15The indication of liver transplantation (LT) for the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is expanding. However, portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT) has been still accepted as an absolute contraindication. We experienced an unexpectedly good prognosis in selected patients. Therefore, we tried to identify the prognostic factors after LT for HCC with major PVTT. Among 282 patients who underwent living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) for HCC from January 2009 to December 2013, 11 (
BACKGROUND: Although transarterial chemoembolization is recommended as the standard treatment for Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage B hepatocellular carcinoma (BCLC-B HCC), other treatments including liver resection have been used. This study aimed to determine the survival benefit of treatment strategies including resection for BCLC-B HCC compared with non-surgical treatments. METHODS: The nationwide multicentre database of the Korean Liver Cancer Association was reviewed. Patients with BCLC-
BACKGROUND: The pure laparoscopic approach to donor hepatectomy is being taken more often. However, few centers perform pure laparoscopic donor right hepatectomy (PLDRH) because it requires a high level of surgical skill. Studies reporting initial outcomes of PLDRH may prompt further implementation of the technique and help reduce initial learning curves at other transplant centers. This study reports performance of PLDRH at a single center with extensive experience of adult living donor liver t

Split-liver transplantation (SLT) should be cautiously considered because the right trisection (RTS) graft can be a marginal graft in adult recipients. Herein, we analyzed the outcomes of RTS-SLT in Korea, where >75% of adult liver transplantations are performed with living donor liver transplantation. Among 2462 patients who underwent deceased donor liver transplantations (DDLTs) from 2005 to 2014, we retrospectively reviewed 86 (3.5%) adult patients who received a RTS graft (RTS-SLT group). Th
Conventional biochemical markers have limited usefulness in the prediction of early liver dysfunction. We, therefore, tried to find more useful liver failure biomarkers after liver resection that are highly sensitive to internal and external challenges in the biological system with a focus on liver metabolites. Twenty pigs were divided into the following 3 groups: sham operation group (n = 6), 70% hepatectomy group (n = 7) as a safety margin of resection model, and 90% hepatectomy group (n = 7)
INTRODUCTION: Liver tumor resection requires precise localization of tumors and blood vessels. Despite advancements in 3-dimensional (3D) visualization for laparoscopic surgeries, challenges persist. We developed and evaluated an augmented reality (AR) system that overlays preoperative 3D models onto laparoscopic images, offering crucial support for 3D visualization during laparoscopic liver surgeries. METHODS: Anatomic liver structures from preoperative computed tomography scans were segmented
Management of chalazion, characterized by noninfectious chronic granulomatous inflammation of the meibomian glands (MGs), remains challenging in ophthalmic practice, particularly because of its propensity for recurrence even after surgical intervention. This study aimed to evaluate the combined efficacy of doxycycline and intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy for treating intractable recurrent chalazion, focusing on reducing recurrence rates and improving MG status. This retrospective study include
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although the main action of human hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) is to neutralize hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) in serum, HBIG is known to be localized in the cell. However, the effect of intracellularly located HBIG is poorly understood because of the low purity of conventional plasma-derived HBIG (cHBIG). We attempted to elucidate the mechanism of action of internalized HBIG using recombinant HBIG (lenvervimab). METHODS: We used HBsAg producing cell lines, n
Purpose: To investigate the clinical efficacy of rebamipide eyedrops in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) associated with Sjögren’s syndrome. Methods: The study included 50 patients with Sjögren’s syndrome accompanied by MGD treated with 0.05% (w/v) cyclosporine and 0.15% (w/v) sodium hyaluronate eyedrops. They were divided into two groups: 25 who added rebamipide eyedrops to their existing treatments and a control group of 25 whose treatments did not change. We evaluated the tear b
