Estimation of fertility variation in forest tree populations
Kyu‐Suk Kang
SJR Q1Forestry An International Journal of Forest Research

Forecasts of the effects of tree breeding and conservation operations require information on fertility variation. In most cases, however, the information does not exist or is highly unreliable. In this paper, published studies on flowering abundance, fruit and seed production were used to estimate and review fertility variation in 99 stands and 36 seed orchards. Fertility variations were described by the coefficient of variation (CV) and the sibling coefficient (Ψ). Both measures express how par

Fertility variation and its effect on the relatedness of seeds in Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii and Pinus koraiensis clonal seed orchards

SJR Q3Silvae genetica/Silvae Genetica

The numbers of female and male strobili were counted in clonal seed orchards with 99 clones of Pinus densiflora and 60 clones of P. thunbergii and in an archive consisting of 180 clones of P. koraiensis, respectively. The observation data showed a great variation in both female and male strobili among clones in the three populations. It was possible to express the expected contribution of genotypes to seed crop as an inverse of cumulative function of type, x = F(x) 1/a , where x is the expected

Clonal and annual variation of flower production and composition of gamete gene pool in a clonal seed orchard of Pinus densiflora
Kyu‐Suk Kang
SJR Q1Canadian Journal of Forest Research

The numbers of female and male strobili were assessed for 99 clones in a Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. seed orchard for four consecutive years. The data showed that differences for the production of both female and male strobili among clones were very large and statistically significant for all years examined. The most abundant quartile of clones produced 48.1 and 37.3% of the total female and male strobili, respectively, averaged over the 4-year period. Differences in female strobilus product

Fertility Variation, Genetic Relatedness, and Their Impacts on Gene Diversity of Seeds From a Seed Orchard of Pinus thunbergii
Kyu‐Suk Kang, D. Lindgren, T. J. Mullin
SJR Q3Silvae genetica/Silvae GeneticaOA

Abstract Clonal differences in the number of male and female strobili were determined for five consecutive years in a clonal seed orchard of Pinus thunbergii in Korea. The effects of relatedness and clonal differences in reproductive development on gene diversity of seed (in terms of accumulated relatedness by status number) were estimated. While clonal differences were found, fertility variation was not large through all studied years. The orchard clones were divided into different regions and

Genetic Gain and Diversity under Different Selection Methods in a Breeding Seed Orchard of Quercus serrata
Kyu‐Suk Kang, Byung-Whan Cheon, Sangil Han, C. S. Kim, Weon-Young Choi
SJR Q3Silvae genetica/Silvae GeneticaOA

Abstract Genetic gain and diversity were estimated in a 13- year old Quercus serrata breeding seed orchard under three selection (rouging) methods. The selections were based on individual selection, family selection, and family plus within family selection. Genetic gain was for stem volume and gene diversity was estimated by status number concept. Both estimated genetic gain and gene diversity were compared to those before selection and among selection scenarios. Estimated genetic gain for tree

SJR Q1BMC Plant BiologyOA

Abstract Background Gender and fertility variation have an impact on mating dynamics in a population because they affect the gene exchange among parental members and the genetic composition of the resultant seed crops. Fertility is the proportional gametic contribution of parents to their progeny. An effective number of parents, derivative of effective population size, is the probability that two alleles randomly chosen from the gamete gene pool originated from the same parent. The effective num

Pedigree reconstruction and spatial analysis for genetic testing and selection in a Larix kaempferi (Lamb.) Carrière plantation
Kyung‐Mi Lee, In-Sik Kim, Kyu‐Suk Kang
SJR Q1BMC Plant BiologyOA

BACKGROUND: Larix kaempferi is one of the major timber species in Northeast Asia. Demand for the reforestation of the species is rising in South Korea due to an increase in large timber production and utilization. However, progeny trials for the species have not been explored, making it challenging to foster advanced generations of tree improvement. In the present study, genetic testing and selection for diameter growth were conducted using pedigree reconstruction and phenotypic spatial distribu

Fertility Variation and Genetic Diversity in a Clonal Seed Orchard of Cryptomeria japonica

SJR Q3Silvae genetica/Silvae GeneticaOA

Abstract Clonal differences in fertility (expressed as the number of female and male strobili) were determined for three consecutive years (2002-2004) in a clonal seed orchard of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) in Korea. Fertility varied among clones and among years producing three-year averages of 196 and 652 for female and male strobili per ramet, respectively. Correlation between female and male strobilus production was positive over the three years and statistically significant in 2003, a
