OBJECT: Pituitary adenomas are fairly common intracranial neoplasms, and nonfunctioning ones constitute a large subgroup of these adenomas. Complete resection is often difficult and may pose undue risk to neurological and endocrine function. Stereotactic radiosurgery has come to play an important role in the management of patients with nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas. This study examines the outcomes after radiosurgery in a large, multicenter patient population. METHODS: Under the auspices of

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Neurosurgical SocietyOA

OBJECTIVE: The prefabrication of customized cranioplastic implants has been introduced to overcome the difficulties of intra-operative implant molding. The authors present a new technique, which consists of the prefabrication of implant molds using three-dimensional (3D) printers and polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA) casting. METHODS: A total of 16 patients with large skull defects (>100 cm(2)) underwent cranioplasty between November 2009 and April 2011. For unilateral cranial defects, 3D images of

OBJECT: The object of this study was to define the long-term outcomes and risks of arteriovenous malformation (AVM) management using 2 or more stages of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for symptomatic large-volume lesions unsuitable for surgery. METHODS: In 1992, the authors prospectively began to stage the treatment of anatomical components to deliver higher single doses to AVMs with a volume of more than 10 cm(3). Forty-seven patients with such AVMs underwent volume-staged SRS. In this series,

SJR Q1Journal of neurosurgery

OBJECT: In this paper the authors' goal was to define the long-term benefits and risks of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for patients with arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) who underwent prior embolization. METHODS: Between 1987 and 2006, the authors performed Gamma Knife surgery in 996 patients with brain AVMs; 120 patients underwent embolization followed by SRS. In this series, 64 patients (53%) had at least one prior hemorrhage. The median number of embolizations varied from 1 to 5. The med

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to define the risk of rebleeding after stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for hemorrhagic arteriovenous malformations with or without associated intracranial aneurysms. METHODS: Between 1987 and 2006, we performed Gamma Knife SRS on 996 patients with brain arteriovenous malformations; 407 patients had sustained an arteriovenous malformation hemorrhage. Sixty-four patients (16%) underwent prior embolization and 84 (21%) underwent prior surgical r

SJR Q1Journal of neurosurgeryOA

OBJECTIVE: The authors of this study evaluate the long-term outcomes of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for cavernous sinus meningioma (CSM). METHODS: The authors retrospectively assessed treatment outcomes 5-18 years after SRS in 200 patients with CSM. The median patient age was 57 years (range 22-83 years). In total, 120 (60%) patients underwent Gamma Knife SRS as primary management, 46 (23%) for residual tumors, and 34 (17%) for recurrent tumors after one or more surgical procedures. The medi

SJR Q1Journal of neurosurgery

OBJECT: The authors report their experience of using Gamma Knife surgery (GKS) in patients with subependymal giant cell astrocytoma (SEGA). METHODS: Over a 20-year period, the authors identified 6 patients with SEGAs who were eligible for GKS. The median patient age was 16.5 years (range 7-55 years). In 4 patients, GKS was used as a primary management therapy. One patient underwent radiosurgery for recurrent tumors after prior resection, and in 1 patient GKS was used as an adjunct after subtotal

Kyung-Jae Park, Shin-Hyuk Kang, Yang‐Seok Chae, Mi-Ok Yu, Tai-Hyoung Cho, Jung-Keun Suh, Hoon-Kap Lee, Yong-Gu Chung
SJR Q1Journal of neurosurgery

OBJECT: Peritumoral brain edema (PTBE) is associated with perioperative neurological deficits in patients with meningiomas. However, the pathogenesis of meningioma-associated edema remains unclear. In the present study, the authors investigated the expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and its relationship with PTBE in resected meningiomas. METHODS: Thirty-six benign meningiomas obtained in 36 patients were studied retrospectively. Edema volume was assessed on MR images, and an edema index (EI) was

Brain Stem Hemorrhage Following Burr Hole Drainage for Chronic Subdural Hematoma -Case Report-
Kyung-Jae Park, Shin-Hyuk Kang, Hoon-Kap Lee, Yong-Gu Chung
SJR Q1Neurologia medico-chirurgicaOA

A 76-year-old man presented with brain stem hemorrhage after burr-hole drainage for bilateral chronic subdural hematomas. Neuroimaging demonstrated resolution of the transtentorial herniation but also detected new brain stem hemorrhage, manifesting as gait disturbance. He recovered after conservative treatment. Asymmetrical and rapid decompression, which leads to vascular disruption and/or sudden increase in cerebral blood flow, was probably responsible for the secondary brain stem hemorrhage. T
