15When patients with chronic posterior neck pain underwent a short-term forest bathing (less than 7 days) program, FBE was more effective in the reduction of the number of TRPs than FBA. However, all other pain measurement scales we evaluated showed no statistically significant difference between the two protocols.
We evaluated the clinical outcome of tendon reconstruction using tendon graft or tendon transfer and the parameters related to clinical outcome in 51 wrists of 46 patients with rheumatoid arthritis with finger extensor tendon ruptures. At a mean follow-up of 5.6 years, the mean metacarpophalangeal (MP) joint extension lag was 8 degrees (range, 0-45) and the mean visual analogue satisfaction scale was 74 (range, 10-100). Clinical outcome did not differ significantly between tendon grafting and te
OBJECTIVE: To identify ankylosing spondylitis (AS)-associated copy number variations (CNVs) in Korean subjects and their synergistic roles in the development of AS. METHODS: A genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed in 309 patients with AS and 309 control subjects, using a copy number variant (CNV) microarray. AS-associated CNV regions were replicated in 2 independent sets (625 patients and 891 control subjects) by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and deletion-typing PCR.
This study shows that both reduced spinal mobility and radiographic changes in the vertebral body may have a predictive value for pulmonary impairment in patients with AS. Likewise, pain and perceived physical condition may play an important role in the QOL, functional capacity, and fatigue level of these patients.
Botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) injections improve muscle tone and range of motion (ROM) among stroke patients with upper limb spasticity. However, the efficacy of BTX-A injections for improving active function is unclear. We aimed to determine whether BTX-A injections with electrical stimulation (ES) of hand muscles could improve active hand function (AHF) among chronic stroke patients. Our open-label, pilot study included 15 chronic stroke patients. Two weeks after BTX-A injections into the fin
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of an arm sling on gait speed and energy efficiency of patients with hemiplegia. DESIGN: A randomized crossover design. SETTING: A rehabilitation department of a university hospital. SUBJECTS: Thirty-seven outpatients with hemiplegia were included in this study. INTERVENTIONS: All patients walked on a 20-m walkway twice on the same day, randomly with and without an arm sling, at a self selected speed. MAIN MEASURES: The heart rate, gait speed, oxygen cost and ox
Numerical values measured with PV showed consistent results with repeated calculations. Electrically measured QPD showed an excellent correlation with MPQ but not with VAS. These results demonstrate that PV is a significantly reliable device for quantifying the intensity of low back pain.
OBJECTIVE: To apply tailored rehabilitation education to video display terminal (VDT) workers with musculoskeletal pain and to assess changes in musculoskeletal pain after rehabilitation education. METHODS: A total of 8,828 VDT workers were screened for musculoskeletal disorders using a self-report questionnaire. Six hundred twenty-six VDT workers selected based on their questionnaires were enrolled in musculoskeletal rehabilitation education, which consisted of education on VDT syndrome and con
OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) genotypes and risk and severity of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in a Korean population. METHODS: A total of 258 Korean patients with RA and 400 control subjects were recruited from Hanyang University Hospital. Subjects were genotyped for the -765G/C polymorphism of the COX-2 gene by RFLP-PCR analysis. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated to estimate risk. Severity of RA was assessed by anatomical
OBJECTIVE: To determine if there is muscle mass reduction in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) compared to the general population and to examine the relationship between skeletal muscle mass, quality of life (QOL), strength, and mobility in patients with AS. METHODS: A total of 30 AS patients were enrolled in this study. Skeletal muscle mass was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis, and it was expressed as the skeletal muscle mass index (SMI). QOL was assessed using the EuroQOL (
Retropharyngeal calcific tendinitis is defined as inflammation of the longus colli muscle and is caused by the deposition of calcium hydroxyapatite crystals, which usually involves the superior oblique fibers of the longus colli muscle from C1-3. Diagnosis is usually made by detecting amorphous calcification and prevertebral soft tissue swelling on radiograph, CT or MRI. In this report, we introduce a case of this disease which was misdiagnosed as a retropharyngeal tuberculous abscess, or a musc
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the differences in oxygen consumption associated with gait in hemiplegic patients according to the type of cane they use. DESIGN: A randomized crossover design. SETTING: University hospital-based rehabilitation center, Korea. SUBJECTS: Thirty consecutive patients (mean ± SD age, 56.3 ± 3.2 years) with chronic stroke, 17 (56.7%) males and 13 (43.3%) females. INTERVENTIONS: At approximately the same time of day for three consecutive days, each participant completed a wal
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there was a difference in balance, proprioception, and skeletal muscle mass among patients who undergo hip fracture surgery relative to and elective total hip replacement (THR). METHODS: Thirty-one THR patients were enrolled. The patients were categorized into two groups: fracture group (n=15) and non-fracture group (n=16). Berg Balance Scale (BBS) was used to balance the proprioception of the hip joint while a joint position sense (JPS) test was used to evaluate
