SJR Q1Stroke

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Collaterals sustain the penumbra before recanalization and offset infarct growth, yet the influence of baseline collateral flow on recanalization after endovascular therapy remains relatively unexplored. METHODS: We analyzed consecutive patients who received endovascular therapy for acute cerebral ischemia from 2 distinct study populations. We assessed the relationship between pretreatment collateral grade and vascular recanalization (Thrombolysis In Myocardial Ischemia [

Contemporary carotid imaging: from degree of stenosis to plaque vulnerability
Waleed Brinjikji, John Huston, Alejandro A. Rabinstein, Gyeong‐Moon Kim, Amir Lerman, Giuseppe Lanzino
SJR Q1Journal of neurosurgery

Carotid artery stenosis is a well-established risk factor of ischemic stroke, contributing to up to 10%-20% of strokes or transient ischemic attacks. Many clinical trials over the last 20 years have used measurements of carotid artery stenosis as a means to risk stratify patients. However, with improvements in vascular imaging techniques such as CT angiography and MR angiography, ultrasonography, and PET/CT, it is now possible to risk stratify patients, not just on the degree of carotid artery s

SJR Q3Neuroreport

The time-dependent effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on working memory was investigated by applying anodal stimulation over the left prefrontal cortex. This single-blind, sham-controlled crossover study recruited 15 healthy participants. A three-back verbal working-memory task was performed before, during, and 30 min after 1 mA anodal or sham tDCS. Anodal tDCS, compared with sham stimulation, significantly improved working-memory performance. Accuracy of response was signi

Collateral Flow Averts Hemorrhagic Transformation After Endovascular Therapy for Acute Ischemic Stroke
Oh Young Bang, Jeffrey L. Saver, Suk Jae Kim, Gyeong‐Moon Kim, Chin‐Sang Chung, Bruce Ovbiagele, Kwang Ho Lee, David S. Liebeskind, for the UCLA-Samsung Stroke Collaborators
SJR Q1StrokeOA

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Collaterals sustain the ischemic penumbra to limit growth of the infarct core before revascularization, yet the impact of baseline collateral flow on hemorrhagic transformation (HT) after endovascular therapy remains unknown. METHODS: A collaborative study from 2 stroke centers in distinct geographic regions included 222 consecutive patients who received endovascular therapy for acute cerebral ischemia. The influence of collaterals on HT was analyzed in distinct case scen

SJR Q1StrokeOA

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: To assess the precise mechanisms of stroke in cancer patients, we analyzed the data for cancer patients with acute ischemic stroke registered from 6 centers in South Korea. Clinical features, risk factors, diffusion-weighted imaging lesion patterns, and laboratory findings including D-dimer levels were compared between patients with conventional stroke mechanisms (CSMs) and cryptogenic group. RESULTS: A total of 161 patients were included in this study: 97 (60.2%) patient

Extensive Leukoaraiosis Is Associated With High Early Risk of Recurrence After Ischemic Stroke
Gyeong‐Moon Kim, Kwang‐Yeol Park, Ross Avery, Johanna Helenius, Natalia S. Rost, Jonathan Rosand, Bruce R. Rosen, Hakan Ay
SJR Q1StrokeOA

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The integrity of white matter tracts connecting different parts of the brain is important for rapid compensation for the lost function from ischemic stroke. Impaired white matter reserve capacity secondary to leukoaraiosis may facilitate detection of new symptomatic ischemic events that would otherwise remain inconspicuous after an initial ischemic stroke. We sought to identify whether the extent of leukoaraiosis was a predictor of risk of early stroke recurrence. METHODS

Background and aims: The pathophysiology of hippocampal enlarged perivascular spaces (H-EPVS) and its relationship to cognitive impairment is largely unknown. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between H-EPVS and cognition in non-dementic elderly population. Methods: A total of 109 subjects were prospectively enrolled. The eligibilities for inclusion were age from 55 to 85 years and Mini-Mental Status Examination score of ≥26. The Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-

Background: Risk stratification of asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis (ACAS) is still an issue for carotid revascularization. We sought to identify factors associated with symptomatic carotid artery stenosis (SCAS) using multimodal imaging techniques. Methods: We retrospectively collected data on patients who underwent carotid artery revascularization. Results from duplex sonography, computerized tomography angiography, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance a

SJR Q2Frontiers in NeurologyOA

Background and Purpose Collateral flow in acute ischemic stroke is known as a predictor of treatment outcome and long-term prognosis. However, factors determining the initial collateral flow remain unclear. We investigated factors related to collateral flow in patients with acute ischemic stroke caused by large vessel occlusion (AIS-LVO) and further analyzed the results according to stroke etiology. Methods This was a retrospective study using prospective stroke registry data from a single unive
