15INTRODUCTION: A recent study showed that early renal tubular injury is ameliorated in Nod-like receptor pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) KO mice with rhabdomyolysis-induced acute kidney injury (RIAKI). However, the precise mechanism has not been determined. Therefore, we investigated the role of NLRP3 in renal tubular cells in RIAKI. METHODS: Glycerol-mediated RIAKI was induced in NLRP3 KO and wild-type (WT) mice. The mice were euthanized 24 h after glycerol injection, and both kidneys
Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) is a promising new target for the prevention of cardiovascular (CV) events. However, the clinical significance of circulating PCSK9 is unclear in hemodialysis (HD) patients. A total of 353 HD patients were prospectively enrolled from June 2016 to August 2019 in a K-cohort. Plasma PCSK9 level was measured at the time of study enrollment. The primary endpoint was defined as a composite of CV event and death. Plasma PCSK9 level was positively co
Genetic polymorphisms may be linked to inter-individual differences in erythropoietin (EPO) resistance. We investigated the -511C/T polymorphism of the IL-1B gene and the I/D polymorphism of the ACE gene for any association with EPO resistance index (ERI) in maintenance hemodialysis patients (n=167). Because EPO responsiveness is multi-factorial, we also included other possible influences (age, sex, time on dialysis, ACE inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker use, ferritin, transferrin satura
BACKGROUND: As in younger recipients, post-transplant infection is a frequent and devastating complication after kidney transplantation (KT) in older recipients. However, few studies have analyzed characteristics of post-transplant infection in older kidney recipients. In this study of a nation-wide cohort of older kidney recipients, we investigated the current epidemiology, risk factors, and clinical impacts of early post-transplant infection, which was defined as infectious complications requi
New biomarkers of IgA nephropathy (IgAN) are needed for non-invasive diagnosis and appropriate treatment. There is emerging evidence that galactose deficient IgA1 (Gd-IgA1) is a pivotal molecule in the pathogenesis of IgAN. However, few studies have investigated the role of Gd-IgA1 as a biomarker in IgAN. In this study, we investigated the clinical relevance of serum Gd-IgA1 levels in patients with IgAN. Two hundred and thirty biopsy-proven IgAN patients, 74 disease controls (patients with non-I
Background . Previous studies have shown the antiapoptotic and anti-inflammatory potential of DPP-IV inhibitor in experimental models of renal injury. We tested whether DPP-IV inhibitor (gemigliptin) ameliorates renal injury by suppressing apoptosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress in mice with adriamycin nephropathy. Methods . Mice were treated with normal saline (control), gemigliptin (GM), adriamycin (ADR), or adriamycin combined with gemigliptin (ADR+GM). Apoptosis, inflammation, and oxid
In patients with AMI, TG/HDL-C ratio is a useful independent predictor of 12-month MACEs. However, this ratio does not have predictive power in patients with moderate renal dysfunction.
BACKGROUND: Blockade of the renin-angiotensin system plays a key role in suppressing the progression of renal diseases. It has not been well established whether this therapy provides additional effects when combined with vitamin D or its analog in a model of adriamycin (ADR)-induced nephropathy. METHODS: We evaluated the effect of an angiotensin II subtype 1 receptor blocker (telmisartan) combined with a vitamin D analog (oxacalcitriol) on mice ADR-induced nephropathy (9.5 mg/kg single intraveno
Genetic factors are considered to be important in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Despite several genome-wide association studies (GWASs) demonstrating that specific polymorphisms of candidate genes were associated with DN, there were some limitations in previous studies. We conducted a GWAS using customized DNA chips to identify novel susceptibility loci for DN in Korean. We analyzed a total of 414 DN cases and 474 normoalbuminuric diabetic hyper-controls across two stages using
Endocan, a potential biomarker of endothelial dysfunction, is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. We investigated the utility of plasma endocan for predicting cardiovascular risk in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergoing hemodialysis. Of the 452 patients in the K-cohort, 354 with available plasma endocan levels were enrolled. The correlation between plasma endocan levels and the clinical characteristics of a study population were analyzed. We divided patients into two grou
BACKGROUND: Cognitive decline is common in older adults. Similarly, the prevalence of renal dysfunction is also increased in the elderly population. We conducted this study to clarify the relationship between renal dysfunction and decline of cognitive function in community-dwelling elderly population. METHODS: ) was calculated using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation. Global cognitive function was assessed with the Mini-mental State Examination-Korean version. Other d
Abstract This study aims to figure out the worldwide prevalence of anticancer therapy-associated acute kidney injury (AKI) and tubulointerstitial nephritis (TIN) and the relative risk of each cancer drug. We conducted an analysis of VigiBase, the World Health Organization pharmacovigilance database, 1967–2023 via disproportionate Bayesian reporting method. We further categorized the anticancer drugs into four groups: cytotoxic therapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy. Report
BACKGROUND: IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common type of primary glomerulonephritis, although the definitive markers are unknown. We aimed to investigate the clinical significance of urinary cytokines in patients with IgAN. METHODS: From 2009 to 2018, the patients were divided into three groups: IgAN (n = 191), disease control (n = 53), and normal control (n = 76). We used a multiplex enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to measure 16 selected urinary inflammatory cytokines, evaluated the corr
