine and can still be a problem in the recovery room.

Tactile Assessment for the Reversibility of Rocuronium-Induced Neuromuscular Blockade During Propofol or Sevoflurane Anesthesia
Kyo Sang Kim, Mi Ae Cheong, Hee Jun Lee, Jae Moo Lee
SJR Q1Anesthesia & Analgesia

We sought to determine whether tactile train-of-four (TOF) count can predict the efficacy of neostigmine administration for rocuronium-induced blockade during propofol or sevoflurane anesthesia, and to follow subsequent recovery until the TOF ratio reached 0.9. One-hundred-sixty patients, divided into eight equal groups, were randomly allocated to maintenance of anesthesia with propofol or sevoflurane. The tactile response of the adductor pollicis to TOF stimulation was evaluated on one arm, and

Ephedrine Reduces the Pain from Propofol Injection
Mi Ae Cheong, Kyo Sang Kim, Won Jun Choi
SJR Q1Anesthesia & Analgesia

Propofol is a widely used IV anesthetic for the induction of anesthesia, but it often causes local pain when administered into peripheral veins. A small dose of ephedrine reduces the incidence and intensity of the pain without significant adverse hemodynamic effects during induction.

Capsicum Plaster at the Korean Hand Acupuncture Point Reduces Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting After Abdominal Hysterectomy

SJR Q1Anesthesia & Analgesia

Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are still common and distressing problems after general anesthesia, especially in patients undergoing abdominal hysterectomy. We studied a nonpharmacological therapy of PONV—capsicum plaster (PAS)—at either the Korean hand acupuncture point K-D2 or the Chinese acupuncture point Pericardium 6 (P6) of both hands. One-hundred-sixty healthy patients were included in a randomized, double-blinded study: 60 patients were in the control group, 50 patients were in

Neuromuscular interaction between cisatracurium and mivacurium, atracurium, vecuronium or rocuronium administered in combination

SJR Q1AnaesthesiaOA

We compared the dose-response relationships of cisatracurium, mivacurium, atracurium, vecuronium and rocuronium and examined the interactions of cisatracurium with mivacurium, atracurium, vecuronium and rocuronium in humans by isobolographic and fractional analyses. We studied 180 adult patients during nitrous oxide-fentanyl-propofol anaesthesia. Neuromuscular block was monitored using mechanomyography to detect the twitch response of the ulnar nerve at the wrist. The dose-response curves were d

The Analgesic Effects of Capsicum Plaster at the Zusanli Point After Abdominal Hysterectomy
Kyo Sang Kim, Yu M. Nam
SJR Q1Anesthesia & Analgesia

In Brief BACKGROUND: Acupuncture has been used to supplement opioid analgesics for postoperative pain control. We designed this double-blind, sham-controlled study to assess the effectiveness of capsicum plaster (PAS) at Zusanli (ST-36) acupoints on postoperative opioid analgesic requirement, side effects, and recovery profile. METHODS: Ninety women undergoing total abdominal hysterectomy were randomly assigned to 3 treatment regimens (n = 30 each): group Zusanli = PAS at Zusanli acupoints, grou

Prevention of postoperative sore throat using capsicum plaster applied at the Korean hand acupuncture point

SJR Q1Anaesthesia

In a randomised, double-blind, sham-controlled study, we compared the efficacy of capsicum plaster (PAS) applied at the Korean hand acupuncture point for the prevention of postoperative sore throat in 150 patients scheduled to undergo abdominal hysterectomy. The K group had PAS applied at the K-A20 of both hands and placebo tape at both non-acupoints. The PAS was applied prior to induction of anaesthesia and removed 8 h postoperatively. The sore throat scores of Group K were significantly lower

SJR Q2Pediatric Anesthesia

BACKGROUND: Capsicum plaster at a classical Chinese acupoint is an alternative to acupuncture, which has been used as a supplemental therapy to opioid analgesics for pain control during the postoperative period. We investigated the postoperative analgesic efficacy of capsicum plaster at Zusanli (ST-36) points after pediatric hernia repair. METHODS: This double-blind, sham-controlled study was designed in 108 children, aged 4 month to 9 year, undergoing unilateral hernia repair, and was randomly
